NEW YORK 2016 CRUISES planning & info thread. NYC

Hey, MJ, do you still have that great post you put up in 2012 Werth the driving directions? I bet newbies would appreciate it.

I know my photo hosting site back then (webshots) deleted all of my photos but I may still have them on my hard drive. I will check it out.

thanks MJ. I know we're going to be very early. Way before 9:50am. It's just our nature. That rooftop doesn't seem all that big for parking but I'm confident we'll get a spot. The more I read and learn about this, I'm pretty sure we'll wind up having to take our bags down ourselves after we park on that roof.

but it's about 10 months away so plenty of time to figure things out.

quick question: I saw a big "pier 88" in one of your pics. The magic docks at pier 90 from what I've read, but is that the only entry point to park?

There is only one entry to the terminal and the piers are all along the same mid level roadway. Pier 90 is first then Pier 88 at the end closest to the Intrepid Air/Sea Museum. Yes, only one entrance in so you would pass Pier 90 and drive a few feet to Pier 88. the ship could be at either one on any given day.

bumping this up as we are getting closer to the NYC sailings. if anyone has any experience with hotels and parking near the port, or great places to get a quick bite on a day trip, please share.

The Hilton garden inn Times Square is on 8th between 47&48 (maybe 48&49). It's a pretty easy walk to the pier from there (about 4 E/W blocks). I've stayed there a couple of times and walked to the Intrepid from their (also several times) which is close to the cruise ship piers.

So glad this post was bumped. Can't wait to read reviews of the 8 night that includes PC with WDW. I'm booked for that cruise for 2017 with my two girls. I'm planning to take Amtrak but very nervous about safety and security in the city. Are there hotels near Penn Station or the port that are safe and clean for $250 or less a night? Would I be insane to risk coming in the day of?

I can add a DCL transfer from the cruise terminal to JFK is $45 per adult. We're disembarking from the WBTA and looking for transportation options.

I suppose it depends are how far you are coming from regarding traveling that day. Remember hurricane season is coming to a close so you will need to the watch weather if you plan on traveling that day. If I'm not mistaken you can get on the ship by 10am but must be on the ship by 3 (I think). If you get a room not far from Penn you can grab a cab outside the hotel for less then $10 (last time I priced it out from Penn). Safety and security is not hard. Be vigilant, don't stay out too late and always in populated areas, if you are worried.

Is anyone else booked on the Oct. 15 trip? I can't get myself to pay the last $1800 of the $5000, lol. Tomorrow's payday so I guess it will be time. We are looking forward to our first Disney cruise. We live on LI so it will be an easy trip to the port. LIRR to Penn and cabbing from there.

Parking rates are crazy! $40/night at the pier and forget parking garages. They all look great until you put in the date of the cruise. It looks like the days that the ship sails, parking garages inflate their prices. $15/day no cruise, double it if the ship sails that day. UGH

From 2012 in Times Square when DCL sailed from NYC.

Can anyone here tell me more about cruises from New York to PC

Am a bit put off if the sea is normally quite rough

Anyone on here done this cruise and what month

Have done the 8 day from NYC to Bahamas with a stop at PC in the month of May. Was very foggy when we left NYC but I don't recall the waters being any rougher than we sail from PC to the Caribbean. We have sailed from NY a few times on a few different lines and I never really noticed too much of a difference.

The North Atlantic waters tend to be a little rougher, MJ, just not that much to really make a difference.

While I'm here, I can't believe I'm asking this as the native New Yorker, but has anybody found any decent parking alternatives than parking at the port for $40 a day?

Hi! Im doing the 5 night Canadian cruise out of NYC in 3 weeks!!

I should know this, but I think I'm overthinking - is there a pirate night on this cruise? I know that when I sign in to my activities it tells me there is (on the Halifax day) but then it doesn't mention Halloween anywhere, so I'm wondering if Pirate night is really Halloween and then if not, when is Halloween? I'm trying to start thinking about packing and am not quite sure what I need!

Any other night would just be "cruise casual," is that correct? I don't need any other dress up (I know really, I don't NEED any dress up, but I'm not one to pass up an opportunity to look silly!).

Thanks!

There is supposedly a dress up (not formal or semi-formal) night, probably on Monday (the first sea day). Haven't heard when Halloween will be. Maybe the second sea day?
