Nasty Menu Changes Teppan Edo & Tokyo Dining

Just checked and there have been huge recent changes to Epcot's Teppan Edo and also Tokyo Dining menus.

While food is definitely in the eye of the beholder, the changes seem to me to be a real cheapening of the entrees (eg scallops are additional $ add-ons and no longer entrees).

Can't be a coincidence that this has been done before the Fall Free Dining starts to roll.

Very disappointing as these menus had been constants for a number of years. While WDW can always change up the menus at will (and frequently does), this is not a change for the better.

I'm dropping my Tokyo Dining ressie as a result.

Guessing there will be a number of very unhappy regulars who will show up and have a most unpleasant surprise.

Just saw the menus, and I'm sad to say they are disappointing to me too...probably won't be rushing back...

I love scallops--I mean, love them. I prefer them over lobster.

I've noticed that scallops have been going up in price significantly in the last year or so. A couple of my favorite seafood restaurants here locally have really increased prices on scallop entrees, and scallops have disappeared from many WDW menus or become an add-on.

For example, what used to be my favorite entrée at Kona Café (shrimp and scallops with rice and veggies) had 6 scallops--woo hoo! Later they reduced it to 3. Now there's no scallop entree on the Kona menu and it's been that way for several months, at least. :sad1:

I know there have been other menu changes, like at Narcoossees, where they've removed a lot of guest favorites.

As much as I'd like to blame it on free dining, or even the DDP generally, I look at all the other ways WDW is cheaping out or upselling and I think it would be going on even if the DDP didn't exist. IMHO it's just the way they're doing business.

The Tokyo Dining menu has gotten progressively worse throughout the years. They used to have an extensive sushi menu and now they only offer about four choices. It is the worst Japanese menu I've ever seen, quite frankly. It's a shame, because the atmosphere and service at Tokyo Dining are great! It's Kimono's for us over the last few years. We skip the DDP and go get quality sushi!

I am so disappointed in the Tokyo Dining changes. I was going back and forth between that and Teppan Edo and had decided on Tokyo Dining because their menu sounded better. There was a tuna dish that sounded right up my ally. I'm so glad I looked at the menu and saw they now have like 5 entree choices, none of which appeal to me. I didn't really notice a change in Teppan Edo (though I admit I don't care for scallops so I wouldn't have noticed that). I've cancelled my Tokyo dining ADR and will just stick with Teppan Edo instead. Or maybe end up with neither.

No more Tempura? At Tokyo Dining? Might have to cancel then. Disappointed.

What makes these changes "nasty"?
Recently I've realized that some people say something is "no longer on the menu" or "nasty" or whatever, when they really mean that the combination is no longer available as a single credit on the dining plan.

I've just looked at the menu on the Disney website and scallops are still there, as is tempura.

I really wish they would just do away with the DDP anyhow. But I agree, there seem to be a lot of people that equate "not one credit" with "no longer available".

What makes these changes "nasty"?
I said nasty because for the past 10 yrs at Tokyo Dining a number of entrees included quality shellfish (large shrimp and scallops) or chicken or a combo of both plus vegetables plus rice sides. Granted, these were never huge entrees but they still were proper entrees.

The new menu reflects both a WDW cost effective trend to small plates/tapas style offerings and drops the more $ scallops as an entree choice. While noshing on small plates may be a popular trend, its an incredibly $ way for families to do dinner at WDW. It may also be a shortsighted move by WDW. Witness what has happened with Spice Road Table. Expensive small plates are a hard draw. The new menu will also be a shock for guests on the DP.

At the moment, there is a gap betw the Disney Dining menu and allears but allears will pick this up shortly. I found some recent pics of the new menu on trip advisor including pics of a lobster tempura. Appears to be a petite serving for a $30 entree. A cheese fondue dipping bowl looks to be the side. While the review is glowing, its clear that the reviewer also ordered more than one plate for the meal.

Nasty is subjective. But so is food. If anything positive comes from this thread, it's that it serves as a heads up for regulars to check out the updated menus before arriving for their ADR.

I have never eaten at either, but I don't see what the big deal is. Menus change all the time, at restaurants all over the place, not just Disney World. They also respond to trends in how people are eating. As far as cost goes, I guess when I am on vacation I just plan on not worrying about it. When I go with my 3 kids for a week I usually plan on spending about $1500-$2000 on food and drink. My wife and I are going kid free in about a month and we are budgeting about $1000.

They got rid of the steak entree!
The chicken entree is about the same price as the steak one that they eliminated.

By eliminating the steak entree,
they can offer far cheaper meats--like chicken-- @ steak prices!
A brilliant maximize-the-profits Bean Counter move.

Hey, shio ramen! My DS9 is going to be super happy. I expect he'll go through the ramen and a sushi combo in one sitting.

Does look like they nixed many of the "meat and tater" style entrees...steak, tuna steak, grilled chicken, grilled salmon, etc. The new menu seems much more streamlined and maybe a little more "21st Century" Japanese-American. The new additions...ramen, udon, etc. are all very "hip" and fast growing trends in the U.S., at least in urban areas.

I'm good with it.
