Names that only old

I think it's interesting how some names are definitely coming back -- I know little ones named Florence, Walter, Matilda, Henry, Mabel, Leo . . .

But no little ones named Mildred, Gladys, Floyd . . . .

Haven't heard anyone under the age of 45ish with these names:

Sharon
Shirley
Donna
Debbie/Debra/Deborah
Harry
Darlene
May/Mae
Blanche
Esther
Art
Hugo
Nancy
Maureen
Lydia

My 1 1/2 year old nephew is Arthur, named after our Grandpa. Grandpa is 94 and has a bunch of grandchildren and great grandchildren (Arthur's mom is 2nd youngest grandchild). When he found out my sister had named her son after him, he was so happy! No one in the family ever considered it! He can't help but to have a special relationship with lil' Arthur!

Grandpa's Arthur and William

Grandma's Betty and Ramona

My son is Alexander (we call him AJ) which was my Great Grandpa's name

people have ?

Gretchen

I know 3 Gretchens, all under age 30. Never met and older woman with that name.

What gets me now is the strange spellings of common names.

Is it Erica, Eriika Erika, or my favorite, Airika. I know women all under age 25 with that name and spelling.

Is it Melissa or Mellisa?

I know a dog named Gretchen. I thought that was unique.

My name is Gretchen...and I've known of several people who have dogs named Gretchen, including my godparents, who named their Irish Setter Gretchen, which made no sense to me- I understand a German Shepherd, but Irish Setter?:confused3:confused3

Anyway, I am old-ish (over 45, under 50). I think in a few all the 'J' names for girls will be considered out of fashion for newborns- Jennifer, Jessica, etc...that were so popular in the 80's.

Linda
Diane
Dianna
Sharon
Sandra
Connie
Susan

These were very popular in the 50s.

A couple people just mentioned Sharon which is my niece's (age 1) name. She was named after her paternal grandmother who would be in her 50's if she were alive. When I first heard the name, all I could think of was the former Mouseketeer... LOL. She doesn't go by Sharon though - she's Shari.

The nice part about a name like this - everyone knows it, the poor kid won't have to spell or correct pronunciation for everyone they meet, BUT you are unlikely to run into anyone else who has it.
That was me when I was growing up (Emily). Of course, the name exploded and is no longer unique like it was when I was a kid.

My name - Barbara - went out of style years ago.

My ex husband's family had a plethora of old and odd names. They were Olive, Lola, Esther, Inez and Dorcas.

My friend just named her daughter Olive. She was watching a movie and a little girl had the name and she loved it.

Haven't heard anyone under the age of 45ish with these names:

Sharon
Shirley
Donna
Debbie/Debra/Deborah
Harry
Darlene
May/Mae
Blanche
Esther
Art
Hugo
Nancy
Maureen
Lydia

a girl on my cheer squad has a oneyear old sister named May and her middle name is Esther. lol

I have always felt like I have an Old Lady name "Lois" I never hear anyone naming their baby that ;)

Old-fashioned names are very much in vogue right now. All of my daughter's friends have either an "old-fashioned" name or something trendy like all the Caden, Jaden, Hayden, Brayden, etc. names. Names that are very popular today like Ella, Sophia, Isabella, Ava, Olivia, etc. were all considered old-fashioned names when I was growing up.

My youngest is 4. Here is a list of some of her friends with "old-fashioned" names from preschool, church, play group, etc. with their ages beside their names:

Frances (3) sometimes called Franny
Sylvia (4), called Sylvie
Josephine (4), called Josie
Lillian (4), called Lily
Amelia (4)
Ruby (2)

Boys:
Charles (3), called Charlie
Miles (5)
George (2)

Personally, I love the names Josephine with Josie as a nickname, Audrey, and Miles and one of my favorite names is Amelia with a nickname of Mia. My 4 year old daughter has an old-fashioned name too (not any of the above) but her name is in the top 100 baby names on the Social Security list for last year so I think it's pretty common.

Names that I think are still outdated are names like Barbara, Shirley, Gladys, Peggy, Linda. These are names that were popular in the 30's -50's and just haven't had time to make a comeback yet in my opinion. Maybe we will have grandchildren or great-grandchildren with these names!

Ugh, I HATE this trend. Sadie is another old name I've seen on young girls.

I worked at a senior living home and they had the same names as the kids in daycare. I guess their parents aren't old enough to know when these names were out the last time around.

Bernice
Bertha
Irene
Inez
Maude
Louise
Mildred
Margaret
Ethelene
Ernestine

Some of these sound worse than others but none IMO sound good.

Interesting story, My Grandmother's best friend was named Eunice. I had a 2nd cousin who was friends with a writer on The Carol Burnette Show, my cousin was telling the friend all about my Grandmother's friend Eunice and that is how her character came to be on the show.
