Names that only old

My granddaughter is Helena, after my mother and great-grandmother (German/French). She lives in the South and we do not know another person around her age with that name.

Also, although we are not from the South but the Northeast, we are heavily into naming people for older family members.

I was going to say the same thing. This is not exclusive to the south.

I'm 63 and my middle name is Grace after my late Great Aunt. Growing up I was embarrassed by my "old lady" middle name. :laughing: Now there is a Grace everywhere you look. I even have a Granddaughter with Grace as a middle name.:thumbsup2
I know a whole slew of under-10 Graces, as well as one about 50, who also felt her name was old fashioned.

Some not mentioned yet;

Geraldine (my grandmother)
Arlene (my mother)

Clark
Marshall
I know an 8yo Clark. :)

my mom said when she named me (emily) that hardly anyone was using it. now, i hear it all. the. time.

DD has an old-fashioned name (adeline). i adore it. i never heard it used when she was born, but now i've met a few girls (younger than her) with it.
I still remember when Emily was a grandma name, and meeting my first young Emily. She was the niece of a friend, an adorable little toddler. One look at her and all of a sudden the name seemed young again. She would be about 35 now, and since then, yes the name has become hugely popular. I love your dd's name, too. Would have loved to use Adeleine or Adele for a dd but it doesn't sound good with our last name.

Other "grandma/pa" names that are very common among kids in my area are Sophia, Isabella, Emma, Hannah, Kate, Chloe, Ava, Samantha, Olivia, Abigail and Noah.

Less popular, but those I know at least one child with the name are Lydia, Esther, Violet, Ada, Ivy, Meredith, Miranda, Rose, Pearl, Claire, Stella, Audrey, Audra, Owen, Samuel, Edward, Zeke, Charles, George, Elijah and Joseph.

Names that are common in my age group but sound old fashioned to my teen and her friends are Kathy, Jennifer, Linda, Patty, Kelly, Stacy, Debby and Tammy.

Names I haven't heard on anyone under about 70 are Edna, Henrietta, Agatha, Agnes, Muriel, Kay, Dick, Harold, Lester and Fred.

One of DD's best friends is Edna (she's 19). DD is dating a Harry (20 yo). DH's middle name is Harold (45 yo). Fred seems pretty common in the under 5 set around here (I know two toddlers).

Some of our family names include
<SNIP>
Arlie
<SNIP>

I used to babysit a little guy named Arlie. It was short for Arlington and he was a "the 4th" - they just kept passing the name down over and over again.

Some old sounding names from my family and my husband's family:

Beatrice (this was my beloved grandma's name, and I wanted to use it as a middle name for my youngest DD, but I never could find a first name that I liked that sounded good with it)
Blanche
Dot
Doris
Anita
Gertrude
Nancy
Shirley
Darlene
Stella

Nestor
Dick (He was a "Richard", and now-a-days would be called Rick instead)
Hal
Larry
Elmer
Harold
Floyd
Ronald

My grandpa's name is Paul, and I don't think it sounds old at all... I know several young boys named Paul. It's also my brother's and my nephew's middle name.

My grandparents were/are Clyde & Beulah(95), Maurice & Leah. The only one I would use now would be Leah.

Some of their sibling's names were/are Earl, Doris, Arlene, Evelyn, Lois, Vada

Agnes. This is my grandma's name and she's 90. I don't know of any young people with this name.
