They were both born in the late 1800's

I have a 3-year old in my preschool class named Florence. It's not a name I've heard in the younger generation. My neighbors have a nephew named Stanley. Also not a name I've heard for little guys like him.

My DD 17 has a friend in her class named Florence and my cousin is named Stanley but he has to be in his 50 's

Hazel and Ida. My grandmothers.

I happen to LOVE the name Hazel and I was thrilled when an acquaintance named her daughter Hazel.

Three female names that come to mind are:
Viola - My mother's middle name
Margaret or Marguerite - My aunt's name
Doris - My aunt's name
Louise - My husband's grandmother's middle name

Three male names:
Morris - My father-in-law's name
Frank - Uncle's name

Girl names Pearl and Ruby
Boy names Clarence and Myron.

DS's middle name is Myron and people said, "Oh it must a family name" with that trace of pity and disgust in their voices. I happen to like the name :)

Wanda
Audrey
Herbert
Walter

Haven't really heard these names in the younger generation

How about Dick for a guy? Nowdays if a guy is Richard he is Richard or Rick.

Some of the names are just so awful for old people. I have an Aunt Bertha, I always felt so sorry for her having to have that name. Although will the Mildreds and Berthas of today be the Ashleys and Emilys of tomorrow? :rotfl: Will the names we think sound pretty today be ugly in 50 years?

I know several young people named Gretchen

Helen
Mable
Agatha
Mildred
Definitely. Helen was one that immediately came to mind.. maybe because it is my grandmother's name.

My ex husband's family had a plethora of old and odd names. They were Olive, Lola, Esther, Inez and Dorcas.
I love Olive and Lola. Dorcas though, is that pronounced like DORK-US?

Not too long ago Olivia, Sophia, Helen, Emma, Emily and some other now-popular names would have been listed here.

Some of our friends just named their daughter Alice Maxine.

Is Helen popular? I love the name Alice :)

Another good one!

Henry, Howard, Lamont, Ernest and Benny are some other old family names.

Someone beat me to my dad's Clarence.
Franklin
Herbert
Harold
Elmer
George
Earl

With the ladies
Alot of the ones mentioned, I don't associate with being old school (like old farm days where families helped on the farm--Wonderful LIfe days)

The above I associate with those days along with
Ethel
Bertha
Dorcus (still amazing to me that someone named their child that back then)
Winifred
Jeanette
Lois

Gladys is often associated with "old." But I'd like to see it make a comeback.

In another 30 years my name, "Lisa", is going to be the old name. There sure are going to be a lot of us. Watch out for an army of Lisa's at the retirement community!
