Yesterday after dh got home and was in the shower I looked out the window and saw water rushing into the street. I yelled for him to hurry and finish so he could help me move the vehicles and put the sand bags back up. There was no time, I had to climb through the passenger side of his truck to get out to the street, having to jump from the vehicle. My van is new so I went to move it first. I came back for the truck but had to wade through water to get to it. By the time I moved the vehicles there was no getting back without running my minivan up to the door to get our dogs. I almost did not make it back out to the road because it should have flooded it, I have no idea why it did not.
I yelled to my husband to get some clothes and stuff we will need. And to call for help to sandbag more. I had to go get ds 7 at daycamp. When I got back the entire street was waiste deep. Dh was waiting across the water from me where it was still shallow. He told me the bags were up town and there was no time to sandbag. He said he was staying there:scared1:
I yelled at him to come over before they had to boat him out. But he would not come. I went to the truck to get the bags. All there was was one long sleeve winter shirt and one winter outfit for ds's. No checkbook, atm card meds....nothing. So he had to wade waste deep to bring it over.
I drove to my moms in Iowa City and now I am stuck here as all the roads have flooded. There is nothing I can do from here and dh is not the most buisness minded person. Doug says that the water is now ankle deep, that the garage is detaching itself from the house, and it looks like the brick and mortar basement has rubble that has fallen through, it is nothing but mud.
He also said that the house shook and made a rumbling noise.
I told him to get out, but he has no where to go. The hotels are all full and he needs to stay around there to get things done. :(
Luckily the water only reached the top of the basement and the halfway to the top on the garage.
He is being stubborn and will not leave or stay at the temporary shelter. He says it looks like a huge river where cornfields once were. I am so confused, I don't know what to do. I have not slept. They are expecting more flooding, and I am sure this time it will reach the first floor. I half want them to condenm it....part of me thinks it would be easier to start over.
The water came so fast, there was no warning. Driving here was crazy, all the destruction. I can not wrap my head around it all. FEMA has been to my town but has not anounced a decsision yet, if they declare our town a disaster then it will be so much easier on us financialy.
Please pray for us.

Oh how horrible! :worried: I am so sorry! I hope your husband will be okay, and that things work out for you guys somehow.

oh my heart breaks for you!

I will be praying for all of you!

How awful....
I'll be praying for your family.:(

Keeping your family in my thoughts. Please stay safe and try to stay strong.

Praying for you, Douglisa. What a frightening situation. Hang in there. :grouphug:

Wow, that does sound fast!

It is so strange, the droughts down south and now all this flooding...

Oh, that's really bad! Glad that you're safe. Sounds like you need to stay put and your DH will be OK.

Hang in there.

I was thinking about that earlier. Down here we are dancing when we see rain. We are in a drought and truly need rain. But just North of us is drowning in too much.

Douglisa, you and your family are in my thoughts!! Stay safe!

We were listening to the radio on the way here and heard about the fires in California and listened to a bit of Arnolds speech. Ds 17 said that it is the apocylyps. (sorry the spell check is not working on moms putor)
My 96 yr old grandmother refused to leave her home. She says she wants to die in her home if the dam breaks. My uncle said that if they start closing the roads to her place tommorow like they are saying then he will drag grams out kicking and screaming if he has to. Grams has been wishing for death for a while though. She has lost her sight and can not taste or smell.
One man on the news said a very fitting word. Depressing.....it is.

Oh boy, your post is bringing back memories. :( You definitely have my sympathies.

When I first made it back to my house one month after Katrina and saw what 3.5 feet of standing water for two weeks did to it, I thought no way, no way in the world could it be fixed. I just couldn't imagine ever living there again. I denied that it was even my house at first. We had to wait for the damage assessment from the city to see if it could be repaired or if it had to come down. Well the city gave us a permit to repair the house and deemed it structurally sound, but I still couldn't see it. But indeed the house did get repaired and we moved back in one year later, and it is beautiful.

I know how daunting and overwhelming it feels, but you will get through it. It won't be easy and you will have some challenges ahead, but everything will be okay. I needed to hear that everyday through the rebuilding so I wouldn't go insane. And you will probably be in shock for awhile, especially driving through town, but that will wear off too and you will begin to feel a sense of normalcy again, I promise.

Stay safe and get your DH and grandmother out of there- nasty things happen in floodwater.

I am so sorry this is happening to you. I know how devastating this is. We went thru this with Floyd. It happens so quickly, your world is changed in an instant.

I will keep you in my prayers. Hang in there.

our town is having the same issues .... I had to laugh though (gotta keep the sense of humor right?) but I was down pumping out water at my grandmas thinking of the post the other day about the low cost of houses here... thinking hummmm maybe I see WHY (PS I don't think the situation is funny that just hit me the other day and I thought of that post)

I am so sorry, Lisa. You must be so worried.

May God watch over Doug and help him to make the best decisions.

How absolutely horrible. I'm glad you were able to get to your DS. Hopefully the authorities will convince your DH to leave the house.

I'm so sorry this is happening to you and all the other flood victims.
