Yesterday after dh got home and was in the shower I looked out the window and saw water rushing into the street. I yelled for him to hurry and finish so he could help me move the vehicles and put the sand bags back up. There was no time, I had to climb through the passenger side of his truck to get out to the street, having to jump from the vehicle. My van is new so I went to move it first. I came back for the truck but had to wade through water to get to it. By the time I moved the vehicles there was no getting back without running my minivan up to the door to get our dogs. I almost did not make it back out to the road because it should have flooded it, I have no idea why it did not.
I yelled to my husband to get some clothes and stuff we will need. And to call for help to sandbag more. I had to go get ds 7 at daycamp. When I got back the entire street was waiste deep. Dh was waiting across the water from me where it was still shallow. He told me the bags were up town and there was no time to sandbag. He said he was staying there
I yelled at him to come over before they had to boat him out. But he would not come. I went to the truck to get the bags. All there was was one long sleeve winter shirt and one winter outfit for ds's. No checkbook, atm card meds....nothing. So he had to wade waste deep to bring it over.
I drove to my moms in Iowa City and now I am stuck here as all the roads have flooded. There is nothing I can do from here and dh is not the most buisness minded person. Doug says that the water is now ankle deep, that the garage is detaching itself from the house, and it looks like the brick and mortar basement has rubble that has fallen through, it is nothing but mud.
He also said that the house shook and made a rumbling noise.
I told him to get out, but he has no where to go. The hotels are all full and he needs to stay around there to get things done.
Luckily the water only reached the top of the basement and the halfway to the top on the garage.
He is being stubborn and will not leave or stay at the temporary shelter. He says it looks like a huge river where cornfields once were. I am so confused, I don't know what to do. I have not slept. They are expecting more flooding, and I am sure this time it will reach the first floor. I half want them to condenm it....part of me thinks it would be easier to start over.
The water came so fast, there was no warning. Driving here was crazy, all the destruction. I can not wrap my head around it all. FEMA has been to my town but has not anounced a decsision yet, if they declare our town a disaster then it will be so much easier on us financialy.
Please pray for us.
