So I was dropping off a bag of clothes at Goodwill yesterday and I decided I didn't want to go home yet (Grampa was watching kids and I needed a little more 'mom' time!) so I decided to go into the store and look around. I casually looked through some t-shirts, not looking for anything in particular. I found myself in the 'grey' rack, but seriously, who needs used grey t-shirts? ;) I pushed aside some shirts and there it was...a Disney MONORAIL t-shirt, the one with the monorail announcement in spanish, good condition, in my size for .99 cents!! :goodvibes

ugh. Nothing grosses me out more than used clothing. Sure hope you boiled the shirt before wearing it.

:lmao: You do realize that clothes that are bought brand new may have *gasp* been tried on by someone else.

Of course she'll wash the shirt before wearing it, but boiling it is a bit OCD.

As much as I love saving money and bargain shopping, a bad experience from Plato's Closet ruined buying second hand clothing for us. DD had found the cutest sweater, we did a quick sniff test to check it out and it seemed fine...until she wore it. The underarm odor was really strong and everything i tried could not get rid of it. Now we just stick to clearance sales :(

Not too worried about cleaning it. It's in the wash right now with the HOT water towels and sheets!

There were some disney sweatshirts there too. They were 1.99, I passed on those.

Our Goodwill and Thift stores are much cleaner than Platos Closet. The one near us just smells bad, then the prices are high! But I'm sure a hot water wash will get out all the smellies!!! Unfortunately, DD's first encounter with "used clothes" was at Plato's Closet (at a friend's advice) and now she will not go near any used places. I have gotten some things at the Thift store with tags still attached and she is none the wiser.

U can get such great deals at goodwill, salvation army etc!! the outfits have already been washed once so shrinkage is not a big worry! and after washing them yourself they can be and are just as clean as if someone returned them to a store!!!
:woohoo:

Way to go! Congratulations!

Salvation Army is my favorite place. I've got lots of Disney sweatshirts from there. I told myself no more but i found one with the cutest Dalmatian puppy on it.

My best find was a Fort Wilderness hoodie. I didn't buy one when we were there a couple years ago because they were so much ($65.)

I've found tons of cute WDW tops at Goodwill mostly for the kids.

I wouldn't buy anything from Plato's Closet. We went in there the other day and the place reeked like stinky feet. There is no way I'd want clothing from a store like that.

My cute Disney/Goodwill story :goodvibes

Background - we took our first trip to Disney at the beginning of Oct. last year and my DD and I ate at Cinderella's Royal Table. This was quite a splurge for us and we made other sacrifices so it could happen and it was totally worth it! Amazing memories -makes me smile to just think about. Well - at the end of Oct. we had a halloween party at church and my daughter went as Cinderella of course, and brought the wand she was given at CRT. (they have the words Cinderella Royal Table printed on the wand) As were we cleaning up after the party, the kids were chasing each other and --- the wand got dropped and broke in half. :sad1:

A few months later, a 10 year old boy from another family at church (also Disney obsessed) came to church with another CRT wand! His family was at goodwill and saw it on sale for .50 cents and he remembered my DD crying so hard, and asked his parents if they could get it for her! What a guy! :cheer2: What wonderful pixie dust. I should mention that this family has a 5 yr old girl and I suggested that they keep it for her, but they said no - they knew it would mean more to my DD, and that their daughter could wait until she got to go herself.

Well, happy endings everywhere - my DD was insanely happy, and their DD has a breakfast at CRT scheduled for this Sept. :cool1:

Great story! Those parents of that boy have raised him well!!!

Heh, I bought a swimsuit from goodwill...I do draw the line at underwear though :thumbsup2 I recently lost quite a bit of weight, and refused to spend 60-90$ on a suit, found one for $5 and its become my favorite. My MIL buys extra suits all the time from goodwill to leave at camp, that way if someone needs one we have it, or if someone walks off with one, were not out the money.

We must be lucky with our Plato's Closet. It's clean, has reasonable prices for second hand clothes, doesn't smell. My only complaint is the store is small and usually the clothes are packed so tight you can barely move them to see anything.

I have 3 Goodwill stores within 10 miles of me. All have "flat" pricing unless otherwise marked (up) on clothes. All kids clothes are $2.99, women's shorts are $4.99, pants are $5.99 etc. One is just skank nasty, but it is the only one with drive up drop off where I can back my van up to the loading dock for donations, so I occasionally go in, but I haven't bought anything there in a few years. It smells, the few things I look at have a dirty feel to them and the staff is non-existent or rude. Another is in a town with a reputation for money - the store is clean, the staff is generally helpful or at least you can find them, and only a few things have that dirty feel; but the prices! oh wow, I don't know who prices things for them but they are seriously overestimating things. They will price those glass vases you get from the florist at $5-6, the "free" lunchboxes that come with kids meals at the local amusement park at $3, they mark up clothing often, especially the stuff that Target donates. They rip off the clearance tag and price at near new prices, if it has a tag on it they will ask nearly that much. To make your donations you have to park and carry things in through a separate door (this is fine), they yell at you if you park in the loading zone near the door, they yell at you if you take a shopping cart into the parking lot to bring in your stuff. The third one just has an unmanned bin up front for donations, but the store is clean, the prices are reasonable (those same vases would be $1.25 at this one) and the staff is always around and friendly. I've actually found better quality stuff at this store than the one in the money town. But I can get Aero polos for my dd here or at Plato's for $4 ($2 if it's the right color week at Goodwill or clearanced at Plato) so I get to be choosy. Of course if I time it right and deal with the crowds I can also get the Aero polo's new from the "outlet" for around $6.

We have other thrift stores around, some associated with the childrens hospital, a few DAV stores and then some random ones - happens when there are so many military bases nearby. All of these are hit and mostly miss, so I don't bother. But I feel fortunate for our Plato's, everything we've gotten there has been great and I can't wait till the $15 stuff a bag in August.
