My dad, who is 72, has an elevated PSA (5.5). Dr. is sending him to urologist. He's had kidney cancer and melanoma so cancer is always a worry for him. I read at this level he has a 25% chance of it being cancer. What worries me is that he has had lower back/hip pain lately which CAN be a symptom of porstate cancer. He also has had a couple UTIs...which can be a sign, but dr. also said the UTI by itself could cause the PSA to be high. So we are hoping for the best.

Just wanted to add we are also waiting for reults for my sis-in-law's biopsy (parathyroid). Things are a bit stressful right now.

Sounds like you've got enough worry to last a looong time. I hope all test results come back favorable. :grouphug:

Sorry you and your dad/family are going through so much right now. I do hope that everything is o.k.

The PSA is not a very good test. It has alot of false positives and false negatives. This is the scale for PSA

PSA levels under 4 ng/mL: "normal"

4 to 10 ng/mL: 20 to 30% risk

10 to 20 ng/mL: 50 to 75% risk

Above 20 ng/mL: 90%.

Best to see the urologist and not judge anything based on this test.

Luvwinnie, I work for a radiation oncology department. We see many, many prostate cancer patients. 99% of them with the proper treatment, whether hormones and radiation, or surgery are fine.

Please feel free to PM me if you think I could answer any questions for you. (Well, not me  I'm just the receptionist, but the nurse would be more than happy to talk with you.)

Dad 68 had high psa too. They did biopsy and its all ok. They just keep an eye on it. It generally goes up with age so they have to watch it well. I pray your Dad is ok too! :grouphug:

My Dad has had an extremely high PSA for about 7 years now. He had lots of testing the first few years and since they've never found anything (I think they've biopsied every molocule of the thing at this point) they are just calling it the way it is and leaving it be. Hopefully your Dad's will turn out to be no big deal.

Best wishes!

My DH has had urology problems and I fully understand the importance of that PSA. Prayers and Pixie Dust coming your way. Please keep us posted.
