I'm not criticizing you in any way, but you do understand that's part of the problem, right? By definition, in the times before this parade, it's dark. There are limited walkways in the hub and the parade route. And they have people sitting down on curbs and claiming spots hours before the parade begins. It's dangerous and it's a crowd mitigation nightmare, especially when you factor in long days, scooters and strollers and language barriers. And you have to factor in phones and tablets and everyone recording everything and the fights that come from that when thousands of people find themselves crammed into limited spaces.
I'm not trying to defend them for the decision, but I can understand it if they decide to get rid of the dark parades. I was there last week and it was a nightmare just trying to walk 100 yards immediately before, during and after the parade. And that time of year, when there's not a lot of gap between the parade and Wishes, I can see people claiming spots and not moving, clogging it up even further.
HKDL already has their own version of Paint the Night. Is Paint The night heading to Hong Kong in October?? Saw this on FB

I thought Paint the Night was at Hong Kong first? like has been for quite some time already? Disneyland's version was a copy of that parade, IIRCIf that is true, talk about another huge kick in the face to the WDW faithful. What's next, packing up EE, BTMR, TT and ToT and shipping them all overseas???

May I ask what the reservations are about going around CA on your own? We spent a week at DLR last year, with 2 days in San Diego (1 for Sea World, 1 for the San Diego Zoo), and we didn't get to everything we wanted to. We're headed back in November for another 5 days at DLR, and 1 at Universal Hollywood (to see their Wizarding World of Harry Potter that just opened this spring). If I could take 13 days to be there, I'd be a happy camper. With 13 days, I'd definitely spend some of that time at some of the other SoCal attractions, but I could easily spend 9 or 10 of those days at DLR to take in all the small shows/characters/entertainment around the parks as well as the big rides/shows. I would take a much slower pace each day with that kind of time. This move seriously has me considering canceling our upcoming trip in Feb/March and booking one at DLR. The only thing holding me back right now is the fact that I can't imagine going for the 13 days we already booked at BC. It has been quite a while since we spent any length of time at DLR aside from one day at DL last summer while vacationing in LA but 13 days would be hard to fill up since it is just a mother/daughter trip and I would not rent a car or want to travel around CA on our own. I also don't want to reduce the number of days. Any other major negative announcements will push me over the edge though.

Am I the only one not excited about the possibility of Paint the Night?
I watched a video and was not impressed.
Hardly any classic characters and the song is a bad choice and will not stand the test of time.
I am a big chicken about driving in So Cal!! We spent 2 weeks between LA and San Diego last summer but that was with my husband and son and my husband is comfortable driving anywhere and never gets lost.![]()
I, on the other hand, while having no issues at all driving in NYC or Boston, am positively terrified by the idea of driving around the LA area.![]()
I agree that there is SO MUCH to do there-we have been quite a few times and love it along with San Francisco and northern CA. My daughter, who will be starting her junior year in college in a few weeks, is looking into spending her senior year in So Cal so I do see a time when I will have to get over my fear and just do it but for a vacation it is just too much stress.
Last summer, we actually rented a house on Mulholland Drive for a week and had Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel as our neighbors-Lol. We could see UH from our deck-the view was insane. Then we spent a week on Coronado. It was a fantastic trip.
I hope you enjoy your next trip out there!

The music seems to be a combination of Baroque Hoedown and some pop song that I agree seems wrong, but it doesn't totally ruin it for me.Am I the only one not excited about the possibility of Paint the Night?

You are not the only one. I've watched the video a few times...ugh. Not a fan. The music is grating and not enough classic characters. I'm sure it is better in person though.

But to me, MSEP has never been about the specific characters, and always about the presentation and technology. I'm getting tired of the overuse of flat panel LED screens, yet as long as the characters are ones we'll recognize and remember, I don't think it matters whether they're 50, 30, 10, or 5 years old.
I'm basing this on YouTube videos. I suspect I'll never have a chance to see it in person.
