I'm not up on IPODS and such....but just curious... I saw an ad at Kohls for the day after where it has an MP4 player (music AND video) on sale for 29.99 regularly 99.99
Do you think it'll be a worthy device? My daughter is 13 (thinkin about 8yr old too to avoid the fighting), but she really doesn't take GREAT care of things.. She's gotten cellphones, video cameras and the like, all usually end up less than desirable looking.... If it's an offbrand, do you think it's worth it, or should I spend the extra for a name brand ?

My friend got her two boys an off brand last year for Christmas. (They are very rough on everything!) She told them that when they proved they could take care of an item and treat it with respect, she'd get them an Ipod. That's what they're getting for Christmas this year!! Maybe you should go ahead and get your daughter a less expensive off brand and if she really likes it and uses it a lot and treats it well, then spring for an Ipod next year. Good luck!

I'd love to know the answer to this.

IMO, with an IPOD you are paying a premium for the name.

I've had a couple of Sansa MP3 players over the last few years and been very happy with them, and at a much lower cost then an IPOD would have been.

Thanks guys!
But....i've seen on craigslist where they have nanos for about 75... is that a good deal?
Whats a nano do?? LOL

With non-name brands you just have to do the research.

It wasn't as cheap as you're seeing, but hubby just bought a Cowon D2, and so far 3 of his techie co-workers have ordered them too! I wouldn't like it, it's too small (he watches movies on it that he puts onto SD cards), but he LOVES it. Really good pictures, terrific sound.

We both have now-discontinued, then refurbished, Rio MP3 players, and I really like mine. He did too, they work really well! And until he got this Cowon he thought the sound was excellent, but now he realizes that the Cowon is even better.

Hubby still resists the lure of the Apple, even though I'm typing on a Macbook that he secretly LOVES using over his silly Dell (he had to get rid of Vista that it came with, and downloaded Linux (specifically Ubuntu) b/c he hated Vista so much), so he wouldn't even think of the Nano type things.

Just do the research!

dear bumbershoot

I have to agree with you about the Cowon D2, it is rated amongst hifi circles as being the best sound quality available from a digital device.

The onboard amp is powerful enough to drive studio quality headphones and its on board sound processing is also rated as number one.

The New Cowon O2 is even better, but I have not heard one yet.

I have the origibal 30gb Zen Vision M, the descendant of the Zen Jukebox that Apple copied to make the first ipod.

I have compared my Zen to most generations of Ipod and I am very happy with the sound quality.

My next player will be the Cowon 02
