Moved from the Budget Board: anyone else eliminating High Fructose Corn Syrup

Has anyone else seen the PRO-HFCS commercials. I saw two different ones today.

I have not seen them yet, but someone did send me an email about it.

I'm seeing it as a good thing.....means (I hope) that the corn industry is starting to feel consumer preference. Let's just hope those commercials don't fool anyone.

LOL, I stumbled over here to read a bit, and was so glad someone mentioned those awful commercials. I haven't totally cut out HFCS, but I'm making in-roads. However, I was deeply insulted by those commercials b/c they simply treat the average person like an idiot. You notice they don't address any direct concerns? When they ask the person in the commercial protesting the HFCS, "what's wrong with HFCS?" the person just stumbles and mutters with no answer...as though none of us have any REAL reason why we want to eliminate it? And that response, "like sugar, in moderation it's fine." Well gee...that convinces me. Except it's in EVERYTHING! :rotfl:

I do agree with one thing in the above article. There is too much sugar, whatever kind, in everything.

Something interesting I noticed just yesterday. I try to avoid sugared-sodas but man are they hard to give up. I have noticed in the past that a full-sugar soda so often makes my stomach hurt a little if I drink it without eating anything. And...I know this is gross...gives me sticky spit. Well yesterday I drank a Jones soda I was curious about. And we're talking the sugar bombs of all sugar bombs -- Orange Cream Soda variety. Sticky spit center! But you know...nothing happened. No stomach cramp, no stickiness..nada. And the difference is cane sugar vs. HFCS. Go figure.

Bumbershoot, I thought of you this morning in Whole Foods - they had this Fluff-type product - it's called Suzanne's Ricemellow Creme. It's made with brown rice syrup and has no corn products in it.

I remember you talking about S'mores and although this wouldn't be quite the same as toasting a marshmallow over the fire, you could probably make oven s'mores with it.

Those commercials are so insulting.
How about this one instead-

Someone eating a sandwich
Me eating one- pouring sugar on my bread.
What are you doing?
Oh just making sure our breads are the same- you know calorie and sugar wise since yours is loaded with HFCS
You know the Corn lobby is very powerful and managed to get it into everything- Even things you might not expect- like this sandwich.

It just makes me want to be even more careful about what I buy. Guess what Corn lobby we are not all idiots and all have reasons for boycotting the HFCS. Must be making you nervous if you had to advertise about it.

I think that's it exactly!

Those commercials are so irritating to me since I know HFCS does have an affect on both my son and me.

Thanks to Leader of the Club for posting that article! I am glad to see this thread is still alive.

I have been trying to stay away from HFCS and also MSG which is in a lot of packaged foods. I think both contribute to weight gain. I'm not a health nut by any means. I like pop (soda is what everyone south of here calls it, right?) and I haven't cut it out just cut it down a lot. I'm not cutting everything out but I've cut it all down significantly by making my own bread and side dishes and food from scratch. I like to see what you guys are doing and good luck!

Yikes! Makes me glad we gave up HFCS a year ago!

Today, I dropped by the grocery store where I found Kosher Coke last year to see if it was out yet this year. No sign of it, but I'm going to start checking weekly.

Here's a link to the actual study in PDF format. It gives the full
list of products tested and the amounts of mercury found in each.

Keep reading those labels! I almost bought a can of kidney beans with HFCS the other day. I just happened to glance at the label as I put it in my cart. Why, Oh, Why, would there be HFCS in kidney beans?

I just noticed that on Thomas's English muffins it now says "Made with NO HFCS":cheer2:

I think they used to use it- but I am happy to see it gone! Bought my english muffins today!

Bleah!

I won't buy from Contadina anymore b/c right in the tomato paste section, where I never feel the need to read labels, they have a tomoto paste PRODUCT. Right after I put it in the dish I was making, I noticed it wasn't normal paste, that it had cheese and HFCS in it. Augh. Had to make DH and DS something else, and I ate the dish with the tomato paste gunk in it. Wrote them an impassioned email, got an apology and a week later, got several coupons. Nice of them, but I really hate getting coupons for something I'm not going to buy anymore!

Fox and Friends will be doing a segment on this this weekend. It was just advertised. I don't know whether it will be Saturday or Sunday, they just said this weekend. I wonder if THIS will get companies to change their policies.

I wonder if you rinsed the kidney beans off- would that eliminate the HFCS? I think it would be the liquid and not in the bean itself....

Great thread! I've started phasing out HFCS since I started reading this. Switched my yogurt, our jam and our bread so far. I'm going to keep working on it little by little each week. DH won't let me waste food, so we're finishing up the stuff with the HFCS in it, but I figure we'll be able to phase out 90% of it within 4-6 weeks. I'm already noticing a difference after I eat my daily yogurt...thanks everyone for posting your thoughts and experiences!

Yes they did....I stopped buying them. Kids were not happy. They are now..since I can buy them once again!!

Now...if all other food manufacturers would do the same, we can stop reading labels!!

Companies will change their policies when the consumer stops buying their products. I stop buying and send emails to the companies.

I am trying to cut them out of our food too. Well mostly dd's, I eat mostly low carb anyway. But reading the labels carefully lately, I have noticed a bunch of other nasty stuff. Lots of Campbell's soup has got MSG. And the frozen cheese pizzas I usually buy for dd have pork and chicken extracts! :scared: In cheese pizza??

What kind of difference do you notice?
