Most hated baby names

I understand, but I do have a soft spot in my heart for the name Bertha. There was an older lady at my church growing up named Bertha. She was the sweetest lady. If I had a second daughter that might be her middle name, but I would have to find a good first name to go with it.

Gertrude, obviously!

Or Agnes. ;)

I don't like nicknames in general, but I like Gertrude because I like classic names and because it's got a cute nickname imo. Gert, Gertie, those are cute, spunky I think.

Bertha ends up at Bert ....

I know a teenaged Martha; that one I'm not fond of the nickname but like the name itself.

My DD's name, Hunter, made the boy list--"too violent" lol.

My dog, Jackson, made the boy list too. :) Of course, I did not name him, he's a rescue dog & came with his name but we like it. :)
I love the name Hunter! And the child, of course. :goodvibes Too violent? It's not like naming your kid "Killer." (Altho, my niece had a little white kitty named "Killer", or as my niece used to call her, "Tiller the Tat".)

None of my kids are on the list. But I think it's a dumb list anyway...an informal poll?? That's meaningful. NOT.

Personally, I don't like super trendy names and absolutely despise "creative" (ie, "annoying") spellings. If I were to have a child now (a horrifying thought) I'd go back to more traditional names, like John, Michael, etc.

Agree with everything *except* Gertrude, Michael ('it's too boring' is the problem with the naming trends in this country and people's stupidity in general - how is Michael boring but Jayden [beyond popular for the past however many years and spawning as many like-ended derivatives as it has] not? Also, some invented mess with a 'y', a 'k', an apostrophe and three syllables plus -den is not 'unique' and not boring it's 'illiterate.' ) and Tristan, just because it's a classic name.

Well that's just it. People actually think they're being cute and original by those weird spellings. As if the reason nobody was doing it before is because nobody thought of it before. Of course there is always Jim Hogg who had the bright idea to name his daughter Ima.

I have twins in my kindergarten class names Bertha and Cornelius. The parents seem so normal too... :confused3

Both of my twins names are on that list.. we love their names and honestly don't think the list has too much validity.:confused3

I don't think Michael is boring. I think it's classic. Now, I do think John is boring although I like Jonathan. Interestingly, I work with a client whose two daughters are 1 and 2 on the list, lol.

The girls name I've never cared for is Crystal. Not on the list though.

Gertrude, obviously!

Or Agnes. ;)

I was just reading an article somewhere about changes in pronunciation over time and one example given was the name Agnes. Apparently in the Elizabethan era in England, the G was silent. There were also two variant pronunciations: ANN-us and ANN (in which case the S was also silent).

I find it funny that michael is considered a boring name. It's a classic one that stands the test of time. I don't like trendy names. I think if parents go for one they should consider a classic middle name so their poor kid has something to fall back on. It'll come in handy if the child wants to be an attorney, for instance, rather than a dancer.

It's the list I take issue with, not the names. Most hated by Laura Wattenberg. Who cares.

Name your child what ever you see fit. We all did. :)

OMG! That's soooo much worse! :rotfl2:

True confession: When a friend and I were in HS and college, if we'd meet guys who pestered us for out names/numbers when we did not feel any attraction whatsoever, she would give them the name "Agnes" and I would tell them I was "Gertrude." Half the time, we had made our escape before they had picked their jaws up off the floor. :lmao:

I like Michael, and I like Jackson. Otherwise I agree with the list .. most of those names I dont like. A friend of mine has three kids with names on that list.

You should name your child what you want, but please consider your child's feelings! I taught kindergarten for several years, and it was obvious that little girls don't like having boys' names any more than boys like having girls' names. A woman I work with has several grandchildren whose names are a parent's name spelled backwards - seriously. You might think it's cute or creative, but please think of your child......

Can't think of objections to Tristan, for instance, but there's some sort of trend to play with the spelling, so it would come out something like Trysstynn.

I usually gave them the name "Maggie Thatcher" and they never got it.

:rotfl2: I cannot STAND ol' lady names!!

What's funny to me is that so many other "old lady names" are coming back into fashion. Most of my and my DH's great-aunts have names that are showing up in my niece and nephews' generation: Emma, Esther, Audrey, Louise... :rotfl2:

Nevaeh ("Heaven" spelled backward and one of the most divisive names around, according to Wattenberg.)
2. Destiny (People dislike names that confer a virtue onto a child, Wattenberg said — and many felt associated this name with exotic dancers.)
3. Madison
4. Mackenzie
5. McKenna
6. Addison (An example of a masculine named turned feminine, which many people dislike, Wattenberg said)
7. Gertrude (People said this name is "ugly.")
8. Kaitlyn (For its "made-up" spelling.)
9. Makayla
10. Bertha
11. Hope

Boys:
1. Jayden
2. Brayden
3. Aiden
4. Kaden (These rhyming names struck many as overdone, Wattenberg reported.)
5. Hunter (Too much like a last name or "too violent.")
6. Hayden
7. Bentley (People dislike brand-name names, Wattenberg found, calling them "trashy")
8. Tristan
9. Michael (Too boring, according to some.)
10. Jackson

I know several Kaitlyns-one is like 18!
I also know girl named Jayden

I have an Addison (born 11/05)... She is the only kid in her k-2 school with that name, but when we were on vacation in Hawaii in Dec we met so many girls named Addison! Honestly, I can't imagine her named anything else! :cutie:
