Month of September WISH Walkers and Runners Training Thread

Hi everyone! I'm new to the WISH boards but I'm glad I found you all! I'm officially signed up for the WDW Half and I started training this week! It's great to find a board full of Disney runners and all of the tips and support you guys offer. :goodvibes

So that being said, I'm using the Hal Higdon novice program and although I'm on week one of "official" training, I'm on week three on the calendar (I've been running for a while and I'm ready to up the mileage a bit). I'm heading to WDW in 8 days (not that I'm counting!) and I'm hoping to keep up the running while I'm there. Anyone have any tips?

I've had some patella issues too. In fact my knee buckled 1/2 way through the Princess 1/2 this past March. I was thinking of taping it for the W&D. Where did you learn how to tape it? Does it help? I tried a brace & it was just way too uncomfortable. Ugh.

Whoops - that should have been tapering  I'm too quick at hitting that send button sometimes.

I have a pack of KT tape that I never used from the Disney goody bag last year. They've got instructions here. You might be able to use their instructions and regular sports tape, I'm not sure. I'll give it a try on my 5 miler Sunday. I also know that if you buy the KT tape at an expo, they'll tape you up and it's suppose to last for a couple of days even through the shower.

Cloudnut - Welcome! I was in WDW during the first week of October last year. I'd recommend getting out early because it gets hot quickly. Plus you have the humidity to deal with. Even if you normally don't run with a bottle of water, I'd take one anyway. I was staying at BC and CS and both places are nice to run at.

WalkingintheFog - Welcome! Hello to a fellow Canuck! I'm doing the Scotiabank half as well! Maybe I'll see you there and say hi! Another WISH'er will be there as well and she's walking too so keep an eye out for the bright green shirts and hats! Is the Resolution Run part of the Running Room?

Maura - Good luck on your 10 miler!

AFM - My knee is still somewhat sore so I skipped my run yesterday but still went into the gym. Will try an 8 miler tomorrow with the brace to see how it holds up on a longer run. If I get desperate, I might go in next week for an ART treatment to "patch" things up until the 1/2 next Sunday.

Dale - I second what Carrie said. Midfoot, short stride. At least that's what DH keeps telling me to do! :rotfl:

WalkingintheFog - Welcome! Hope you get to do your Half, but take it easy and do what the doc recommends. Better to sit it out now and still be able to run later. Just don't read what I'm doing later on... :rolleyes1

Beth- Welcome! Great job signing up for the Half!

Maura - It's amazing how much the running gear adds to the laundry. I'd gotten lazy while I was injured, and suddenly I'm remembering how much more often I need to do it. :laundy:

Cloudnut - Like Vicky said, run early in the morning. It's much easier to get it done BEFORE you hit the parks! There's also a nice trail between WL and FW; it all depends on where you're staying.

Carrie - DH almost fell over last week when on our first run together post-injury I told him I'd really missed running with him. After fighting it for so long, I've really gotten used to it. And it's definitely made me a better runner. Just don't tell him that. :ssst:

It appears that I'm going to do MCM, one way or another. I did a 13 mile LR on Saturday, then followed it with a 3 mile run on Monday, 4 miles of speedwork at the track on Tuesday, and 4 miles with DH last night. Tuesday's intervals were almost at the same pace they were before I stopped running, so I was pleasantly surprised. The stamina isn't quite the same, but I survived 4 800-meter intervals without dying. We're doing a very hilly 10 mile run on Saturday, and I expect I'll struggle a bit with that. I've dropped back 2 pace groups from where I started the season just to make sure I can finish the runs, but last week's felt really easy. I'm pretty sure it's not recommended to accelerate the distance like I am, but if I'm going to do 26 in 6 weeks, I don't have much choice!

Jackie

Vicky and Jackie--Thanks for the tips! We're DVCers and we're staying at BLT. I think I'll try that path between WL and the Campground. I'm worried about getting 3 runs in, especially a long run, since we're going with some friends and my family is going to be there (at another resort). We were there the first week of October last year too, and boy was it hot! I do have some experience running with the humidity, but fingers crossed, it won't be terrible!

jmasgat:
SI joint = Sacroiliac Joint.... apparently we all have 2!
They sit between the Sacrum & the Ilia.......Hip bone is connected to the, Back bone!
Hoping it settles down!
And yeah, I certainly notice this summer I have tons of more laundry! And more sneakers in rotation than before!

I've heard of Chi running, it sounds sensible. Do you do it?

pj & d:
you guys are funny! And love the pic of the kid with the hat!

Bunnyfoo:
yes! STWM! I'm definitely in the last corral, no delusions! Walk walk walk, run if I can, walk walk! Wardrobe still under consideration! Beautiful Teal green top or my Walmart hotpink sleeveless top topped with my nerdy Red baseball hat!
(Yes, the Resolution Run is a Running Room Run... it was that or a Polar Bear Dip on New Year's Day)

Thanks! That is our granddaughter! Goodness, she might of been 5 months then. (she'll be two the beginning on January). Makes me realize I need to update my photos.

We did our seven miles today. I realized today that I am going to WALK the full. I don't think I'll ever get back to running. I want to be able to enjoy this race (as much as I can) and gasping for air and really red face, dripping sweat, is not quite as enjoyable.

I'm definitely going to have to hit the tape spot at the expo. I didn't see it at the Princess, but I heard about it. I did 11.33 today & the ITB started acting up & my knee started buckling around 8 mi. or so. My time would've been good otherwise, so if that happens again at the W&D I'm gonna be sooooo mad!:headache:

Hi Fellow WISHers

And here i thought it was all because i was so sexy looking :cool1::thumbsup2:banana: in my running gear. :rotfl::rotfl2:

Question for you folks; Any ideas why my heel is hurting the day after i run? :confused3It doesn't seem to matter whether i run 3, 5 or 7 miles, my heel hurts a little the next day. I am running on the ball of my foot also not heel to toe.

Well, it looks like I'm making my trip to Mickey's Halloween 5K all by myself! DH has just come down with shingles. He'd be in way too much pain to make the trip even halfway enjoyable, so he'll stay home and take care of the dogs and kiddos. So now I'm planning a solo trip to the World instead of an adults only!

I'm kind of struggling with this whole race thing. For some reason my workouts these last couple of weeks have been horrible. Where I was failry confident that I'd run at least a 15:00 pace, I'm just hoping to finish and not get swept. Please send any extra pixie dust my way!

I could go with you MamaCrush. I could cheer you on and push you in a wheelchair after the race if you need it.

MamaCrush--From what I read, there will be so much energy at the race, you'll be able to push to meet that 15mm pace! I'll send some pixie dust your way from the BLT since the race is full and it looks like I won't be able to get in!

How about pushing me during the race??? :lmao:

I could do that too! :thumbsup2
You will have a great time. Have you ever done a solo trip? I just did the DL half solo. The only draw back I see is if you are driving alone. The drive home seems so long.

I have not done a solo trip and I've always wanted to do one. Maybe I'll finally get to see some of the shows! If it weren't that I'll be reaching such a significant personal milestone in running the 5K, I probably wouldn't even miss DH! :ssst: Don't tell him that though! When he was coming, we were going to make the 9 hr drive, but now I'm flying. Much better!

Cloudnut? Have I met you at DVCNews (I'm PoohsPal there). Either way. Welcome to WISH!

Maura - Get that 10-mil;er in? Congrats on signing up for Detroit! We'll be on teh MAgic, so not happening ofr us this year, but enjoy the new bling! So jealous!

Carrie, no problem I DO get frustrated, cause I'm working so hard and he's not breaking a sweat. But am looking forward to running through the parks with him.
It is a wonderful thing ot share. Just hang in there! Wise decision to walk the full. Less than a year post-surgery is awfully soon. Sorry it's not what you wanted, though. But jsut think how much easier it will be to PR the next time. ;)

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to try my best in the next month to consistantly get out there.
OCnsitencey works wonders! now to practice what I preach. :upsidedow

The knee and ITB did pretty good. I wore a patella brace which worked. The only bad thing was that the velcro was itchy so I'm not sure how it will be on a longer run.
Can you get sommem kindof a sleeve to go beneath the brace? Glad i tworked for you! Hope tyou can fix the irritation!

Ok folks, the point of view from the faster running partner:rolleyes1, Running 5K's i admit i have gotten to the point of "Hurry up already" (sorry Patty).
I know it's frustrating on your end too. It's hard to go slow. Kudos for trying to elp Patty along. By race time, you'lll pretty well know how much "help" she can take. ;) It will all be good come tha tfinish line! As or the heel, Don't know for sure, but dh had heel pain with his achillies issues. (And the heel pain actually showed up worse than the shin/achillies pain) Orthodics and stretching did wonders for him.

Joining in!
I have no advice for you, but Welcome to WISH!

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: Your secret;s safe with me! After my first solo race, I let teh cat out of teh bag to dh. I was all alone and hurtin gin my first Minnie adn just wanted to cry. (Pathetic as I had done loger solo trianing runs) I had to admit to dh that i missed him during the run. For my CHicago tri last year (biggest one ever at that point), I was dying on the run. I kept telling myself not to make dh run with me if he caught up. His face at teh turn around was so great. Was thrilled when he asked if he could finish with me because he was having a bad race. (Not thrilled tha the was having a bad race, but you know) So, he knows that at elast I like racing with hime.

I've heard of Chi running, it sounds sensible. Do you do it?
I try. it helped me a lot. Good to read the book, but the class was most helpful. Still have to remind myself not to fall back into bad habits, but it does work well.

SO sorry about dh! I'm thinking extra stress may effect your runs! My best races tend ot be after some of my worst trainign runs. Hang in there!

Well, had a 6 miler turned 4 due to rain SUnday. Pathetic, but I was glad of it. Really need to work on being able todo LRs teh day after core. Still beign sore 2 days later is not good.

Well MamaC, if this is ur 1st solo, welcome to the solo crowd! We would have never dreamed of solo trips before- before the 2nd baby came that is!lol. Now when we weigh out the pros & cons & $$$ of solo vs even just DH coming along, it just doesn't pay off for a weekend type trip. It's a mixed bag of feelings going solo, but overall, a fun & empowering experience!
