Month of September WISH Walkers and Runners Training Thread

Carrie--It's me :goodvibes I mean, how many cloudnuts could there possibly be, right?
:rotfl: You just never know. I have had people not be who I thought. Didn't remeber the 220 after your name either. Yeah, I skim wayyy too much.

Hey, I just dropped off a motivator at the recycling center. Oh wait....that was a motor. But hey...maybe that would come in handy for your running too! ;) Hang in there. When the weather cools off, I bet it comes back. I hear warm apple cider and cinnamon donuts can have restorative powers. Maybe a trip to a cider mill is in order!

I don't know what model you have, but my motivator works better when I have a chocolate cake or cookies in the house. :lmao: I know I have to get out and get something done to help my motivator from gunking up.

Hope you find a fix, although I know sometimes my "motivator" just needs a couple of days off every now and then without me feeling "bad" about it.

I will send pixie dust too...doggone it I can't find that pixie dust thing so just use your imagination.

Hi gang,

I had an 8 mile run today, which was okay. But the weird thing that happened is that I have begun to experience mild discomfort in h ow my training is going. The thing is....it's going well. I have made it through the summer heat, run 4-20 milers, and am not injured. So why do I have an uncomfortable feeling that "something is going to happen".

I realize this falls in the "don't think too hard" category. And I am, of course, happy with how I feel. Maybe because it's that I don't want to be too complacent or confident that I can hit my race goal.

I think as it gets closer to a race, I tend to worry I'll hurt myself (doing anything) and not be able to do the run/walk and all that training was for nothing.

This is me, too. I start being really careful. A training injury would be one thing, but busting an ankle jumping off of the truck quite another. I've been fortunate so far. Almost two years of running and nothing hurts.

My long run last weekend was a stinker. Twelve miles and I got slower and slower. Tuesday and today were great. I just went out too fast Saturday. This is a step back weekend - six miles. I've got the Kansas City half Marathon in my plan October 16. Looking forward to the race

I've been gunking up my motivator with ice cream.

I may be doing Mickey as a solo trip. DGF went last year. It was my first half and my first time back to WDW in a long time. I'm not sure what's going to happen in January.

Well, fellow racers/trainers/runners/walkers....my final 20 mile training run is in the books. If you had asked me back in the late spring if I could complete a marathon training plan that had 5 twenty-milers, I would have said you were crazy. But we all know that this running thing is at least half a mental game. So it took a while to feel confident, but I got there.

If I flame out in my marathon in 3 weeks, I will be pissed (seriously, I will be). However, I believe I have accomplished another one of those "I can't POSSIBLY do THAT" kind of goals. So today I celebrate that. And I bet that every WISHer out there has something they can celebrate, too.

So your mission for today is to figure out what it is. Maybe it's running a whole mile, maybe it's walking above the sweep pace, maybe it's just getting out the door when you really, really, really didn't want to.

Whatever it is, congratulations. Take the time to pat yourself on the back. "cause it's not just the races that we should celebrate, it's everything we do to get there, and all the new things we accomplish along the way.

Enough philosophying, I've got some serious noshing to do!

Question for you more experienced, I've always gotten shin splints when I start and by mile two they are gone. But since starting up running (mostly walking) again this past month, I am getting extreme pain in the sides of my legs, burning pain, same 'area' as the shin splint pain but on the outer side of my leg. I've had a high ankle sprain before and this is just a bit higher where the pain is. It did ease up this time after three miles.

Last weekend, the pain lasted for a couple days; then during the week when I used the TM at the Y, same pain, so I used the calf machine after wards (while doing other lower body stuff) and it seemed that I didn't have the pain anymore that day.

They don't feel bad now, but is so intense when I am in the early part of getting my miles in. Any idea what is going on?

I don't know if you're experiencing the same thing I did, but I had a similar problem this spring/early summer. I'd start the run feeling fine, but about a half mile in would develop almost paralyzing pain in my shins/calves/lower legs. If I could make it through 2 or 3 miles, it would go away, but getting to that point involved tears sometimes.

I talked to a trainer, and she suggested that I do some warmup exercises before I started. Simple things, like tapping my toes on the floor, jumping around on my toes, even tapping my heels on the floor too. Anything to get the blood moving in the lower legs. If I had to drive to the greenway I'd do them in the car at stoplights. Surprisingly enough, it fixed the problem. The hardest part was remembering to do them before I got ready to start running.

It might be worth a try... :confused3

Ditto!! I am entering my "Freakin' Paranoid" phase. I am planning a bike ride tomorrow, but am always afraid some automobile-bound idiot will hit me!

But that's only because it has happened before.

Jackie, thanks for the tip. It sounds so similar to what you are describing. I'll have to remember that next weekend.

Maura - Love that training is going so well adn you had another celbration of doing what you could not!!!!!!!

I've been gunking up my motivator with ice cream.
:thumbsup2 I think you figured my porblem out! Good thing ice cream season is almost over!

But that's only because it has happened before.
 I knew this but it still makes me. We did mostly bike path work this year. I know that I have to movve onto the street if I am to attemp a full IM. Still scares me to death.

To answer Maura's celebration, I am still flying high thinking that I did a half ironman this year. i sepnt 4 years tellign xterratri that I coudl never do a tri and have come so incredibly far!

OK, so I found my motivator!!!! Who knew it was in SOuth Bend??? :confused3

We were planning on doing our 8-miler after core Friday and havign it out of the way before meeting up with Cam & Howard at Notre Dame for the weekend. Well, it got rained out, so Scott had us pack to run camplus. There is so much going on that we had to go early to get it in. Were afraid we'd miss out on the pre-game day feel, though. No way. It was awesome!!!!! Seeing the gold dome in the dark. The Grotto in the dark was awesome. Stumbling onto so many cool building in the dark. MAde our way around ot the stadium as it got lighter. At 7:30 am the tailgaters were already up and running. SO fun! I was so slow, I'm blaming it on taking pix, but it was so incredible to have fun running agin. The rain out was the best thing that ever happened to me! We only ended up with 7.5 due to miscalculating the route back, but I was pulling some major neg splits, so I know 8 would have been fine. Just had a blast!!!!!! And we got to see Cam and Howard on top of it. Awesome! SO great to feel good about runnign again! :cloud9: SOmeone please reind me of this tomorrow. ;)

Hi All!

I have some serious catching up to do :)

Maura you will do GREAT! That medal is going to look wonderful on you :thumbsup2

Ahhh Carrie, you told me you were out of town this past weekend but couldn't remember where but I DID remember to breath :thumbsup2 Came close to panicking but a couple of deep breaths.

I have 2 races to report in with.

9/19 (Sun) I did my first TRAIL 5K. 39:03 time with an avg of 12:36. Maura you'll appreciate where it was. The area your Muddy Buddy obstacle portion was held. Only I'm not sure if you went into the meadow. We started in the parking lot and straight into a slight incline, curved to the next parking lot and into the woods. Not sure if it was the 1st left all I recall was being told that at Mile 1 we hit the hill. It seemed to plateau then rise and plateau again but when I say plateau I mean only a couple of feet. When I got to the top I was like "I have to RUN DOWN THAT!?!?!?" I did. Saying prayers for survival as I went. Hit the bottom and realized where I was. I know I have photos of this hill from going UP it the other way. Oh it didn't get flatter. Oh that was the worst of the hills but after that they just kept coming. I kept saying over and over "You idiot! you totally under estimated the race organizer" Happy to say, I'm not sure how I managed it but was not DLF! But 94 out of only 99. But I am happy with it. My 1st Trail Run done.

9/26 (Sun) my 9th Half Marathon. 2:57:00 Official time. :) Met some wonderful people. Spent the race with a lovely lady who kept me company. It was kinda scary not knowing the course. Thankfully she had run it the previous year so kept giving me the heads up on where the camera guys would be, where the coming inclines were and all the good stuff. We started with a pacer who was great but she dropped her flag and we kept on running. DH Ray was a dear and chased me around the course. Met me at Mile 1 and Mile 6. He had quite a hike to Mile 6 and had to rush back to the Finish just in time to get a pic of us racing to the finish.

Hit the gym last night and did a full upper body workout on the machines.

(oh Carrie!-->>>)I'm grateful that I can do a gym workout (with a short Ellip warm-up) the day after a sub-3 hr Half. Something I'd never thought I'd be able to do.

Happy Milestone Celebrations Everyone!!!! To those getting ready to travel down for Wine & Dine have safe travels and tons of fun!!!!

Feeling a little better but still freaked about the 10K I'm doing on Sunday. The weather is supposed to be cooler, which will be nice.

I just have to get through the first 4.1 miles in an hour - the race is on an island and it's closed to the public when we start, but we have to be clear of the ferry dock by 9:30 when workers will start coming in their trucks and stuff. And the dock is at mile 4.1. I'm making it easily in the gym - 12 minutes to spare - and my 5K times indicate that I should be ok. But I'm still a little freaked because I don't want to get swept.

Oy!! If only they'd said "We are assuming a 13 minute mile or better..." anywhere on the website.

Vertical - Race day adrenaline shoudl get you through. I think the fact that you're sticking it out even though you're unsure is an awesome victory!!!! Try to have fun adn just do what you can! :cheer2:

Diane - Awesome job on teh half!!! Way to go!! :cheer2: And you worked out the day after a race?????? :worship: I have NEVER done that!! Even races that were supposed to be training, I have skipped at least one workout after. Great job! Knew your efforts this summer would pay off!

Everyone on here is doing awesome! It's so inspiring to read about all the progress, races, etc. :lovestruc

As for me, this time tomorrow AM I will be at the airport to leave for the Mouse House for the Halloween 5K on Saturday morning! :scared1: I think I've figured out why my training has been so sucky for the last two weeks or so. I moved outside off the treadmill and was monitoring my pace carefully enough. Once I started doing so, I realized I was going out WAY too fast. So I'm feeling some better about the prospect of finishing the darn thing without being swept!

But as luck would have it, I haven't been able to put my theory to the test on the track. My left knee has been hurting since my Monday night training, bottom of the knee to the inside. Doesn't hurt when I walk-- only when I lift it. So I've been doing the smart thing and resting it. It's about 85% today, so hopefully by Saturday I'll be at 100%. I'll probably have to do some light running on Friday just to remind my body what it feels like!

Thanks to everyone who has been so encouraging since I've joined the WISH boards! :grouphug:

MamaCrush - Good luck this weekend! I'm sure you're going to do great in the 5K. It does take some adjustment when you switch from the TM to outside, but it's usually a good thing.

VerticalChaos - Carrie is right. Between adrenaline and the cooler weather, you should be fine. Generally in a race the biggest concern is going out too fast, so you'll probably have plenty of cushion when you make the ferry dock. Sounds like a fun race!

Diane - Great job on your races! What a machine!

Carrie - Reminding you that running is fun. That run sounds like it really was. I'll have to consider college campuses! DD said there's a route thru her campus, and then there's a greenway down by the river that we found, so I need to visit her and give it a try. There's actually a half marathon there this weekend, but I decided to forgo extra races while trying to get ready for MCM.

Maura - Yikes! 5 20-milers! And here I am planning to run MCM with no more than an 18 miler. But I'm following the get-there-while-injured plan, so I guess that's my excuse. I'm hoping to get in another 16 mile run in a couple of weeks, but if it doesn't happen, oh well. I know how long 26.2 is. I'll see it on the 31st - I hope!

Joan - I rewarded my motivator with a milkshake on Saturday. I figured after 18 miles it deserved something!

Well, it is what it is. I finished 18 (well, 17.5, but what's a half mile) on Saturday. I ran 13.5 with the 12:00 pace group (we averaged around 14:30-15:00 miles), then turned back and finished up by myself. I switched from 2:1 intervals to 3:1 and stepped up the pace, and had a couple of 13:30 miles before I slowed it down for the last mile. I felt pretty good when I finished; not so good on Sunday and Monday. My legs are definitely letting me know that I haven't put in the miles that I should have to be at this distance yet. Did a short 2 mile recovery run Monday night, then went to the track last night and did 5 800-meter intervals with 2:00 walk breaks in between. I think I'll do 10 miles the next 2 weekends, then a 16 miler the next one, 1 more 10 miler, and then the race will be here. Pretty sure I won't have a PR, but as long as I beat the bridge cutoff, I'll be happy considering 6 weeks ago I didn't think I'd be running at all!

Jackie

I'm following the just don't get hurt plan.

MamaCrush - It's going to be great! Rest a bit and enjoy the experience!

Jackie - Yes, 18 miles deserves something!

I've got 14 miles planned for Saturday. The Kansas City half Marathon is 10/16. Training run with water stops and a medal!! Sweet!

Ronda

Thanks Carrie and Jackie! I did push hard on Monday as if I was going out fast, so unless they're really late starting the race, I feel like I should be fine. I'll keep you guys posted!! :)
