There are only a limited number of places you can get on. You can go to the TTC and get on it there. Also, you can catch it at the Poly, GF, or CR. If you want to catch it a park, you need to be either at the MK or EPCOT. Hope this helps.
Unfortunately the monorail only goes to 2 parks- Magic Kingdom and Epcot. So if you are planning to hop between the 2 parks one day, you will get a chance to ride it. Or, on the day you're at MK or Epcot, you can take the monorail to one of the resorts for lunch, like the contemporary, grand floridean, or polynesian.
You will have to take the bus to either Epcot or Magic Kingdom and get on the Monorail there. I would get on whatever bus that comes first. You will have to transfere on to another monorail at the ticket and transportation center to reach either park. The monorail doesn't go straight through to either park. Don't forget to ask if you can sit up front when you get to the station, if no one else is sitting there you can ride with the driver and they usually give you a monorail license too. I was just thinking of the samething, about riding the monorail or first night there. My son loves it,he made us go out of our way on our last trip just to ride it.
I second the suggestion of eating somewhere and then doing a quick loop on the monorail. It's a lot of fun and since you are a resort guest, even if they are chekcing resort IDs (your room key) you will be fine! ENJOY!
Another idea is to take the Pop Century Bus to the Maigc Kingdom, then walk to the Contemporary. This way you can look at all the shops, check out the restaurants & once your done you can take the Resort Monorail from the Contemporary to the Polynesian & Grand Floridian & check those Resorts out as well.
Pop Centruy is located close to EPCOT. You will spend less time on a bus if you go to EPCOT to catch the monorail. Besides it is the longest ride on the monorail. My favorite is the ride from TTC to EPCOT since the monorail circles the park before coming into the station. Now the quest is to time your arrival back at EPCOT during the ending of Illuminations. You get to see the fireworks and still beat the crowd to the Pop Century bus back to the resort.
