MK construction - looked bad

I was also surprised at HOW much of the MK was being refurbed during our trip a few weeks ago.

Pretty much all of Main Street had tarp facades covering the tops of buildings. These weren't TOO bad because at least they had a Main Street theme. The area around Casey's had a wall around it but you could still get in.

Liberty Square had a huge walled off area.

Of course Fantasyland was in pretty bad shape, too-- especially Winnie the Pooh. It didn't even look open (though it was.)

I would think with the huge Fantasyland refurb, maybe they could leave the rest of the park alone in the meantime. Guess not!

I hope the huge walled off area in Liberty Square wasn't the same one that was there last October. Seriously? If that's the case, they're movingpretty slow. Even if they're redoing woodwork etc. 10 months is a long time.

Is that why Disney is offering that insane free dining deal for the next year? Because of the renovations? We're doing FD for the first time in October. I was happy to get it but STUNNED when they announced it as a deal for the entire next year!

I was kind of thinking they might try to have them down for the Christmas parade taping. Was that naive of me?

It seems like there were a bunch of tarps up last September when we were there too!

They won't bother you unless you want them too. My husband did not even notice the buildings had tarps on them. Personally for tarps covering things they look pretty classy. They are painted to look like the building underneath the tarp. Remember the alternative to tarps and wood fences blocking off the construction is to close the parks or sections of the park till they finish a project. I vote for the tarps/fences and all the exciting things they will uncover when finished. MK needs a lot of refurbishing and I am glad to see it happening after all these years. We had quit going to MK pretty much when the kids were into sports and had a 10-12 year span without being there. In 2005 we went back for the first time since the 80s and my first comment was how outdated it was and how it needed a fresh coat of paint on the buildings at least. Glad to see they are doing it.

I personally feel that Disney does a decent job of making the construction area look presentable.

Do you have any pictures of these eye-sores you saw? I was there in December (8 months ago) and did not think it looked that bad.

We were there in Sept and again in April. I didn't think it was all that bad. I would rather deal with the refurbs than have the place become run-down. It didn't stop us from having fun.

It seems like right now they are just doing a general sprucing up of Main Street to make it pop for the Fantasy Land Construction. They did the castle last year, and if you didn't know any better, you wouldn't even know it (except when they drained the moat). For first time visitors, you might would not even think anything of the scrims-it looks better than scaffolding at least, right?

I think Fantasy land is a little different, though with the walls, big piles of dirt, and bulldozers. I think you can even see the work from Dumbo- but the sacrifice is worth it. I can't wait to see what it looks like when it's finished :)

Ok, everyone's making me nervous now... taking the kids for their first trip to WDW and my first visit in years.

Does anyone have pics to share that show just how bad it is (or better, current pics that show this is an overreaction and it's not that bad...)

We were there the last week of July and we only noticed a couple of tarps on Main Street. It was the 1st trip for DH and DD, but 20+ years since I'd last been. It was still magical, and we loved it. I thought they did pretty well with the Fantasyland construction. The wall not terribly obtrusive, however, we did see the construction equipment while riding Dumbo.

The construction gives us a reason to come back in a couple of years. :wizard:
