Mission Space Closing for Refurbishment this Summer

I'll just add that we've discussed this more than one can imagine in the Splash-specific thread. To save you a search and a click, no one has hard answers for the reasoning behind the change. (Good deal of conspiracy theory in the last day or so, if that sort of thing is interesting.)

So why can't we close M:S in the wintertime when it's cold!? (Oh, wait, that *is* the other thread.)

Epcot also has the other countries - most of which have films or a show of some kind, and Mexico has the boat.
Yes, but none of that opens for at least 2 hours after park opening. In the meantime, you are either waiting in long lines or waiting for countries to open.

But still lengthy, almost two full months. From what I understand the ride will see some changes.
Oh, that would be great. It's a favorite ride of ours but I would love to see some new blood added to it
We are there right before it closes so we'll have to make sure we get in several rides on it. I have a feeling, between this, Splash and Pandora we are going to be using the heck out of the Express Bus, hopping here and there. No word of that going away, is there?

Nope, express bus is here to stay as far as I know.

So I was hoping this was happening at the same time as Splash, to lessen the chances of another big ride going down in October...now I'm nervous again....

I don't think you'll see another big ride go down in October. They are spreading these out for a reason.

So relived I don't care about this one!! I am sorry to everyone who is effected and upset by this, though. I know I would be so upset if Splash and this were reversed.

According to this site: http://www.wdwmagic.com/refurbishments.htm

the specific end date is July 31st. Just long enough to close it out for our trip, but it needs an update badly. Here's to hoping they are about a week early.
The various bloggers often do that, stick a date on something when Disney doesn't give one. Disney just says July, so they put July 31, guessing that it will open by then. People rarely complain when something opens earlier than expected, so they are covered

One more less ride to thin the herds during the Summer. Now all they have is SSE, TT, Nemo, JII, Soarin and FEA. This is why MK has some advantages. It has herd thinners. the more attractions you have the more you can spread the crowds. Counting in my head, MK has no less than 25 rides/shows. Add in other attractions, you easily have 30+.
Exactly!!!

They better not be getting rid of my Lt. Dan!
Ten points for anyone who can recall (without looking it up) the name of his character in 'Mission to Mars'. I think it's implied, without being said directly, that this is who we're seeing in the attraction.

Heck, I'll give five points to anyone who even remembers *seeing* 'Mission to Mars'!

Actually false. Disney's internal site says "late July" that means it could open the 31st or even before that.

Hey, I'm just posting a link. :duck: I know it's not official unless it's Disney (and it's not Rivers of Light). :teeth:

But that would be excellent if we got an updated SPACE before we left. The current incarnation leaves much too be desired, and I love space stuff.

I saw "Mission to Mars" but I couldn't tell you a single thing about it. Do they go to Mars? ;) It probably doesn't help that I've watched "Forrest Gump" 4 times in the last 3 weeks, and DH and I sit here and yell "Lieutenant Dan!" every time Gary Sinise is on the screen, and Gary Sinise himself doesn't help matters by having his "Lieutenant Dan Band."

I remember seeing Mission to Mars. I also remember it wasn't very good. The zero-gravity dance scene to Van Halen's Dance the Night Away...man, so bad!

Only Mars movie I remember is the one with Matt Damon although I do recall Tim something or another was in it too (can't think of last name but I can visualize his face). :)
