Mission Space Closing for Refurbishment this Summer

Mission to Mars was a ride in Tomorrowland way back when.

But it was also a movie with Tim Robbins and Gary Sinise. Gary is basically playing his character from that movie in the Mission: SPACE pre-show.

Ten points for anyone who can recall (without looking it up) the name of his character in 'Mission to Mars'. I think it's implied, without being said directly, that this is who we're seeing in the attraction.

Heck, I'll give five points to anyone who even remembers *seeing* 'Mission to Mars'!

5 points for me! I remember sitting in the ride, and as it was going, I was wondering when the ride would REALLY start, and then it was over, and the doors opened.

I was actually thinking of the Gary Sinise movie, but I'll give points for the old attraction as well. (Another two bonus points if you can remember anything about the attraction that preceded *that one*.)

What do I remember about the movie? I think I'm safe in saying ". . . . and then something goes terribly wrong . . . "

Two points here! I remember the name was flight to the moon. That counts as "anything"!

I'm actually bummed that this is going to be closed when we are there. We're going end of June/early July. Not jump off of a bridge or curse Disney bummed but this is actually a ride that my daughters and I look forward to riding together. And it does seem odd that they'd start a refurb of a 'major' attraction in June, no? Oh well, there is always next time. :)

I'm old enough that I vaguely remember "riding" it to the moon. The seats moved and shook a bit. There was something that put us in peril (meteors?) but we arrived back on earth safely. I can't tell you anything else about it, though.

Closes our first day in the parks. Well, darn it. Can't have my "should I or shouldn't I" argument with my son in front of the building. Not sure if that is good or bad :D

GOOD! That ride needs some changes! :)

Like a full replacement? :) ;)

Epcot desperately needs more headline attractions, and IMO Mission Space never panned out to be that. I wish they could re-imagine that area into a new ride.

It was "Flight to the Moon" in DL before it became "Mission to Mars" but I don't know if the WDW version was ever "Flight to the Moon." Wasn't it Mars 2012 or something like that after MtM before it finally disappeared? I rode that in DL, but could be remembering the name wrong.

I was 7 years old, so I could be wrong, but I think that when I rode it in January, 1972 in Walt Disney World it was Flight to the Moon. I remember going back on a later trip (perhaps 1978 or 1979) and noticing that it had changed to Mars. But that was a very long time ago, and I don't always remember details correctly. I'm trying to remember if Mission to Mars was still there for our honeymoon in 1988. I'll have to ask my husband if he remembers.

It was Flight to the Moon at WDW as well as Disneyland. According to Wikipedia, Mission to Mars replaced it at both parks in 1975.

Gosh, what have I started? Nostalgia for various Disneyland/Magic Kingdom attractions has invaded the thread. (Well, that's a message board for you . . . )

My most vivid memory of Flight to the Moon actually comes from the pre-show, when you're in with "Mr. Johnson" in the control room. An alarm goes off and they cut to a video of the runway, where a large, awkward bird is trying to come in for a landing. That was a 1960's version of comic relief.

If I had any points left to give out, I'd offer them to anyone who can describe that one more clearly. (And if you're wondering what all these points are good for, watch this space.)

It was 1981 when I rode MtM at WDW, and 1991 at DL....then I had a very long hiatus and didn't get back to Disney until 2015.

wow it seems like they do want visitors at Avatar Land.

they kind of did this when springs got finished.. all the parks were closing before springs with only ak at night and then after that springs. then they started to close major rides for refurbs.,. looks like crowd control opportunistic renovation to me also...

Ok, now you have me curious. What would cause jump off a bridge, or curse Disney, bummed? :)
