Minky is failing--UPDATE #27 Yeah!

Great news! I hope he continues to improve. So glad he is home with you! :)

:goodvibes I'll be thinking of Minky, and here's a :cool1: for his continued recovery!!

Here we are 48 hours later and $600 poorer :hippie: but I've got my Minky back home. He went back to the vet this morning for another day of IV fluides, meds, and rest. He's keeping all his food down. The vet consulted with another vet since nothing has been clear cut. The consensus is that Minky was very dehydrated and has been suffering with a flare in his arthritis, but nothing more serious(thankfully!) He's still weak in his back end and that is probably permanent. He has severe arthritis in his hips and lower back. So now he's on Tramadol twice a day, in addition to his other meds. But he's happy to be back with us and he just looks so much better.

Thank you all for praying and thinking of Minky. :angel:Y'all are a bunch of DIS angels.

That's fantastic news! Poor baby it's hell getting older, Arthritis, bad hips, bad backs.

probably all the wacky weather that has been going, on my back has been killing me this week to. The tornados came a bit to close on Sunday when you hear the freight train sound you know they are to close for comfort.

hope the new meds work and he keeps his food down and you get to love him a whole lot longer.

I'm so glad I was still up to read this update. I was thinking about y'all and I'm so happy to read some positive news!

I'm very happy to hear Minky is feeling better. :yay: I hope he'll continue to improve and gain his weight back soon.

Thanks, y'all. I really appreciate all the kind thoughts and prayers. Things are sort of okay here. Minky threw up twice during the night and wouldn't eat his breakfast. i sent DH back to the vet for some of their special food and eventually Minky did eat that. He has been subdued all day, but I chalked that up to the approaching thunderstorms. It just seems like Minky has aged so much in a very short period of time. I'm going to really keep my eye on him this weekend. If he throws up again, he'll go back to the vet tomorrow.

Awww if he don't get better your going to gonna have to think about putting him to sleep. I did that to one of my dogs one time, it still hurts to think about it. But I will pray again tonight, sounds like there is still some real reason to hope

Vomiting and loss of appetite is concerning when dealing with liver disease. Regardless, you may still want to call the vet in the morning, just to touch base. Also, check Minky's eyes and gums for any signs of yellowing/jaundice. Try to keep him drinking too, especially with the vomiting. I've dealt with liver problems in my dogs as well. Not stories that need to be shared on this thread -- this is thread of support for sweet Minky and his Mama. Still keeping you both in my prayers. I so understand what you mean about the rapid aging. I also understand about the thunderstorms. One of my Scotties is sitting next to me on the couch all dressed up in her Thundershirt in preparation.

Have you tried any liver support supplements? I used a supplement called Denamarin (basically milk thistle and SAM-e) when one of mine had hepatitis. We saw some dramatic short-term improvements in liver values using this along with her antibiotic. Of course this is something to check with vet about.

Yeah, we're already discussing this. I don't think we're there yet. As long as he's eating and drinking and relatively comfortable, I think we'll keep going. We'll just have to really pay attention to what Minky is telling us. Right now, he's still coming to us for pets and still interested in the occasional healthy snack. But he is definitelly very creaky. Poor pup. It's hell getting old.

Yeah, I've been checking his urine, his eyes, his gums, feeling his abdomen for liver enlargement. He is drinking pretty well. So far, so good. We've been giving him Milk Thistle & SAM-e, plus his liver diet food. It just seemed like he was so robust, if elderly, only 2 weeks ago. And now he's like a sad ghost who doesn't have the energy or interest to bark at a squirrel. He's just very quiet today. But he wags his tail from time to time to let me know he's still with us. If he vomits tonight, I will take him to the vet in the morning.
