Please...somebody help me to understand!

Last year we furnished a new house. The only opinion that DH offered was with regard to the televisions, stereo equipment, etc.
The way our house is built, a big screen tv would not work in the great room. DH insisted on a big screen tv. As a result, I gave up my living room, which became another room containing a television. I wasn't happy about it, but so long as it was surrounded by an attractive entertainment wall I was okay with it. The debate surrounding how big begins.

Our living room is about 15 feet wide. Within that 15 feet, one needs to have a sofa, room to walk behind the sofa, and account for the depth of the television itself. In addition, the larger the screen, the further away you need to sit in order to see properly. After consulting with a variety of salesmen, they suggested a television no larger than 48 inches. Did that satisfy DH? No. He wanted 60 inches. We finally compromised on 53 inches because with the 60 in (by the salesman's calculations) you would have to sit on the staircase to watch tv. Frankly, it looks like we have a drive-in theatre in our living room as it is, but okay.

This year, the tv in the MBR is fading fast. I figured I'd go look for a 32 inch as a replacement. DH now says he wants a plasma screen. The tv sits in an armoire, there is no place to put a plasma screen. I do have him convinced that will not work, thankfully. My question is this...

Why do so many men want the biggest television out there? Heck, it seems to me if you have to sit further away from a larger tv to see it properly, you may as well have the smaller model and sit at a normal distance...wouldn't it look just as big? And also, just because there is a new technology, does that make it instantly attractive? I think the plasma screens seem downright weird.

I don't know what it is about men & big screen TV's either,, but my DH insisted on getting a big screen TV and we have a 53" also. We also have a 35" in our bedroom. DH wants a plasma TV in the future. Right now they are just WAY too expensive.

It's kind of like being a Disney-aholic, if you have to ask, you'll just never understand.

The answers are; that's not the point, and YES!;)

We had the same problem with the first big screen that we bought. We finally settled on a 46". He wanted bigger.

The last one we bought was a 43" widescreen. I was the one who wanted a 60"... at least a 55".

The salesman kept asking my DH if something was wrong that we had reversed roles. I'm still constantly reminding him that it could have been bigger if he'd just have let me win that one. :p

we're MEN! And we want the biggest TV's out there! ;)

Heck, I'm a woman and I'd love to have a big screen tv.:) My SO just would prefer to have surround sound. We have neither.:p

Y'all need to COMPRIMISE. Get both!!

I dunno. My living room is maybe 9' wide and I managed to get a 46" high-definition television screen in there. And I don't have any problem seeing the screen from 7' away. Plasmas were $20,000 when I bought the high-def, now they're down to about $8,000. Hmmmmm.......

Priorities, ladies....priorities. ;)

Okay...guess I'm the one who caved into my DH. We've got a 60"...and I hate it. Takes up too much space in the living room - plus our neighbors mind as well not have a tv because they could watch our just fine (I keep telling my DH to becareful of what he watches - lol!).

My DH is definately an electronics guy! I'm fighting the big screen thing right now because there is nothing wrong with the TV we have & it doesn't need to be replaced. We also don't need an additional TV because we already have 5 (only 5 people too). I think I'm fighting a losing battle and I fully expect that very soon I'll have more TVs than people.
We do have a surround system though & I really don't get it!! I have a really hard time watching movies with the surround sound because the background noise is really loud but the voices are really soft ! Can anyone explain to me why this is supposed to be a good thing?

Think of it this way ladies...
The media room, the garage & the family room belong to us & that's about it, the rest house belongs to you. Do you really think if it was up to your DH he'd have a flower comforter or bowls of potpourri laying around or there would be a certain way to arrange the pillows on the couch?

Electronics is our deal, we like 'em, it's as simple. A big screen TV to us is beautiful. It's like sports or Disney, either you get it or you don't. Frankly I don't understand people who don't want the biggest TV that they can buy, but different strokes I suppose. :smooth:

It's bad in our house. We both love big screen tvs.

We have an enormous widescreen tv (with piano finish no less), state of the art speakers, 100 DVD changer, and DirecTV Tivo (dual feed). We're in AV heaven, but we have no dining room furniture. I guess our priorities are a little whacked, but it works for us.

Disneycub, that's about how far away we are from our 53 inch. Now try to imagine if you had a 60 inch. Okay, I know that you're drooling but us reasonable folks realize it would be like sitting in the front row of the movie theatre.:)

Jeff, there is NO potpourri in my house. I'm not a flowery bedspread type either...but hey, thanks for leaving me the kitchen and the bathrooms!:jester:

My DH likes to get the best of everything. He keeps trying to tell me we need a big screen TV, but we just can't get one. First of all, we'd have to sit in the kitchen to watch it. Secondly, we're about to have a baby, and we've always agreed that our kids would grow up watching extremely little TV. I just don't think we need a huge TV taking up the whole great room if we're going to tell the kids that they shouldn't watch TV. He keeps pointing out that they're getting cheaper, but I think they're still expensive. The other day he pointed out one that was just $1000. I told him we could get 3 or 4 regular TVs for that price.

We have a 53'' one. It was around $3200 (It's one of the high-definition ones). A great purchase, IMHO. It's wonderful to watch TV on such a big screen, but next time I want atleast a 60''.

I am definatly not a man, and I love my bigscreen tv. It is 50" and movies look so great on it and so do football games. Actually the reason I bought it a few years ago is to play my videogames on. I spent tonight playing Kingdom hearts on it and quite a few times I was saying 'wow, this looks So Beautiful... I cant imagine having to go from playing on the big tv to a regular tv again.

DH (and Simba) would be just as happy taking an Al Bundy vacation....sitting on the couch for a week in front of a big screen tv. :teeth:

Notice that he left us the bedrooms and dining room too.

I would love to have a widescreen TV but we don't have a good wall for it...yet. Funny thing is that when we purchased our last TV, DH tried to convince me to get a smaller screen. Uh...no. :)
