Please...somebody help me to understand!
Last year we furnished a new house. The only opinion that DH offered was with regard to the televisions, stereo equipment, etc.
The way our house is built, a big screen tv would not work in the great room. DH insisted on a big screen tv. As a result, I gave up my living room, which became another room containing a television. I wasn't happy about it, but so long as it was surrounded by an attractive entertainment wall I was okay with it. The debate surrounding how big begins.
Our living room is about 15 feet wide. Within that 15 feet, one needs to have a sofa, room to walk behind the sofa, and account for the depth of the television itself. In addition, the larger the screen, the further away you need to sit in order to see properly. After consulting with a variety of salesmen, they suggested a television no larger than 48 inches. Did that satisfy DH? No. He wanted 60 inches. We finally compromised on 53 inches because with the 60 in (by the salesman's calculations) you would have to sit on the staircase to watch tv. Frankly, it looks like we have a drive-in theatre in our living room as it is, but okay.
This year, the tv in the MBR is fading fast. I figured I'd go look for a 32 inch as a replacement. DH now says he wants a plasma screen. The tv sits in an armoire, there is no place to put a plasma screen. I do have him convinced that will not work, thankfully. My question is this...
Why do so many men want the biggest television out there? Heck, it seems to me if you have to sit further away from a larger tv to see it properly, you may as well have the smaller model and sit at a normal distance...wouldn't it look just as big? And also, just because there is a new technology, does that make it instantly attractive? I think the plasma screens seem downright weird.
