May the Fork Be With You - Complete. Symphony in the Sky Galactic Dessert Party

Breakfast at Garden Grill is one of the meals I wanted to try to fit in (breakfast is my favorite meal), but we already have two TS breakfasts planned and neither my husband or sister-in-law is as big a fan of breakfast AT breakfast as I am. (I can eat breakfast foods at any meal and be content, they prefer breakfast for dinner or just later in the day.) Plus a chance to meet Chip and Dale easily? I swoon.

I like your breakfast buddy's style. And the birthday song? Backwards? Short? I am laughing so hard right now!!

Yanno - it is one of the character breakfasts that doesn't always seem to get the love. But I love it and the slowly revolving restaurant and hearing the dog barking and the chicken from Living With the Land and I like that it is family style but if you can't make it work this time, do it on another trip!

Btw since you are doing two breakfasts here is my favorite breakfast hint particularly if it is prepark opening and a buffet - when you place your drink order ask for the check. It's a set price so it is not going to change and that way when you're done and it's getting close to rope drop you're good to go why out waiting on a bill. And yes I leaned that useful tip right here on the DisBoards!

I also love breakfast foods and my family wanted Chef Mickey and I would prefer the breakfast to dinner offerings there so on a extra magic hour at the MK we booked a 10:30 breakfast so got in at rope drop and ran hard then had "brunch" and it was awesome.

Have a great night!

So after breakfast and lots of love I had to take in the land via boat so I could visit the clucking chicken and barking dog at eye level and wandered over to visit Nemo and got stuck right next to the jellyfish for a good 10 minutes. So Soothing! I dropped in on Crush and Figment and love the old school reference to the past and particularly the Computer Who Wore Tennis Shoes because those live action classics were the matinees of my youth.

I decided to tour the World Showcase from the left and would take the IG exit to hop to DHS where I was meeting Jess for late lunch. Around Mexico I was feeling rumbly in my tumbly and like any good Texan who smells Tacos I made a hard right into La Cantina de San Angel -- I had to! There were seats on the waters edge calling my name as were these chicken tacos aka Tacos de Pollo with seasoned rice and refried black beans. This is a serving of three seasoned chicken tacos in soft tortillas with cilantro and tomato and for me some tomatillo salsa and a little spicier Salsa Roja.

Tender and flavorful meat in the tacos and served street taco style - meaning to me, with few toppings but these are flour not corn tortillas. They are decent sized. I enjoyed them and I am a few times a week Tex-Mex consuming Dallasite for what that matters. The side were a little bland but that is what salsa is for.
3496B66C-236B-4227-ACF2-7B9DB428E239_3.jpg

At $12.59 they were a pretty good value and the view was amazing. It was my first time to visit and I really enjoyed it! Fortified with tacos I moved on in the showcase past the Norway construction past China though I looked longingly at Joy of Tea because I really like the Cantaloupy cocktail there but it was just past noon and a little early for me and I promised myself no repeats - thank goodness we are traveling the world and by Italy it wasn't too early anymore! But first a stop in Germany because I could smell the caramel corn! So a few minutes later I was sitting in America on the benches facing the stage in the glorious sunshine and enjoying this glorious milk chocolate caramel with sea salt.

I had never quite understood people who talk about taking snacks back to their room and working on them a few days but it took me four stops over the course of the day to finish this caramel. It's huge. I guess I am used to sharing snacks with the boys. Having them all to myself as decadent joy. I impulse purchased the caramel corn and tucked it in my bag for later - ended up bringing it home to enjoy and reminisce.

And then I was with all good intentions going to stroll to the International Gateway - really I was but I was SOOO thirsty and I know you understand that I shouldn't die of dehydration so clearly I could either drink the bottle of water in my bag or give into the desire to afternoon drink and pick up this beauty -

A Rossini cocktail at the Italy F&G kitchen - it is marinated strawberries topped with prosecco and it was just right in the sunshine - cold and light and the wine brings out the flavor of the berries - I was having a good strawberry day! It was $10 for a flute and as much as I enjoyed it the only drawback was I wanted another and I had already walked away. Not a great value but it was tasty and worth it for me.

So I made my way across the bridge and out the backdoor at Epcot and a boat was waiting for me to take a leisurely ride over to DHS! Perfect timing.

Breakfast at the Garden Grill

To enjoy --

Breakfast was good and hot and plentiful- emphasis on plentiful - with the ubiquitous fluffy Disney scrambled eggs. I don't know why but scrambled eggs just taste better at WDW. I took a nibble of the bacon and it was thick cut and salty and a little too limp for me but the ham was delicious. And maybe I was feeling like a kid again but I was digging into the potatoes. I don't always like Disney homefries as they tend to be oily but these tots were crispy and perfectly salted and yummy! And it is sacrilege but I only ate half a Mickey waffle and only one ear. The chocolate hazelnut ganache is good but not thick so kind of chocolate syrup consistency with a much richer taste but with with sweet rolls and waffles and fruit I was in sweets overload. What this breakfast needed was a non sweet bread - a biscuit maybe.

Just realized that this breakfast no longer includes biscuits and sausage gravy. It used to. Not that there is not enough to eat there but kind of sad it is gone!

Oh my goodness, that Rossini cocktail looks delicious! I may have to try one, or two! :dance3:

It was really a fun one. I think the princesses take some of the love from the GG sometimes but it was a solid fun breakfast for me.

Just realized that this breakfast no longer includes biscuits and sausage gravy. It used to. Not that there is not enough to eat there but kind of sad it is gone!

There really is a ton of food but I could have used a non sugary starch!

Oh my goodness, that Rossini cocktail looks delicious! I may have to try one, or two! :dance3:

It was tasty for sure! If I was going to double daytime drink I think I would be tempted by the Desert Rose in Morroco too. It sounded tempting with pomegranate but not sure sparkling wine is a Moroccan thing - maybe the French Foreign Legion brought it over. Lol

Time to document spoiling my appetite for real food with more sweets and my favorite Hidden Mickey ever!

I am going to blame y'all for this one! I had caramel corn in my bag, some Epcot breakfast and chicken tacos and salted caramel and strawberries soaked in sparkling wine in my tummy and yet I could not stop myself and had to get this. I had to - it was like sirens song or The Force was drawing me in and by some power I could not control I found myself in a tractor beam pulled to the case and then sitting down and killing time before my TSMM FP+ with a carrot cake cookie - is it a cake? Is it a cookie? Is it a whoopie pie full of fluffy cream cheese filling and you were all right. It is pillowy perfection! I was even nice enough to save half of this for Jess who was meeting me at an oddly timed lunch/dinner 4pm hybrid to feed us before we went to the dessert party. He had it for breakfast before our godawful early flight home.

I am still kind of thinking about this one and think I am going to try a copy cat recipe for this one when we go to the lake cabin for Easter - because what is needed more on a candy drenched holiday like Easter than more carrot cake and cream cheese??

So I killed some time and meandered a bit and wandered over to the Star Wars Launch Bay for some Kylo meeting and hugging my favorite wookie - Peter Mayhew lives in North Texas and we have met him at some meet and greets and he is a sweetie so Chewie is dear to me. I also was able to help a kiddo trade w a jawa so that was fun and then as I meandered through the exhibits. In the first room on the left when you enter there are some glass cases. A friendly CM asked if I knew where the Hidden Mickey was in the room. Intrigued I said no and he asked if I had the flashlight app on my phone. Flashlight on we went to the case opposite of the entrance and to the model of the ship on the far right and to the edge of the case. Bending down and with the flashlight shining into the ship's bridge or cockpit or whatever it suits you to call it on the left hand side of the wall is a tiny little poster of Jedi Mickey from Star Tours.

Here is the ship to look for (I am pretty sure like about 99% sure this is the right one but I am sure a CM will help you if I have led you astray - my brain is 50 now as it has been well documented in this review so I blame all errors on that convenient excuse)
CEC31EA4-46D8-442F-9718-412CE2D43AC0.jpg

And here is the teeny tiny poster (and a much nicer poster than Han had on the wall of the Millinium Falcon in Ep 4 wink wink)

8EAFDC55-6DA3-408D-9D6E-40224C4AFACF.jpg

My apologies for the photo quality. It's a dark room with a flashlight app and an iPhone camera working hard. It took us two phones to get the pic - one to shine the light and one to snap the pic.

How fun is that? I had to bring Jess back to see it after dinner and it's the kind of fun little secret that just makes my heart happy!

Next up poorly lit photos from our first visit to the Sci Fi Drive In

Linner at the Sci-Fi Drive In - it's lunch and dinner combo and served at 4pm - I've decided it's a thing so let's roll with it.

Apologies in advance for the terrible pics. It's dark and there are so many reviews of this place that I am sure most of you have seen them and our adventurous orders were pretty much fried appetizers and build your own burgers that look like pretty much all the other pics of burgers and onion rings so off we go!

Jesse packed up the conference booth space and hopped in the rental car and I laughingly knew he arrived when I got the cryptic text message "Mickey Stage 49" which was of course where he parked. I was just sitting down on the Great Movie Ride when it arrived so it was pretty funny to get the "Where are you?" text and to be able to reply "In Oz - let me click my heels together three times and I'll be in front of the theater in a few minutes"

So he arrived hungry and tired and at 3:45 so we headed right over to the Sci Fi and checked in. In all the years we have gone to the parks this was the first time for us and I thought it was delightfully cheesy and fun. We were seated in the third row of a car with a family of four in front of us. It was fine. I had an appreciation for the non conversation inducing seating and told Jess "some brilliant Imagineer realized that at some point vacationing families would just need to get out of the heat, sit down in the dark and enjoy not having to talk to eachother because they are on family time overload. This is the perfect spot for it!" Unfortunately because I had not seen much of Jess I would have fathered talk to him but it was funny and we camped a bit as the cheesy Sci fi flicks aired.

EBA1C3C5-AF49-4407-ADD6-73BAB1B46EC9.jpg

Then we peered into the darkness at these menus -

00D3D78E-1851-483F-B546-27B00AAFF216_1.jpg

I love onions and Jess doesn't and I really wanted onion rings but not a whole order so clearly the healthiest and most reasonable option was to order the sampler. For 19.00 even (feels kind of weird to see even numbers and it not being $18.99 or something but I digress) we had this platter of yummy solid appetizers

692E8669-C5CC-45C1-A938-FE243012DD9D.jpg

The onion rings are big and golden and have a nice spiced batter and I liked the horseradish dipping sauce. The wings are messy and bone in and big. They had some shredded celery on top Jess quickly disposed of and then enjoyed. Thank goodness we had lots of extra napkins because they are super saucy and I would have liked more kick but they were more BBQ and to be fair it said that in the description so I got exactly what I ordered. The pickles were a bit surprising as they were deep friend spears not pickle chips. It wasn't necessarily bad - just different. I tend to favor more of the light tempura small chips and these felt heavy.

Making the same mistake we both ordered our own Build Your Own Angus burger which we should have split. Too much food and this is all my own fault. I opted for traditional French fries and Jess for sweet potato fries.

B9A46FCF-C9AE-4A85-ACB3-F4D7389C2DFF_1.jpg

There is a dark photo of a solid and pretty good burger. Brioche bun was sweet and maybe a little bread heavy for me. Patty was yummy, well seasoned and flavorful. The fries are big planks and I wish they were the pillowy potato perfection of fries we had at Liberty Tree but they were not magic fries this time. Just pretty good ones. The sweet potato fries tasted frozen to me but Jess seemed happy with them. We had a dessert party coming up so we skipped on dessert and any of the famous shakes and ice cream here.

It was good and I am glad we tried it. Just as we were finishing the film loop was starting to repeat so I think it's a pretty finely tuned process to get you in and out in 30-40 minutes. Good respite from the sun but I think we will be back at 50sPTC in the future.

Loving your report so far! I have been wanting to try both the Garden Grill breakfast and Sci Fi.

I wanted to comment and say that I have made a copycat recipe of the carrot cake cookie (I think I found it on a Disney site somewhere?!) using boxed carrot cake mix. They are a little annoying because you know you have to spoon out the batter, and once they're done, find a mate that's around the same size, ice them, etc., BUT THEY ARE DELICIOUS! SO DELICIOUS! You must make them! :)

Thanks for such incredible reviews Dawn! We just got back from our March trip today. Yesterday I dove in the deep end and upgraded my seven day hopper to an annual pass and am doing a 50th birthday solo trip in August! I am getting so many wonderful ideas from you! So thank you very much from one 1966er to another!:)

Love your trip around the world showcase. It says a lot that a Texan thinks the tacos are pretty decent. Gonna have to try those one of these days. So glad you loved the carrot cake cookie. If you figure out how to make it be sure to let me know. Of course that could get dangerous ; )

Ahh, SciFi where you may not be able to see your food but it tastes darn good anyway. The onion rings are my favorite. Think on our next visit we may just skip entree's and indulge in all the yummy apps instead.

And it is with great sadness but fond memories that I start the report of our final dining adventure -

Symphony in the Sky Galactic Dessert Party
We checked in around 7:30 pm for the Dessert Party and received our wristbands with a pull off tab to claim our Chewbacca Stein. The dessert party is held in the area stage left or to the left of Grauman's Chinese Theater when you face it. It is a set up of several stations full of cleverly named menu items beginning with an impressive molecular gastronomy with a wow factor that uses liquijd nitrogen to flash freeze chocolate hazelnut mousse with a dark side and light side sauce choice (dark chocolate sauce or a raspberry sauce), a bar with a selection of four cocktails, an ice cream cart selection including Mickey Bars and Ice Cream Sandwiches, canned soft drinks and bottled waters, punch and lemonade options, a hot beverage station with coffee in decaf and regular, hot tea and cocoa options, a station of a mixed up wonderful bread pudding with assorted toppings, a sweets table of bite sized desserts and a savory station which was a very nice touch. You also receive a Chewbacca Stein ($16 value)

The area is full of about 18 bar height tables with dark red table cloths and an electric candle for ambient lighting. I really do wish there was some seating. For the price of this event, at $69 per person it seems unreasonable to have to stand the whole time or to have to sit on the ground or leave the party area to find a seat.

I asked and I was told it is a fast set up and tear down party and they shut off the area around 4:30 to set up but it felt insulting to pay that much money and not have a seat. I was told they don't bring in chairs or stools to accommodate the fast set up - but from a place built on the inspiration of a man noted for saying "It's kind of fun to do the impossible." I think it should be possible. Let's do the impossible and give the people paying this fee a place to park it! I rarely out and out just complain and try to find the best in things but this really felt unreasonable. If I remember photos correctly the Osborne Lights Dessert Party has seating and I am sure it was a fast set up and tear down too.

Btw you may not have noticed but I really think you should be able to sit down at this party - So now that my whining is done we can move on to the food and atmosphere -- it did look pretty. And the geek in me loved the fun spread and creative names.

The party area had a pretty ambiance. And the safe candles with an electric LED glow cube in it did give it a kind of romantic feel and hubby and we found a table and claimed it right on the edge of the rope and started making the rounds. During the party it was fun to him along w the DHS soundtrack from My Fair Lady and Oklahoma and more.

Only about half these tables were filled so this event may have a pricing issue where people simply are not willing to pay the price point for it, a publicity issue where people don't know about it, or a lack of interest which is a shame because despite my one issue the stations were fun and the CMs were helpful and friendly and the fireworks display was remarkable!
9771F353-C6AE-4610-A660-67D2B55059AE.jpg

The first station upon entry was the chocolate hazelnut mousse truffle that was flash frozen with liquid nitrogen then fractured and served in a bowl with light side or dark side sauce. To be fair I chose the light side and Jess the dark side so we could try both. It was an impressive start with a real cool vibe and Scifi factor. Great for the event. Had I only one wish it would be that instead of a storm trooper on this display that they had Han Solo Frozen in carbonite! How funny would that be?

I think this was more flash than favor tho. It was cool and edgy but it tasted like dipping dots and softened quickly. It was more the technique and wow factor that is the attraction than the actual taste of the dish. It tasted ok - more chocolate than hazelnut and I preferred the raspberry sauce. Dark chocolate was too much for me! It gets an A for presentation and a B+ for taste.

64D8B2A9-9A15-437F-A021-DD1D741E5A65.jpg

Love the table set up so it looks like it's an AT AT carrying the dishes.

This is the savory table which included "Smoked Sea Salted Quarter Ration Biscuits" - a drop biscuit that I really liked. It was warm and soft and I appreciated some savory options. I also really enjoyed the C3PO Cheese Cracker which reminds me of the traditional southern staple at holidays - the cheese straw. It is cheddary and salty and has a tiny pepper kick. It is dry and crumby and I liked it. It is also shaped like C3PO so that is pretty awesome. Other selections included mozarella and tomato sabers, cheddar and olive sabers, fruit sabers of grapes, strawberries, blueberries, and watermelon. I didn't waste stomach space on fruit but had one olive and cheddar and one mozzarella and tomato saber and they were nice but nothing noteworthy except the skewers were super fun and fancy.

We had a split decision on the scorched pesto crisps - I liked the garlicky savory bite and they had a soft favorful middle that I thought was yummy but Jess thought them soggy and bland and said they were not supposed to be soft as it says right in the name, crisp.

The sweets table was loaded with mini desserts including mini versions of the BB8 Droid lemon cupcake and the dark peanut butter chocolate Darth Vader cupcakes. I liked being able to sample these in bite sized options. I thought the BB8 one was a nice tart little bite but didn't care for the candy rocks on top of it. The BB8 edible topper tasted like white chocolate. I liked the dark fudge chocolate Vader cupcake and took a bite of the topper and enjoyed the peanut butter infused chocolate. Pretty darn good.

This was a blue panna cotta with crisp pearls. It was cute and fun but maybe it's because I am allergic to penicillin that is made with mold but I had trouble getting past the pale blue color that I found unappetizing so it was a one bite and done treat for me.

I loved the Pistachio cherry bites below and really liked the tart and bright citrus financier! In fact I had two each of these. I don't really recall the "Death Star Chocolate Cake" There were also crisp rice treat Bon bons that were fine and cute. Rather ordinary so they did not get more than a bite of tummy space.

And my favorite in the display was the Darth Maul eclair! How hilariously fun are these??

They were tasty too.

The star of this Star Wars themed event was this massive and amazing bread pudding!

I seriously could have fallen face first into that hilariously huge dish of salty sweet goodness!

In our family I am the designated drinker and Jess is the designated driver so I did my best but I detest, loathe, despise coconut and cannot imagine why anyone would want to drink something that tastes like sunscreen so I can only review three of these beverages. Perhaps had we both been drinking we would have minded the lack of chairs less.

DC1AD27C-586E-4ECF-9867-B96233C2B093_1.jpg

So let's start with "The Force" I am firmly convinced they created and named this drink so everyone who takes the first sip will shake their head and say "whoa! The Force is strong in this one!" I was shocked by how boozy this was and I read a few other reviews so I know I was not alone In this. If you are looking to recoup the cost of this experience then I would say here is the place to do it! I swear it was half Pomegranate lemonade and half Jim Bean! I managed half of it before I was thinking "I need some scorched pesto crisps in me to balance the sugar and booze!" Here is a pic of the very forceful Force.

It feels really weird to say I found a cocktail that was too strong at WDW. It's like saying "These fabulous shoes have too much of a clearance price. Charge me more. "'or "No, thanks. I would rather not be upgraded to a Savannah suite at AKL. Just drop me off at one of the furthest out rooms at an All Star Resort for the same price." But I swear it was true!
4B65BA9B-3EE9-4B47-BFE7-6A82795502D2.jpg

I cannot find the photo of the Correlion Smugglers Coffee or Juicy Jakku cocktail but they looked like the above cocktail only green or the color of creamy coffee. The Juicy Jakku was vodka and green apple lemonade and was also pretty strong but didn't knock me back like Jim Bean in The Force. The last was a pretty basic iced coffee with Baileys.

For kids and non drinkers we had the Padawan Punch, a blood orange lemonade and the base of the Jakku cocktail, Ewok Juice, the green apple lemonade. I did hear a few kids tell their dad they thought it was silly that it was green and called Ewok juice because Ewoks are not green (though Endor is green). They suggested it be renamed "Yoda Soda" and I thought it was cute.

DE3CE19A-98B4-47DE-85EE-E1782916935C.jpg

We also had the usual generic Disney Ice Cream treats and I love me a Mickey bar and we split one as we watched the fireworks.
57A02172-34FE-42E6-AD5D-4894E459B01B.jpg

And of course the true star of the show is the Symphony in the Sky Fireworks. They're amazing and shot from inside the park so they are close and it feels intimate. I am a humongous Star Wars Nerd so loved it and its artistic and cool and I wish I could have seen it twice. They actually crest Dagobah in fireworks! Seriously cool!

Soooooo.... Would I do this again? Maybe for a special occasion but I think the big perk you're purchasing at a Fireworks dessert parties is a comfortable and uncrowded place to enjoy the fireworks and the desserts are a nice perk to make it a nicer experience. It was nice. I was glad I did it but I won't spend the money on this one again without seating. We all know that Disney is a vacation that bites back and is hard on the feet and takes a LOT of walking so it is a deal breaker for us. It doesn't mean we didn't enjoy it. It just means we will likely spend that money elsewhere in future trips.

And that is it. My first trip report and dining review is done and I hope that somewhere along the way I have given you some info that will help you.

Now it's time to say good bye to all my company -

see you real soon

Thanks Vernie! I found the copy cat recipe on Pinterest and I will give it a go! Even if they are not quite the same its carrot cake and cream cheese frosting so it has to be good!

I like the way you think! I could go for a plate of onion rings right now! And I found a buzzfeed article with Disney World copy cat recipes on Pinterest. We tried the 50s PTC PB&J Shake with great success!

Wait! It's over! Your birthday celebration was too short. You need to plan a long vacation like JABEAD. I really enjoyed your reviews, thanks so much for taking the time to share with us.

Then we peered into the darkness at these menus -

I love onions and Jess doesn't and I really wanted onion rings but not a whole order so clearly the healthiest and most reasonable option was to order the sampler. For 19.00 even (feels kind of weird to see even numbers and it not being $18.99 or something but I digress) we had this platter of yummy solid appetizers

Good respite from the sun but I think we will be back at 50sPTC in the future.
if someone were to... um... feel like having a deep fried meal would that appetizer platter do the trick? it's hard to see what is on it, lol. It's the one thing I haven't seen many pics of.

Wait! It's over! Your birthday celebration was too short. You need to plan a long vacation like JABEAD. I really enjoyed your reviews, thanks so much for taking the time to share with us.

You are so right! I would love to vacay Barb style! This was just a smattering of WDW on a well timed boondoggle trip. But I always have another trip in the planning stages.

It was four very large honey BBQ chicken wings (big - like I kept thinking "this is really a drumstick" big, four deep friend pickle spears which for me was kind of odd but just because it isn't the fried pickle I am familiar with and a pile of about six really big fluffy delicious onion rings. They are served w a blue cheese, spicy ranch and horseradish dipping sauce - all white dressings in little ramekins so remember what is what or get a flavor surprise that might not be to your liking. Personally I like spicy ranch on everything so I was ok with that. Honestly, if I had a chance to do over, while there is nothing wrong w the wings and pickles I would just get the onion rings that were remarkable. The others were solid but nothing too special. I was just trying to be fair and get something my onion hating husband could enjoy too but next time he can order his own appy. It's sure big enough to share for a light meal and has all of the Disney food groups - fried stuff, chicken, pickles and ranch dressing. HTH!

thanks! for the same price i could get the wings and the rings alone and skip the pickles (well $0.50 more which is "same price" in disney dollars lol). Spears don't sound great to me either, too high a proportion of warm pickle to crispy coating.
