Math not adding up on new 4 for 3 deal....

Miffy:

That is exactly what is bothering me! It's like Disney has their own version of math!

When you go in and do room only, and then add in tickets later the numbers come out COMPLETELY different than when you do a package, even though really, the package should not be any different than the sum of the resort room + ticket media, considering that DME is "free" to ALL resort guests, regardless of package booking. Now, if they are trying to tell me that they want $42 for the Planet Hollywood voucher, mini golf voucher, sea raycer voucher, and arcade voucher, that is another thing, but then EVERYONE's packages should just cost more than a room only + ticket media booking by the same amount, right? But they don't.

Now, when they say "there is no tax on this package", what I think they mean is that they are not taxing a "package", per se, but that the price ALREADY includes all applicable taxes. They are not charging tax like they would if you were going to an all-inclusive resort or something, as part of a package deal. WHICH IS WHY IT SHOULD ADD UP TO THE SUM OF THE PARTS OF ROOM + TICKET MEDIA (+ DINING PLAN + AIR + TRIP INSURANCE), SINCE THEY ARE TAXING THE INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS AND NOT THE PACKAGE AS A WHOLE.

It is driving me crazy, and here is why:

A lot of people have posted "oh...you are still saving $X,XXX.XX over the rack rate for the same package, so it's still a savings." Well, that is true, but I am not comparing this trip to a rack rate package.

We also have the Swan booked for the same week, at the AAA discount price. My DH is military, and I can buy us all tickets on base here with military discount (it would save each of us approx. $30 over buying them through Disney...mainly due to no tax on the military park hoppers).

We (my sister and friend who are going with me) all discussed what we would do *if* Disney threw down some really good offer (such as this one) that would make staying in a Disney Deluxe comparable in PRICE to staying at the Swan, since we are going during Peak season, and we were NOT willing to pay $500+ for a room on property. We all agreed that we would ONLY switch to a monorail deluxe (since of the Epcot resorts, we sort of unanimously agreed that we'd just prefer the Swan over the others...better amenities). Among the three monorail deluxes, the Contemporary was our first choice, but it's sold out, so that left Poly and GF. Price wise, the GF was just too out there, so we priced out the Poly and this is where we stand now, with this crazy package offer that is just driving me insane.

The reason that it is driving me insane is because we are actually NOT 100% convinced on staying at the Poly, and it all boils down to $$$, really.

Per person, to stay at the Swan for the week (not including food, but including hotel with tax and resort fees, transfers to and from airport, and park hoppers with military discount) it will cost each of us almost exactly $1,000.

Per person, to stay at the Poly, it will cost $1,080 each. So, $80 more per person for the week. Or, $240 more total.

Here's the kicker. Factor in the $200 giftcard. $240-$200= $40. So, it will cost $40 more to stay at the Polynesian.

Guess how much this discrepancy is? $42.

Without this overcharge, they'd be completely, dead on even. That would make it REALLY easy to go with the Polynesian. Swan? Or Poly?...DUH!!! The fact that this overcharge even exists is making me mad, because *I* really want to stay at the Polynesian, and I sort of convinced the others to stay there, and now they are all excited, but now I feel bad since I discovered this error and it seems like we are paying more than we should. The fact that it seems that Disney is trying to pull one over on me is making me angry, and perhaps out of spite, I have not yet cancelled my Swan reservation. I'm just not sure where to go from here. It's like an ethical dillemma at this point. Should I just shut up and quit whining about it? Or should I just cancel the reservation and stay at the Swan?

Miffy,

Reading your posts made me laugh. In 2007 we did the DVC "tour". I had pretty much decided for it, but needed to convince DH the digs were worth it. The guide, who we told upfront we would not be making a decision until after we got home regardless on any incentives, kept pushing and pushing. At one point she said, "Come on, it's Disney." To which DH replied, "Exactly." She didn't get it. I said Mickey has a CEO, a board of directors and a whole lot of share holders who want profit. Anyone who charges what they do needs to be looked at with great scrutiny. Things never do quite add up in that world as they do on the rest of Earth.

I love Disney. I really do. Just no rose colored Mickey glasses for me.

I have tried to run the numbers in every possible way for our package and the they just never come out correct. What I have finally decided to do is stop adding it all up and just be happy we get a discount. Again, Disney didn't have to offer the deal, but they did and I appreciate that. Maybe some day they will come up with a guide that explains their fuzzy math. Until then ... WE'RE GOING TO DISNEY WORLD WITHOUT OUR KIDS!!! WOOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!

Wow the number crunching is staggering... I sort of agree with huskies90 though DISNEY may be skimming a little or they have their own math but you are saving in the long run.
I have not seen anyone price shop with Dreams Unlimited

Brergnat:

I am having the exact same debate. We are booked at the Dolphin for March break for 9 days on the AAA rate of $201/night. $1800 for the entire stay. Great deal!

We love the amenities at the Swan/Dolphin but I thought I would try a Disney deluxe for a change.

I wouldn't mind paying more to stay at one of the monorail deluxes, but staying at the Poly ends up being almost $1700 more and the Contemporary $2200 more for the same dates. factor in the exchange rate since I'm coming from canada and I am finding it hard to justify spending that much more.

rxs148: Except for the Photopass photo (we booked over the phone, so I'm not sure they didn't include that with an online booking anyway) and the WDTC luggage tag, we got all the exact same extras that you mention. They're listed on my reservation form from Disney. So I don't think DU is giving you anything (except maybe the luggage tag) that doesn't already come with this offer.

Do the Poly and CR prices include admission media? I'm wondering why there's such a large difference in your price quotes. Or maybe the Poly and CR are a lot more expensive than I realized. Are you not interesting in WL or AKL, since they're not on the monorail line? Their prices are significantly lower than the monorail resorts, they're both gorgeous properties, and you'd get DME, so you wouldn't have to pay for airport transfers.

No kidding. I have a lifelong love affair with Mickey. Just not with Mickeymath! :rotfl:

brergnat

First of all, I love your name!

Second of all, I think all your posts alone are worth at least $42, if not $420. Disney owes you! Look at all the endless hours of fascinating reading, thinking, and math you've provided us with.

Thirdly, I think the Poly is worth $14 more per person than the Swan. (Disclaimer: I'm not a Swan-lover.)

Lastly, have you tried talking WDTC down from their $42 overcharge? Or maybe that'd cost $42 in phone calls, not to mention Time Spent in Phone Aggravation, which I charge at about $2.73/minute.

I wonder why all the differences in the totals. When we booked the FD, the total came out to the penny!! Who knows. That involved something free as well so the tax on something free doesn't make sense to me. Hope this is straightened out. Keep us posted especially the posted waiting to hear back today. Thanks!!

1) Rack rate, 4 nights, check-in January 20, 2009, for 2 adults at AKL, savanna view, 1-day base ticket (no hopping), nothing else. Total price: $1534.54.

I'd like to mention something I hadn't noticed before. There's a dagger (the printer's mark, not the weapon!) next to the price. On the bottom of the page, the dagger explains: "The price for this offer does not include vacation insurance. There is no tax on this package." There's no tax? I didn't know that.

2) B4G7 deal, same check-in day, same everything, including admission media. Total price? Drum roll please. Ready? $1534.48! It's 6 cents less than the rack rate! :lmao:

Miffy, Question I haven't seen asked of you, so I apologize if it has been corrected already...

If :
1) is 4 nights at Rack Rate and
2) is the buy 4 get 3 FREE, shouldn't they be identical??

Since the system is down, I get $305 x 4 x 1.125 for tax= $1372.50 Add in 2-1 day base tickets at $79.88 each and you get $1532.26 for 4 nights (ONLY) at Rack rate.

Now, paying for 4 nights RACK and getting 3 free, if you ONLY do the one day base ticket... You SHOULD be paying the same. But they are NOT the same length of stay.

The real difference is between $305 x 7 nights x 1.125= $2401.86 for 7 nights stay and the 4/3 deal at $1372.50 for a savings of $1029.38. (Edited to remind this is not including tickets!)

Again, sorry if this has been addressed, I am reading all the posts, but I see people popping up with theories that have already been covered.

I know this may have been already explained on this thread, and I'm sorry if I'm asking again, but how does this deal work for those that have AP's? We are buying them when we go in December, and we were planning on using them again on our May trip, but I was wondering if it's worth it.

Thanks.

Here is a thread addressing how it can be good for those with APs. Just NOT the right thread title.

4/3 with AP

Right....the price for 4 nights WILL be the same...that is not the promotion. The promotion is pay for 4 nights and get up to 3 additional nights for free (and days 4-7 free on park pass). SOOO you will only benefit if you stay more than 4 nights.

I Haven't heard back from Guest Services regarding this. Wondering if any one else called and heard something?

Are you taking into account that you are paying for the extra days of dining? The dining plan is not included in the promo.

Miffy:

The 7/4 deal includes the tickets, but I just priced a 1 day ticket and backed the cost out for comparison purposes.

Not looking at AKL since it's too remote. I priced out WL on the 7/4 "deal" and that turned out to be about 1K more expensive (give or take 100 bucks).

If the 7/4 deal was REALLY buy 4 get 7 then a basic room at WL would work out to about $214/night or an extra $98 over our price at the Dolphin. But of course, as everyone on this thread and other have pointed out, the rules of math in Disneyworld are different than math in the rest of the world ;)

Bottom line, even using the 7/4 "deal" it's hard to beat the Swan/Dolphin at $201/night.

Thanks antkim. I totally respect those who are getting numbers that don't jive. I agree with brergnat being off by $42 for no reason we can figure out. Others may have legitimate concerns too. However, too often people are simply not comparing the identical components. You have to compare 7 rack to 4 rack for price purposes. At the same resort, same room category. 7 base to 4 base tickets -- or make them both hoppers, etc. The only way to truly compare the rack price (which is the only comparison that is legit based on the 4/3 deal) to the promotion is to ensure you have identical packages. I find that depending on the dates I select, I can open WDW resort site with the standard room they offer or a higher level one EVEN IF the basic room is available. How's that for confusing us... Heaven forbid you EDIT the info to the right. It all goes back to the standard components again. It does get a little confusing and as we all know, trying to keep track of comparing packages can involve 4 or 5 open windows on the computer and a lot of scribbling...

FWIW my savings at the Poly were $1430 over my AAA discount that was already $398. A Total of $1828 for the same dates, hoppers, everything.

Disney CSR just told me reservations system is down for "enhancements".

Any bets on whether they are changing the room rates to correct the math problems with the 7/4 "deal".

McKiggan,

Not sure what you are saying here, but...it isn't buy 4 get 7, you know that, right? It is buy 4, get 3 for a total of 7. Perhaps you were being humorous and I missed a previous post.;)

I also disagree that "the rules of math in Disneyworld are different than math in the rest of the world ;) ". Many of us have posted on this thread that our prices were fine. There have not been too many people who are saying they are being charged MORE for the buy 4 get 3 deal when they have compared properly.

Hi Luvamouse

Sure I knew it was buy 4 get 3 more. I was just trying to shorten get 7 days when you buy 4 (7/4). I should have used the 4/3 term everyone else has used. I was using the average price of 4 nights at rack divided by 7 days.

I have seen that the math worked for some people and not for others. For whatever reason.

I didn't really understand why the numbers came out the way they did when I priced, for example, WL.

As others have pointed out, a discount is a discount. Who cares if the numbers don't add up the way you expect?

My point was that, even with the 4/3 discount, it was difficult to beat the AAA rate at Swan/Dolphin.

Cheers.
