master bedroom’ no longer politically correct

So if you rent a home you have to reminded of it every time you enter the "Owner's Suite" that is isn't yours?
And now my Master Bedroom is really the Banker's Bedroom? Since they are the "Owners" for 26 more years. :lmao:

While the master bedroom thing doesn't bother me one way or the other, I really dislike when sensitivity is made out to be a bad thing. As someone who is very sensitive in many ways, it took me a long time to understand and accept that sensitivity has a great value and it's nothing to be ashamed of.

:thumbsup2 My thoughts, exactly, and that's one of many reasons why we INFJs rock!!!

When peoples sensitivity impedes on others I take issue. Of course we are all sensitive to certain things but when people have to change everyday words or when people can't say Merry Christmas any more then it is out of hand and it needs to stop.

Who said you can't say Merry Christmas and why does it need to stop? Or are you telling us that we should have to say Merry Christmas because that's what you prefer? Just because it bothers you? Awfully self-centered of you to think that...

Personally I do not like it when someone's sensitivity impedes on my desire to wish people Happy Holidays.... That needs to stop....

:thumbsup2

Well I see it as a bad thing. In the real world everyone is not included in everything. We can't expect the world to bend to us. I say Merry Christmas and I don't care who I offend why should I? Now if I celebrated Hanukkah I would say Happy Hanukkah. Again why do we need to bend to everyone else because some feel the need to be overly sensitive?

So your solution is that we all have to be rigid because you want us to be rigid? Do you not see the irony in that?

This is the real world. :confused3 At least it's the real world in which I'm talking about wishing people Happy Holidays. Not talking about WoW or the DIS or the Sims.

I don't think it's being overly sensitive. I don't think it's "bending" to anyone. I just think it's being nice.

I don't understand not caring if you offend someone. I know we're not supposed to talk about religion, but I celebrate Christmas and my faith is all about being kind and compassionate. Not offending people.

Would I come out and call someone a name or say something to personally attack them no BUT I am not going to stop saying things like Merry Christmas or master bedroom for fear it may hurt some ones feeling. I shouldn't have to worry about hurting someones feeling at all times.

No you don't have to say Merry Christmas you can say what ever you want but don't be surprised that people don't always feel the need to have to include everyone.

They reported on this "master bedroom" issue on the Today Show last week. I guess if it made the news, it can be discussed here. ;)

I always thought it meant "biggest" or "main". Sorta like a using master key etc.

I don't know where some people have been the past 15 years but the change was happening even then. And no, contrary to the tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorists, the PC police didn't land black helicopters in the back yard of the model homes and real estate offices and demand a change. Nobody did. It was made and others are still making it because an Owner's Suite sounds better than a Master Bedroom. Same reason we changed Nook to Bay Window and Separate Shower to Garden bath and Den to Family room and Living Room to Great Room.

You say tomato, I say tahmato. :)

Let's just say what we want. Now that the memo is out, I'll know what someone means if they say, "owner's suite". That's good enough for me.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised. I hear people moaning about it all the time.

I've never been told not to say Merry Christmas ever. Happy Holidays on the other hand, I've been chewed out over on multiple occasions. As for Master Bedroom to Owner's suite, not in over 25 years have I ever had anyone complain over either one. Chalk up another first for the Dis!!!!

Stupid. :sad2:

I'll continue to use "master bedroom".

ITA.

And...what happens if I would ever be renting. Would the rental ads indicate it had a "renters suite"?

(Sorry - I just couldn't resist!)

Master Bedroom - a bedroom, slightly larger than the other home's bedrooms

Call me clueless, but I always assumed the name master bedroom denoted the size and position of the room, not the person who occupied it, thus master bedroom and not master's bedroom.

I always thought it meant "biggest" or "main". Sorta like a using master key etc.

Agree with all of the above. I am fifty-eight years old (well, in less than two months;)) and I can honestly say, I have never thought of "master bedroom" meaning anything other than the size of the bedroom.:confused3

We are having a house built by one of the nationally known builders mentioned, and our floor plan lists the biggest bedroom as a "master bedroom". Attached to the bedroom is a "master bathroom" and a large walk-in closet.

...It was made and others are still making it because an Owner's Suite sounds better than a Master Bedroom. Same reason we changed Nook to Bay Window and Separate Shower to Garden bath and Den to Family room and Living Room to Great Room.

I wonder if some of the terms are regional.:confused3 I grew up in New England and nobody had a "great room". We only had "living rooms". Now in Arizona, every "living room" is called a "great room". I still find it awkward to say "great room".

In the house we're having built, we have a room that's called a "teen" room on the floor plans. So, our new house will have a master bedroom and a master bathroom and a teen room. Is that a triple whammy?:rotfl2:

I don't see any indication that anyone's sensitivity was the cause of this. But then I also don't really feel impeded upon by knowing that the Real Estate section of the newspaper might use the word "Owner's suite". More likely someone in marketing decided to use a new word, to see if it would make people slow down and notice "Owner's suite, what's that? Let me click on this link?" and then other people in marketing thought they had to keep up.

I am scratching my head as to why someone would think that "Master" brings up thoughts of slavery, but "Owner" doesn't.

This goes on my list of stuff I do not care about.

Did we read the same article? Where does it say ANYONE was "offended" or "complained" about the term "master bedroom"? It's a marketing/PR stunt. So is stores having their employees say "Happy Holidays". Stores aren't doing that because someone complained, they're doing it to be more inclusive. If people don't like it, don't shop there. :confused3

No one is forcing anyone to do anything.

LOL.

Seriously, as a Black gal, I've got waaaay bigger issues to chase down than what some one calls my bedroom.

Oy vey, stupidity at it's best.

Who said anything about bending. Some people just prefer to say Happy Holidays. Why are some people bent about that?

As a white gal, E, I have bigger issues too. :goodvibes

I sent a link to this article to a friend who is a property manager. Apparently this is been HUD policy for a number of years. The main bedroom is "Bedroom 1".

I guess there are regional differences. I had never heard of an "ensuite" until I started watching "Love it or List It".....which means bathroom attached to the master bedroom.....oops....I mean bedroom 1. They make it seem like a big deal, that's just how most houses are here. Around here, houses that don't have a bathroom attached to the main bedroom are the exception.

:cool1: I see what you did there!!!! LMAO!!!!!

and as a side note to the "happy Holidays" debate about to heat up:
I don't say Happy Holidays to be politically Correct, as much as just to be "all inclusive" of the time of year, to include, Hannuka, Christmas, Kwanza, winter Solstice, NEW YEAR's etc. I am just embracing a notion that maybe at least for a 2-3 week period every year, we can treat each other more humanely, and peacefully wish people, wait for it.... good will and HAPPINESS. When some elitist lunatic screams in my face that "IT'S CHRISTMAS!!!!SAY MERRY CHRISTMAS" with venom and anger dripping off their tongue, I realize that, sadly, Yeah, they totally miss the meaning!!!!
