master bedroom’ no longer politically correct

I am so sick of the pc police. People need to buck up and stop being so sensitive.

Pathetic. People are just scrounging for things to get offended about. Ridiculous. Master bedroom forever for me.

Only read up to these two posts, since I agree with what is said in them. It is getting ridiculous were you have to be so careful what you say for fear of someone being offended. Just nuts!

:lmao: Funny.
:cool1: I see what you did there!!!! LMAO!!!!!

and as a side note to the "happy Holidays" debate about to heat up:
I don't say Happy Holidays to be politically Correct, as much as just to be "all inclusive" of the time of year, to include, Hannuka, Christmas, Kwanza, winter Solstice, NEW YEAR's etc. I am just embracing a notion that maybe at least for a 2-3 week period every year, we can treat each other more humanely, and peacefully wish people, wait for it.... good will and HAPPINESS. When some elitist lunatic screams in my face that "IT'S CHRISTMAS!!!!SAY MERRY CHRISTMAS" with venom and anger dripping off their tongue, I realize that, sadly, Yeah, they totally miss the meaning!!!!

LOL! Ya, I've seen a lot of this going on. They say "Merry Christmas" with attitude. I tend to switch between "Merry Christmas" and "Happy Holidays" quite a bit.

I'm still trying real hard to get offended over what descriptions realtors want to use to sell homes, it's just not coming to me as easily as it is to others. I'll keep trying. :upsidedow

So if you rent a home you have to reminded of it every time you enter the "Owner's Suite" that is isn't yours?
And now my Master Bedroom is really the Banker's Bedroom? Since they are the "Owners" for 26 more years. :lmao:

LOL! For some reason, calling mine the "Mistress' Bedroom" just sounds wrong!:confused3

While the master bedroom thing doesn't bother me one way or the other, I really dislike when sensitivity is made out to be a bad thing. As someone who is very sensitive in many ways, it took me a long time to understand and accept that sensitivity has a great value and it's nothing to be ashamed of.

ITA, and I'm tired of the term "PC." I think a little common-sense decency, civility and consideration are a good thing. There are lots of very offensive words I heard often as a kid that I'm glad to rarely if ever hear any more.

As for the master bedroom thing, I've never really given it much thought before. Now that I have, it seems to me like the term "master" is not used in the sense of owning slaves but is more synonymous with "principal," e.g. master list. And when I looked up the origin of the term "master bedroom," I read that it was coined in the 1920s, not pre-Civil War.

I think this is just a case of real estate agents trying to sell a house by coming up with new/more appealing terms. "Owner's suite" reminds me of "owner's closet" and makes me thins of the largest bedroom in a resort condo. The owner's often have a locked closet they use to store personal belongings they keep in their house; renter's don't have access. Sounds like investment property terminology rather that a phrase that would appeal to me buying a primary residence.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I've definitely noticed this. And truth be told, I find that it's the angry "MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!" folks who make me somewhat leery of saying those words, lest I be mistaken for one of them.

I said Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas interchangeably since I was a kid; why should I stop saying "Happy Holidays" now because some people are offended by it?

Besides, "owner suite" makes me feel as if it is a bed and breakfast or some other residential rental arrangement that is owner/occupied. WHATEVER!!!!:rolleyes1

:thumbsup2 I agree. Or if I'm renting, I'd be picturing the home's owner living in that room. :rotfl2:

Geez Louise, this seems like political correctness run amok. Next up, eliminating the use of the term "family room". What if the homeowner is a single person, and might feel inferior because they don't have a 'family' to use the room? And then, goodbye "Mudroom" we don't want to imply that the room might be dirty. Of course we also want to get rid of the 'foyer', it's not French, afterall.

If you don't have a foyer, where do you put your chestnuts?

Sorry, but I just HAD to do that. :rolleyes2

Back in the dark ages, when I was a kid, I don't remember the term "Master Bedroom" being used at all. The first time I heard it, though, I knew instinctively that it meant the largest bedroom.

And I thought that "Great Room" meant a very large combined living room/dining room/den? So it's just a living room? Gee. I can always learn something on the Dis.
