Mass Shooting at Orlando Club

They are not always the weapon of choice. What about airplanes? On 9/11 they used planes. The Tsarnoves used pressure cookers. Guns are not the problem with terrorists. Terrorists are the problem. For me, it's a whole separate discussion from any kind of other gun related issue, whether it's a domestic dispute involving a gun, an accidental home shooting, russian roulette, anything. Completely separate.

I realize that guns are not the only weapon uses. But they sure are pretty darn easy to access. Again, I do nto knwo the answers, but we willl need to have a discussion about weapons rights, as well as mental health care in this country. I think that we can align these killers with terrorist organizations, but I do think that many of the home grown followers are people who are vulnerable and who are in need of mental health care. We really need to have an open and respectful discussion. This is not going to go away or stop without it.

Sure, you can own it, you just can't protect yourself with it unless the chief of police says you can.

It's a moot point however. The draconian Hawaii carry laws have already been ruled unconstitutional by the federal courts.
I have no idea what you are talking about. The gun lobby throws up their hands and says there is nothing we can do, but we give you examples and you ignore them.

A Mental health is a huge problem, all healthcare, really, but that especially. I agree 100% that something needs to happen there. No one, not even gun owners, believe it or not, want people with mental health issues owning a gun. But even more so, people who have needs should be able to get help, just because they need help!

A I don't agree, respectfully. I agree it's a mindset I can't fathom, but that doesn't make them "mentally ill". There is a whole culture that thinks that way, are they all menatlly ill? No.

A Amen. Unfortunately, people just start screaming and blaming and looking for an easy answer (like gun control) as opposed to a way to stop terrorists.

You're proposing something that has been ruled unconstitutional.

You'll need to propose something that doesn't violate our constitutional rights if you are sincerely looking for solutions.

I believe there is a conversation to be had over guns. Some posters are bringing up some good points/counter points that are educational.

I love the PP that said we should talk to our children, friends, family about tolerance. What are we going to do about the disenfranchised that feel as though their loyalty to a particular group means enough to murder innocents? What are we going to do with a society where everyone is in their own Internet group chat bubble without real life social intervention and lose sight of reality?

In my opinion undiagnosed disenfranchised members of our society, mental illness, borderline personality disorders, and down right loneliness are some of the bigger problems we face today. These are the groups most vulnerable to fringe/extremists whatever the religion/race/etc. Obviously I don't have the answers to these problems. There are no easy answers, but we have to look at the problem to start.

As an LGBT person, I feel it is extremely important to remember that this is a gay club, and these people were targeted because they were gay. The media is going to erase it. Even the title of this thread erased it. But this club was targeted because it is a gay club. Because some gay people dared to be happy. It is Pride weekend here in LA, and I am heartbroken.

Don't know where you live but 1300 miles away not a story faisl to mention the LGBT community. As a a matter of fact they also are focusing on the Gay Pride celebrations taking place nationwide. I would suggest maybe your area has the problem not the general media.

What about Pastor Kevin Swanson? Apparently Christians want gays dead too.

ETA: My point is not to pick on Christians but to show that we, as a people, shouldn't paint Muslims with the broad brush of radicalism. There are radicals in every faith that want someone dead for one reason or another.

Yeah cause my church always holds rallies & recruits for assassins. Just today we were thinking how can we cause mass slaughter - what a ridiculous comparison. Next you're gonna throw out the crusades.

And as dangerous as any terrorist organization when holding a high ranking government position.

Not even close, seeing as most have said idiot & noone has said - Gee he's right let strap a bomb to my chest. Another idiotic argument.

I can not fathom the fact that this guy was looked at by FBI for terrorist links, there may or may not be questions about the father's pedigree, and he STILL got a license to carry?? WTH??? Make it tougher for him, for Pete's sake. The PC stuff has to go bye bye. My Chief of Police can deny my LTC for a whim, I think having the FBI give you the hairy eye ball should be pretty clear grounds for denial.

No he can't. He can try to deny but all you have to do is get a lawyer & make your argument. As long as you can be vetted you will receive LTC. Or join a Rod & Gun club, they will fight for your LTC. Now CWP that is a whole other thing.

Until people realize these people HATE US!! Radical fundamentalist Muslims want all of us dead, they don't care in what order as long as it happens. Today they targeted LGBT, in 2001 they targeted the financial capitalists, they will target all western people until their jihad is ended . Unless we give LE they tools to do more they make a list, well we get what we get.

Making sure mentally ill people don't get guns is not going to solve the problem. You are fooling yourself if you think differently. Canada, for one, has a huge mental health problem yet we don't have a mass shooting every day (another one has been reported in NM today or AZ, I can't remember). It's not a mental health problem, it's a gun problem, plain and simple.

But, but, the constitution says I can have a gun. Fine, go get a musket and shut up.

Reading this thread is a very strong indicator as to why our country is where it is today. I just don't understand how so much hate is contained within a human body...

However, I think for it to work in the USA that realisation had to come a long time ago. The guns and the gun ownership mentality are too widespread now. Maybe if the laws had changed after Columbine things might have been different? Who knows. But I think it is too late for Australia's system to work for you.

And that right there is probably the saddest statement about the U.S. that I've heard on this thread.

The bottom line is: we obviously don't care. Or really, the general population does really care but it has been silenced by lobbyists and big money. I understand the gun "rights" but if those rights are to continue in today's society with the type of weaponry we have, there needs to be much, much more regulation on owning. So much more. But I'm sure the NRA bots will chime in and tell us how this won't work, and that won't work, and so on. Say it enough and people will believe.

Honestly, I'd just like to *try* it for a few years. A huge buyback, very, very tough ownership laws, or just a 5 year hiatus from gun ownership. If it doesn't work, as they all say, then they can be right. But I bet it would change a lot of things and they don't want to see that happen.

I said this earlier and I'll say it again.

If a classroom full of 6 to 7 year olds being gunned down doesn't bring about change, and people are still scared of and defending against gun control, nothing will change. Nothing. The killing of our children is not as important as having our guns.

Wow.

But perhaps it isn't realistic to expect someone from outside our country to respect our constitutional rights.

I'm not American so i haven't studied the constitution so can you please show me the part where it says you get to carry assault rifles? I thought the gun part was for making sure you could overthrow the government if need be. Is that a real concern for you, honestly?

I wonder how may lives were saved by the gun ban in Chicago yesterday?

Oh wait...

Yeah, that's the ticket! Lets ban guns! That will surely fix this problem...

When was the last time you needed your gun to overtake the government?

Oh wait...

ETA- I'll go back to watching because I don't want this thread to devolve and get closed.
