Marvel characters coming to Disney parks?

You do realize that they are talking about the character not the ride. Which its my understanding they can't because US still owns the rights.

US owns outright the Hulk coaster, if WDW bought those rights back they wouldn't get the ride.

Not saying that they wouldn't build a coaster around the Hulk but it wouldn't be that ride.

This goes for all the Marvel based rides at US. Its just that I have read many posts here form people not only expecting all the characters to move but the attractions also.

Yeah, I do realize that the Hulk coaster is not about to move to the Magic Kingdom. That would be a sad, sad thing. But there was a question in the survey we filled that asked if we would like them to implement character meets and greets with characters that are really rare or never seen in the parks. Hulk was in that list. I don't think a character meet and greet with Hulk belongs in MK, much less the roller coaster.

Yes after rereading your post I understand thats what you meant, but sooo many people posted when Disney bought Marvel wondering when they were going to pack up all the rides and where would they be installed in WDW. Some even thought that Disney now owned US.

I guess Disney was polling people trying to gauge how much people wanted Marvel Characters, particularly ones they can't get use. :thumbsup2

Seriously? I'm sure that where there is a will, there is a way... But I can't chase that mental picture of Hulk coaster being packed carnival style to be carried to WDW.:rotfl: I always thought those rides were not on the safe side. I would not be the one on line for the soft opening!

As for the poll. We were chased after by some Disney people when we were in the MK last August. I remember we filled another one in DHS, but I do not remember if we were asked about Marvel on that one. That will be interesting to see what character they pull out of their hat if there is intellectual property involved!

Roller coasters are transplanted from park to park all the time. However, unlike carnival rides they aren't packed up, they're dismantled and moved in individual pieces.

Ah, this is an exciting thread!

I wanted to add a few things that I read a while back (I can't find the links, unfortunately, or I would have added them). From what I understood from the article, Universal still gets the Marvel characters in Orlando, because they're currently there.

However, Disneyland would be free to use them, because Marvel characters were pulled out of Universal Studios Hollywood a few years ago.

The article mentioned a geographic line, in which Disney could use the characters (basically, theme parks on the US West Coast, aka DLR)

This is from what I recall... so I could be mistaken. But from my understanding, it was specially done to avoid the conflict in Florida. I'm not sure what the limitations would be for Disney properties in other countries.

THAT BEING SAID, I would LOVE to see the superheroes on property, but only if they did a better job with the costumes. The ones at IOA just don't look right to me (spandex isn't all that cool looking) They particularly looked out of place next to the high quality of the Harry Potter and other themed uniforms. Though I understand IOA was designing from a comic book stand point, and not a movie one.

It would be awesome to see park costumes more in line with the current Marvel movies coming out. Those seem to do a better job of what the costumes look like in "real life", without all the stretchy tights.

And, as a little boy who was way into superheroes (but not really all that into pirates) it would have MADE MY LIFE. It's also a great alternative for girls like my sister, who thought princesses were too poofy, but loved Jean Grey and Storm :)

I had that already figured out since I would be greatly surprised if the rides were built on the premises.
But you know... I really don't like carnival rides... and I really don't want to ride Hulk.... If it was transplanted to WDW carnival style, that would give me an excuse not to ride it with DH.

Am I the only one that thinks that this is an extraordinarily bad idea? I don't get the edition of Star Wars, The "Great" Movie Ride, Indiana Jones, or the Muppets, and people freaked out over the thought of Avatar (which I personally hate, too) but Marvel characters are OK? Isn't WDW based on Disney characters? Aren't there enough Disney movies and characters to fill out DHS? What about Cars Land? What about the Incredibles? What about more Toy Story stuff? Phineas and Ferb? With Marvel stuff at Universal, what is the point?

I get the money issue, and that Universal is competition, but do Marvel characters really fit? I guess they do at DHS, since that park is totally disjointed in my mind, but what about just sticking to the Disney theme?

Maybe I am a purist, but I can't believe that I am the only one that reads "Marvel at Disney" and thinks, oh no!!

Unlike most of the others you listed, the Marvel "characters" are Disney characters. Except for the pesky little contract with Universal, they would be Disney characters just as much as Mickey and Minnie.

This, to me, is like saying The Beatles songs are Michael Jackson's songs because he owned the rights. Acquiring something and creating something are two different things.

Like I said, I must be a purest, but I prefer Disney to be Disney and not a conglomeration of other movies and ideas. Marvel super heros don't read Disney to me.

I don't agree but I respect your opinion. I however think that anything can be Disney in the right place and if handled correctly. To me, DHS is the right place since it's never been only about Disney characters.

My family would adore this! We liked IoA, but Disney would really do it right. My husband is a comic book geek, my kids love Marvel super heroes and I'm a Joss Whedon addict, so "The Avengers" is my most anticipated movie of the year!

I would love to see Disney (particularly Hollywood Studios, since it would be so perfect there) fit in a superhero theme to draw in boys. Mickey and Pooh are fine for the toddlers, but they don't hold the same appeal the princesses do for the girls - having a primary focus on an underutilized area would be fantastic!

Disney LOVES other movies and ideas. It seems in the 90's every Disney animated movie was a retelling of a public domain story. Beauty and the Beast, Alladin, Little Mermaid. Lion King pretty much ripped off the 60's Japanese show Kimba the White Lion. To me Pixar is the one to inject original ideas into Disney.

To the point at hand, as a full fledge nerd (dozens of cons), I would welcome Marvel at any park. If they choose the right characters for the right settings it would be awesome. Tony Stark in Future World, Captain America in Main Street, Deadpool in Fantasy Land. There are tons of options.

I agree. And Lion King was also Hamlet with animals. Disney has borrowed from others from the beginning, starting with Snow White, so I think it's perfectly normal to expect Marvel characters (which Disney now owns) to appear at some point. Even better if they appear in their own setting (I still hope DHS will get their own Marvel land - that is a park that could really benefit from an expansion!).

Borrowing ideas is one thing. Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Cinderella, Tangled etc. are all take offs of age old fairy tales that Disney has made their own. Obviously Disney borrows ideas. What I am talking about is buying something that already exists on its own and dropping it into a world that is mostly based around all things Disney. If Disney buys Marvel and drops it into DHS, where does this stop??

If the Lion King is Hamlet, then Avatar would be perfect because it's essentially Pocohontas (another borrowed and altered story). Do you folks think that Avatar would work at AKL? I hate to see it, but with your line of thinking, it would be fine. It's Disney glomming onto and promoting another proven money maker.

Agreed. Although Disney now owns rights to Marvel characters, they are not considered by most people to be Disney characters. They are identified as MARVEL characters. I'm a huge comic book fan and would not be opposed to seeing some of them in DHS (perhaps just one attraction vs. an entire "land"). Like someone already mentioned, though, I'm afraid they'd be constrained to only "B-list" characters due to the wording of Universal's contract. I doubt people will be lining up to see Wonder Man and Dazzler.
