Marvel characters coming to Disney parks?

Borrowing ideas is one thing. Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Cinderella, Tangled etc. are all take offs of age old fairy tales that Disney has made their own. Obviously Disney borrows ideas. What I am talking about is buying something that already exists on its own and dropping it into a world that is mostly based around all things Disney. If Disney buys Marvel and drops it into DHS, where does this stop??

If the Lion King is Hamlet, then Avatar would be perfect because it's essentially Pocohontas (another borrowed and altered story). Do you folks think that Avatar would work at AKL? I hate to see it, but with your line of thinking, it would be fine. It's Disney glomming onto and promoting another proven money maker.

Well there is no IF Disney buys Marvel. They already did. And they are not just buying it and letting it sit. There are already plans for Marvel backed Disney comics. And Pixar has already contributed covers to certain comics. Marvel has gained since there would be no Avengers movie without Disney.

Disney doesn't just borrow ideas. They find ideas they don't need to pay for, add a talking teacup and songs and release it. Look up the original stories of some Disney's "classics" and you will see how much they take ideas and put it in the Disneyfy machine. I'd rather see Disney buy properties and use them correctly then steal other ideas **cough*Lion King**cough**.

Avatar would be PERFECT for Disney. When it opens there will be two movies waiting to be released in the coming years. Was it the best movie? No. But it does have a message that can be conveyed easy and has a look thats perfect for a park. I don't see the hate on something that hasn't even started building yet.

Do you not like Pixar at Disney? They were seperate from Disney (owned by Steve Jobs although had a working relationship with disney) and Disney bought them. They own Pixar now. Should they be removed from the Parks? How is Disney buying Marvel any different from Disney buying Pixar? Or the Muppets?

Back to topic, I would love to see Storm in Animal Kingdom. Or Hulk in Downtown. Venom at Halloween. X-Men character lunches, Stark Tower in Futureworld. How about a motion simulator Soarin style through the Savage Lands or Asteroid M. Heck Epcot can be made into one big cerebo.

There is plenty of room for an expansion in DS for pixar, star wars and marvel characters.

Would be fantastic if we had all three expanded in the studios.

Dis_Fan - I know it's not IF they buy. I said if they buy it and drop it in, meaning placing something that once existed outside of Disney into Disney and calling it Disney. Borrowing is obvious - Disney started with fairy tales and fairy tales are not new. I get that. They borrow.

I don't think that Pixar should be removed. The movies represented in the parks were/are always billed as Disney Pixar, they had a working relationship previous to Disney ownership, so they should have a place at Disney.

I can't explain my distaste for the idea of Marvel in the parks. It's a visceral reaction that apparently not many other people share.

I think marvel and DHS would be a perfect fit as long as they don't try to go the universal route with a bunch of coasters. Do a history of marvel ride, maybe one dark coaster (yes i am aware there is already rocking coaster), a restaurant or two, etc. To me it would be a win.

To those debating why this is okay but Avatar isn't to me it is simple, fan base and fitting into Disney.

No, but they'll woo untold numbers of boys.

And Oswald is a dead concept that most people don't know. Unless they start making new cartoons, it doesn't have the marketing power or popularity that Marvel has. And why spend money to make new Oswald stuff on a HOPE that it might become popular when they have a built in money maker right now?

I actually ment the Disney Princesses. I have 4 boys so I am 100% down with Marvel, just not mixed in at the Magic Kingdom. My boys all like the Magic Kingdom :confused3

And speak not about Oswald like that, Mickey will hear you !!! BTW, My son had Oswald mercandise from Disney. The reason they don't have it out? Unknown. Everytime they have released things they have sold out.......

I share your feelings here. Just like putting Avatar in AK, I hate the idea of it. I never saw the movie, so I can't explain it, but I feel the same way about Marvel characters. I have no interest in watching superhero movies and I would rather see them add Disney/Pixar meet and greets and attractions. Just my 2 cents. :goodvibes

Personally, I think Disney needs more manly (and thrilling) attractions and characters like Universal. Pixar has been great, but Pirates, really?

Totally agree with this... my almost 7 year old boy has never been into pirates, and has no desire to dress like one. He has a hard time understanding why there aren't dress up clothes for boys at disney, and if they included superheros, it opens up a whole new world for boys....

Somehow I cant see The Punisher or Ghost Rider walking around MK. As stated before people dont see Marvel characters as a Disney creation. Maybe someday we may see the odd one. Perhaps a Marvel weekend like the SW weekends.

Do people forget that Winnie the Pooh was also a "purchased character" and he is all over WDW?

My thoughts exactly - Disney would not be the park we know and love today if they stuck to strictly Disney characters and rides. Pixar was their smartest decision yet. I guess I don't understand that the addition of the Pixar characters was fine, but the Avengers wouldn't be. They own both, they spent a lot of money on both, and each has a massive fan base.

Look at Star Wars weekend - it's freakishly successful every year and those aren't Disney characters. The Star Tours ride is a huge hit, Rock 'N' Rollercoaster is definitely not Disney themed! Tower of Terror wasn't Disney themed either. If they kept Marvel contained to DHS, it would be a perfect fit and give the park a much needed facelift.

There are many boys (my own included) who don't have the slightest interest in pirates and have outgrown Pooh Bear. The addition of something appealing for boys that age would be a breath of fresh air - and a great idea to expand the smallest park in Disney.

I think the point of contention is that Disney hasn't made Marvel characters their own, the way they have all the pre-existing material they've repurposed. If Disney were to produce an in-house Marvel project I'm sure, with time, people would be more receptive to it in the parks.

That's kind of my point.

It doesn't have to be a "Disney original".

Universal only has a few coasters and only one is Marvel. Marvel Island includes one coaster, one free fall, one spinny ride, an amazing dark ride and some shops.

I've read that Universal has the exclusive use of Marvel characters in every continent where they have a theme park. This would leave Europe out. A second attraction for the 2014 expansion is the Studios at Disneyland Paris Resort has been announced, but we still don't know any detail.
Maybe that will be a Marvel attraction.

There are some good fits especially in Epcot once legalities were out of the way.
Thor at Norway. Nightcrawler at Germany. Iron Man at Innoventions. Capt America at American Adventure.

And at DHS, the Streets of America is great for Spidey, Fantastic Four, Hulk, Daredevil, etc

Maybe it's just because I was never a big comic book / super hero fan, but I'm not crazy about the idea. I have no problem with Disney using aquired characters and themes, but just can't see the Marvel characters as a good fit in any of the parks.
MK is all about classic Disney characters and storytelling. Pixar was a great fit because they were even better than Disney at developing characters, telling a great story, and always including humor.
AK is about animals, so I'm not sure how they would fit here.
World Showcase has a more serious and sophisticated feel and would be a terrible place for comic book characters.
Futureworld might be ok I guess, but if anything, the Marvel characters seem more like 70's and 80's instead of futuristic.
DHS is all about hollywood and the movies. Even though the Marvel characters have all ended up in movies, they make me think of comic books, not movie making.

I could see them in a 5th park, maybe with half the park devoted to superheroes and half the park devoted to villains.

I don't see the issue as can they fit, yes all of the super heroes are of the right nationality, but should they.

Do super heroes belong in a place that's supposed to be one big worlds fair?

But they could fit in DHs because of its movie and TV connection.

So what about Donald in Mexico, Marie in France, etc? To me the difference between a make belive cat and a make believe Norse god is slight. As a matter of fact the Norse god is much closer to the Norway theme than a make believe cat is to France's theme.
Capt America may be a reach for the America land though since he does sort of stick out with the serious theme.

I loved IOA and I love Marvel at IOA..I know Disney owns Marvel, but putting MArvel characters in WDW just seems wrong.
