Mariah Carey

I don't understand why she is still getting such good gigs. Every time I see her on some tv special singing, it is always a song she sang, what, back in the 90's? I admit to not being a fan but has she not had recent hits? If not, why is she still being asked to sing?

She's still selling records. I believe I read she sold 300k records this year even though she hasn't released anything new.

I saw some of the videos and I heard her say "I can't hear." Other than that I don't know what happened.

I am not a fan of hers at all. (She does have some nice songs). Sounds like she is a spoiled brat - having said that and considering all the stories I have heard about her - I thought she handled herself pretty good. I was expecting her to flip out on the stage. I am sure she must have not been nice once she left the stage.
I guess the people around her tolerate her since they work for her - but she really needs to get over herself.

In the very beginning of her performance I thought that there was a sound problem because she said something about not doing a sound check. Whatever was going on it was extremely awkward to see.

Totally off topic, someone else mentioned over acting. What was up with Fergie? She was overly animated, it seemed to me she was trying way too hard.

A lot of acts rely on their past - she'll never be what she was in the 90's but she did have a massive comeback in 2005. Most people want to hear hit songs regardless of how old they are even if she had a current hit (which she doesn't). She was asked to sing because she's still a well known singer but after last night I don't know if she'll do it again. Acts like Mariah don't really need a current song in order to play such events. If she could have gotten away with it - we would of heard "All I want for Christmas" last night but it's out of season. The crowd would have eaten it up.

What I don't understand is why someone with supposedly so much vocal talent why they would even consider lip singing in the first place. Watching her antics though on video she is a Diva with a capital D.

Dang, the ONE year I decide not to watch New Year's Rockin' Eve and something like this happens. I miss all the good stuff!!

Thanks goodness for Google and YouTube!

lol. Mariah is a capital D diva.. I am in the can take or leave her camp. She was a fav back in the day and some of her best music is a part of my life's soundtrack. But...

This wasn't a one off for her, if you google her fumbles there are more then a few on YouTube. She had a similar mis step while performing at the Rock Centre Christmas tree lighting a few years back. There are a handful of videos of the opening night mess ups from her tour in the Far East a couple years ago, a tour she quickly cancelled.

She was there last night because she had something to promote - her upcoming Tour with Lionel Ritchie - hence his appearance as well right after midnight.

She doesn't help her own cause by openly discussing the fact that she doesn't feel the need for rehearsals. And her reaction to last nights debacle - a tweet that simply said "Sh!t Happens, have a happy and healthy New Year" was Miss M at her most delusional best ;) lol.

As a huge Mariah fan, this is exactly what happened and I can give some insight. Mariah usually sings over a backing track (a lot of singers do, google it, it's not out of the ordinary) and the audio is fed through her ear piece and even if there is no backing track, these pieces feed what the audio is so you can hear yourself since it is so loud. Her ear piece wasn't working, so she could not hear herself or the backing track at all. She has sustained some pretty significant vocal damage too from singing basically from her youngest years, so yes, she can't sing like she did in the 90s. She does lip sync, but she can STILL SING. Look it up, she's not 90's anymore, but she's not absolutely terrible. I can't defend the Diva attitude or what happened last night, it was so hard to watch and she really needs to start preparing more, but I just wanted to tell everyone what really happened. She is truly one of the greatest voices we've ever had (there's a reason the Vocal Trinity is known as Whitney, Mariah and Celine). She's struggled in these past couple years, but let's not forget the immaculate voice she had. Have a great New Year every one!

Said the same thing to myself actually

She has a huge following still, 18 #1 hits, people love nostalgia and she gets ratings because people hope there's a train wreck lol

I totally agree that she once had one of the best voices in music. There is no disputing that at all. The thing that gets me is why instead of walking around the stage talking to the audience seconds into her performance and she knew what was wrong did she not stop the entire thing and attempt to get it fixed and start over? I don't understand that. They could have easily panned back to Ryan Seacreast and he could have said she was experiencing technical difficulties. It would have been better than what was about to happen in the next several minutes. Also those poor dancers who kept on going and seemed shocked, but stayed very professional throughout the entire thing.

It feels like the Diva attitude has only been going on for about 7 maybe 8 years now? I feel like the media hyped her up as a diva and she ran with the image and it's just getting worse. Even in her prime I don't recall her being this way. Mariah could have easily had a decent set last night live or not. I much prefer her in concert than on tv singing.

I don't know how anyone does anything live. I took two wrong turns on the way home from Walmart yesterday. No alcohol, no drugs, a place I've been going for over 10 years, just a brain fart. She did not handle it well, but how terribly embarrassing for her!

I think if she wasn't the very last performer before the ball dropped they could've, but with sponsors who are paying MILLIONS to have their commercials seen, stopping the performance probably would have gone too long. I mean it was horrible to watch, I don't know what could have been realistically done to save it.

You're right, the whole diva thing started probably around 2005, went away for a little bit but the past 4 years has been really weird. A lot of people say the Diva thing is a coverup because she's very emotionally unstable with how so many people have taken advantage of her over the years and the lonliness. I think it's a coverup. And I agree, if you watch videos of her in Vegas and her last tour, she really does sound good. But usually on national TV, it's just not right.

I understand all of that, but I assure you they are paying Mariah Carey a lot of money to perform there so even having the issues worked out and than the ball drop and than have her perform would have been a better option than what happened in my opinion.

That's very possible - and you know, her fans eat up that diva image also. It's the image that she's selling. I'm not a huge fan of it but I bet if she suddenly became down to earth she'd be called fake so really, she can't win.

Yes, the Vegas videos do sound good and while I'm not going to see her on this Lionel tour, I will probably keep attending her shows at the Beacon at Christmas time - and whenever she comes around again as a headliner. Such a shame that these events hurt her image but what's done is done.
