Mariah Carey

I understand all of that, but I assure you they are paying Mariah Carey a lot of money to perform there so even having the issues worked out and than the ball drop and than have her perform would have been a better option than what happened in my opinion.

Oh most definitely...for a national tv performance that will be viewed by millions, she needs to prepare more and have every kink worked out and back up plans should have been incorporated. I don't think I really blame her for WHY it happened, what happened during is a different story with how she handled it. But this really falls on her manager and sound engineers. It's really a shame what happened

That's very possible - and you know, her fans eat up that diva image also. It's the image that she's selling. I'm not a huge fan of it but I bet if she suddenly became down to earth she'd be called fake so really, she can't win.

Yes, the Vegas videos do sound good and while I'm not going to see her on this Lionel tour, I will probably keep attending her shows at the Beacon at Christmas time - and whenever she comes around again as a headliner. Such a shame that these events hurt her image but what's done is done.

I'm iffy on the Diva Image, sometimes it's a little much, sometimes it's good. I actually really love her on Mariah's World, she's so much more down to earth. But you're right, the image is now what's selling, not the music..besides her Christmas stuff. I have never been to her concerts, contemplating the Lionel Tour (probably not based on ticket prices), but I would love to see a Beacon Show next year. And you're right, these things have tarnished her legacy, but the only thing she can do is put it behind her, maybe work on improving her voice and then putting out a killer album for the fans.

Yes, a great new album would do her wonders. You should definitely check out her Christmas show if she does it again next year - it's a short show (maybe 90 minutes?) but she blows the roof off the theatre singing her Christmas album material. It's a very festive/fun concert.

You're right, the whole diva thing started probably around 2005, went away for a little bit but the past 4 years has been really weird. A lot of people say the Diva thing is a coverup because she's very emotionally unstable with how so many people have taken advantage of her over the years and the lonliness. I think it's a coverup. And I agree, if you watch videos of her in Vegas and her last tour, she really does sound good. But usually on national TV, it's just not right.

It all started when Vh1 began doing annual TV specials for their Save the Music foundation in the late 90's (98/99 ish) - The specials were an evening focused on the Women who were most successful at that time.
The shows were actually called Diva's.
Mariah was on the very first one along with Gloria Estefan, (who was very good last night on NRE) Shania Twain, Celine Dion and the unstoppable Aretha Franklin.

It was around that time Mariah began to believe her own press in kind of an inflated way...

Every concert she does, I watch footage to act like I'm there and she did sound great in her Beacon Shows, especially in Joy to the World. I was definitely thinking about starting to save up to go!

I don't blame the technical mishaps on her at all, but her antics on the stage I do blame her. At the least she could have stopped all the music, pulled the ear piece out of her ear that apparently wasn't working and either sang A Cappella to one of her really famous songs with the audience or even just Auld Lang Syne. If she would have done something like that she would be being praised right now and not being laughed at by millions of people.

I could see that completely, especially considering by the time of Divas, she was by far the most dominant artist of the 90s. It was no question, then when she fell during Glitter, Emancipation of Mimi relifted her back.

Completely agree, she should've handled it completely different and we not be here talking about it.

I am certainly not one of those people laughing at her at all. When I watch it and it wasn't live when it happened because I was out last evening, I felt horrible for her. As it went on I just kept on saying to myself please just stop. Then I watch the poor dancers who were the most professional on the stage as they kept on going through the entire thing.

My sister had to leave the room because she just couldn't watch it anymore. A lot of people saying she deserved that for her attitude.. I mean, everyone is allowed their opinion, but to watch someone who was the pinnacle of music for a period of time with a golden set of pipes crash and burn in front of the whole country, it was absolutely painful. And obviously because I'm such a huge fan, I felt even worse. I'm glad you and many others looked past the outside and looked at it emotionally. We're all human beings

I think if she wasn't the very last performer before the ball dropped they could've, but with sponsors who are paying MILLIONS to have their commercials seen, stopping the performance probably would have gone too long. I mean it was horrible to watch, I don't know what could have been realistically done to save it.

She could have just sang. It's really pretty simple, singers have been doing it for quite a long time.

It was embarrassing. I'm not a huge fan of Mariah but can appreciate that she has talent.

Obviously she was lip syncing and had unexpected technical issues, but I can't feel bad for her. As an experienced professional, she should've been able to deal with it. You know the old saying how the show must go on. She just gave up and didn't even attempt to sing live. And if the cold bothered her, she should've worn more clothing. :rolleyes2

I agree with the above, except that it should say she "had" talent.

I really was never a fan, but I can't sit here and say she doesn't have a fantastic voice. The same goes for me for the likes of Ariana Grande. I don't particularly like some of the things she has done as a person, but she has a beautiful voice. I remember watching this past Macy's Thanksgiving Parade and legend Tony Bennett was on a float with another musician singing a song and he kept messing up the words and singing when he was suppose to. I felt so bad for him as well as he is a legend.

Doing her own sound check would have gone a long ways toward saving her performance.
