Marathon Weekend 2025

Good afternoon RunDisney All-Stars! Welcome to this week's edition of Sundays are for Disney (SAFD). I know this is the Marathon Weekend thread, but Wine & Dine race weekend is next week and many folks run multiple weekends. Are you running Wine & Dine next weekend? If so, what races and how does having another race weekend like this affect your training plan/strategy for Marathon Weekend?

SAFD: I hadn't planned on running W&D this year, but DW had hernia & bariatric surgery in January and asked if we could plan for her to run the 5k to celebrate how far along she planned to be at this point. As a result, she's registered for the 5k and I'm registered for the 5k and Challenge. This really isn't having any impact on my MW training, though. I ran a 100k two weeks ago and I'm just trying to get my legs back under me at this point. These races are going to be run about as slowly as I can. Once I'm back I'll take stock and start ramping things up for Dopey as my legs allow.

SAFD: W&D 5K + challenge for me. This doesn't really change my training much, it's just practice for back-to-back-to-back races/wakeups (or lack of wakeup, in the case of the 5K, since I'm just changing costumes and taking a short break between MNSSHP and catching the bus to the race--I never sleep well before the 5K anyway)

SAFD: No W&D here. Someday I would like to try for a ‘perfect’ runD season and run them all, but for now with Halloween, kid’s fall sports, life, etc, W&D is the usually the most inconvenient of the races and the hardest to pull off from a schedule perspective.

For those that are running this weekend, have fun!

SAFD: I'm not doing W&D this year as I opted for a local half marathon to run in the middle of training instead, logistically makes things easier to focus on that and just running fast. I also have a business trip the week after the date of W&D and that would have been a lot of travel for me. I am also not planning on doing W&D for the foreseeable future as there are some marathons I would rather run around this time and it just wouldn't work with that :confused3 That being said, if anyone is doing W&D, enjoy it!

I was considering it but wasn’t super interested in the theme, so I skipped in the interest of saving money. Also, I hate training during the summer and would have had to start running earlier to be ready for a half marathon by now. 🤣 I am running the Princess challenge in addition to the marathon.

I’m local, so I might hit up the expo anyway. 🤣

SAFD: No W&D for us. DH and DS27 are running Space Coast Marathon on December 1, and each are approaching it differently. For DH, it’s his A race, and then MW, he’ll run the 10k with me (very slowly since I’m not able to do much running these days), and the marathon as a victory lap. For DS27, his A race is the Manchester (New Hampshire) City Marathon on November 10, then Space Coast will be his victory lap. I’m not running anything until MW, and I’m only doing the 10k. I’m working hard in PT, trying to get my core muscles strong again so I can get back to some sort of running soon. We were considering the Polar Opposite Peachtree. I’m intrigued by it, especially being part of the inaugural race, but I think we’re leaning against it right now.

Oh, you should wear your race costume to MNSSHP, be the last person out of MK, then go wait on the monorail to take you to Epcot for the 5k. That would be legendary!

SAFD: I'm only doing the 5K at W&D, but I'm also doing MNSSHP the night before. I don't think I'm up for going straight from one to the other, but we'll see! If I rally, I'll join you @Naomeri

Sadly the monorail doesn't run for the 5K.

SAFD: yes I am an idiot and running the half at W&D. Mostly because the camping group was planning a Disney Ft Wilderness meet. This was all planned before the knee issue. I will say 10k here and half in January probably would have been a better idea but with Halloween not happening. Of course we are no longer staying at the fort. RV in the shop so had to go to backup plan. Now I will be at Hurricane Hannah meet for W&D and MW.

SAFD: Haven’t run an rD race outside of Marathon Weekend since 2017 Dark Side Challenge (my only ever rD races outside MW). W & D is at a bad time for my job and, even if that weren’t an obstacle, I’m not particularly fond of how it is so close to Halloween. RunDisney seems to have a weird propensity to plan race weekends during periods that don’t really need additional crowds (I’m looking at you first weekend of January Marathon Weekend).

ETA: I know the effective times they can safely run a race weekend are limited by the weather in Orlando. I’m also aware that the existence of non-busy times at WDW is a debatable reality.

This is perfect - thank you!
Good luck in NYC! I ran it in 2016 and it was amazing - although the bridges and hills kicked my butt! (and I train on hills in GA!)
Another rD-er here in north Georgia?
We ought to all get together sometime. For what, exactly. I dunno. Group run? Food? Drinks? Mutual commiseration over running in hills?
Just a thought…
