Marathon Weekend 2025

Oh… many moons ago did a trail marathon. Was stuck on a pack because you couldn’t pass because it was so narrow. The leader kept passing some nasty gases. Brutal and I mean brutal. After a few miles I couldn’t handle anymore. Yelled at him to stop and let us clear. 😂. Careful what you wish for 😂
At one of my recent races, someone was holding a sign that said "smile if you're cropdusting"

Based on posts earlier today about PoT races and race sign-up, I realize that if I want to have a PoT race I'll need to do it in the spring, which is when I'll just be ramping back up to regular runs.
So, I'm not going to overly push things, buuuuut, if I do happen to be far enough along in my rehab, it would be nice to do a 10-miler as a PoT for the 2026 Goofy since they only want a marathon qualifier time.
Now the trick is to find a 10-miler in the Atlanta area or close enough to be practical. So I'm open to any suggestions for something in April or May that isn't too bad of a drive and that I can get into. (Meaning I don't think I'll be even trying for Springtime Surprise.) I see a 10-miler in Cocoa Beach that is a bit tempting, but it would be nice to find something closer.
Any help or suggestions are appreciated, especially for flat or flat-ish races that will be conducive to a good finish time.
And I fully realize this is a nice-to-have and not a need-to-have and if it isn't there or my rehab isn't far enough along, then so be it.
Thank you

I mean… Springtime Surprise 10-Miler is still open for registration… but maybe that’s not your concern with that race.

It is?!! I figured they would all be booked up. Thank you.
Yep! The Challenge is still open as well. Springtime Surprise is usually the one that stays open the longest. I think the heat scares people away, as well as resort prices are higher than other weekends, and maybe it doesn’t line up with spring breaks for others?? But I think it is a pretty fun weekend.

We can set up a group chat or something in the week leading up to the race. Not sure I’m going to make it to HH this time, but I’m 100% down for a dis-marathon-distraction group 😂

@nancipants i can tell you my pattern with the marathon is to run 13-14mm until about AK and then do runner math to decide how slow we can go to the finish (it’s usually about 20min/mi with the buffer at that point.) And then play it by feel and have a good time to the finish.

Definitely, me too! I normally start in the back of B (club rD), stop for lots of photos, do slow intervals and hope @Herding_Cats catches up to me around or just past MK. My guess is it will be sooner than that this year with the course changes.

I will definitely be interested in running with others, though I have no experience with doing that in the past. I think the camaraderie will make the race so much more fun, especially the latter half of the race...

In other news, did y'all see the Cake Shop just had a soft opening at the BW? https://www.disboards.com/threads/d...tion-questions.3344344/page-737#post-65793492 As we'll be staying at the BWV, I'm very excited I can walk (or hobble) down to grab a tasty baked good post-race. Even if it costs an arm and a leg...

Jumping on this as I had the thought today on my way into work. Historically, has there been like a Whatsapp or group chat for training? Also for gathering everyone together on race day?

Anyone running the Tokyo marathon next year? It is less than two months after MW so I am wondering how I should handle training between Goofy and Tokyo...
I’ve had some good luck with marathons fairly close together. In 1 case, I PR’d 26 days after a rough marathon. In another case, I PR’d 10 weeks after a really big PR. In my instances, I put a lot of energy (physical and mental) into the first races and apparently the fitness carried forward nicely for me. Both times, the 2nd race performance was a huge surprise… I had no time aspirations and maybe being relaxed after putting so much effort into the prior marathons allowed me to just run. No clue.

When I had 10 weeks, I did not run for about a week after marathon 1. And then I maybe ran most days but easy. It was 3 weeks from my first race before I did a long run and then in the 4th week I started doing my normal workouts (ramping up) such that I ended up having a few “peak” type weeks before tapering down. My last hard workout is typically 10 days before a race.

This is what has been my experience. A lot is going to depend on whether you are racing either or both. Just make sure you take a little time off after marathon weekend. You will gain fitness from doing all those Goofy miles. With a little rest, you should be able to maintain that and feel good for Tokyo. Good luck there!

I’m doing sort of the reverse: NYC next weekend, then a short break for a vacation, then right into Dopey training. Probably will get some runs in on break to keep my legs fresh but nothing crazy.

Anyway, I’m going to be using this Higdon plan for multiple marathons.

I know that pre-COVID there was a text message group for race day. Someone who has fast would text the group and relay the character stops. It was enormously valuable for us not-so-fast to be able to strategize what is worth stopping for.

I’m in with the turtle slow group to meet up and message! This is my first full. I’m thinking about joining one of the pace groups at least for a bit although in previous halfs I’ve just found the huge groups annoying to run around. :). And I would love to join a text chain that has the characters! Really I’m only planning to stop for one and I’m sure you can guess who that is. :)

Ha…. I did crazy the past couple weekends. Three total marathons in eight days. And still feeling good! I didn’t run any of them at all out.
The first one was the fastest at a ‘fast easy pace’ and I felt really good for most of the race (used 90/30 intervals for 4:24 finish), probably faster than it should have been - my Achilles wasn’t happy the next couple days and into the second race the next weekend. The second race, I felt tired. There were hills and I walked up a lot of them (which was my plan from the beginning), then my Achilles started to hurt around mile 16. It didn’t hurt while walking, so I wasn’t sure if I was going to need to walk the rest of the race or not. I took some medicine, and it started to feel better. It didn’t really hurt - still noticeable, but not painful. I used 90/30 intervals again and finished in about 4:41. The third race (day after the second), my Achilles was tight in the morning. I took some medicine, walked around a lot before the race, and then started. No Achilles pain at all!!! What?!? I used 60/30 intervals for this one. There were a few hills in the first half, but not too bad. I walked up a few of them. But I felt good. Mile 23 and my Achilles was a tiny bit noticeable, but no pain. I finished this one 4 minutes faster than the day before in 4:37! I was so surprised with how I felt on this second marathon in back to back days.
This series of races is why I switched to Galloway in March. I was a little worried with the customized plan, because it actually had me running a lot less than I have the last few years, but my long runs were a lot longer also (which gave me an excuse to run a marathon in a new state for one of those long runs).
Since I have switched to Galloway, I have run easy-ish paced marathons (not hard, but not completely easy either) about 20-30 minutes faster than I had the few months/years previously.

ETA: I should have posted this in the Running Thread and not the MW thread. I didn’t remember which one I was in. I do have two more marathons (one in November and one in December) for my long run weekends before Dopey. Running multiple is doable, but I think your expectations need to be right. Maybe run the first hard, and then go have fun for the second one - and maybe you will surprise yourself!

I'm running Tokyo but I'm only doing the half for MW. I am running London after Tokyo so I'm in a similar-ish situation later that Spring.

My plan is take Tokyo very easy and treat it like an extended long run. Hopefully, this will help me recover within a week or two and get a couple more peak weeks in before taping for London, where I'll run a bit more aggressively.

Cleaning up those World Majors!

Kind of off-topic, but we are working on plans with the in-laws….GotG is still a VQ and $ILL right? Not part of whatever the new paid fast pass system is? Trying to figure out the best way to get on it 2x in 1 day

Actually I think it’s VQ, ILL, AND the new premium pass, that gives you access to everything once.

Tron moved to standby though, and sounds like it’s going well, lines aren’t crazy.
