Marathon Weekend 2023

Partly because I am doing some mindless tasks at work right now and partly to keep my momentum, I have taken to listening to the episodes of Rise and Run (a podcast focused on runDisney events) from this past year's Marathon Weekend. It's helped me quite a bit because I remember my race weekend experiences and keeps me thinking about what I want 2023 to look like. Also, if you have Disney+, the Disney Insider Season 1, Episode 5 has a lot of video from Marathon Weekend (I think 2020?) and it brought back on all of the emotions and "special feelings" for me. There are probably other online resources, but those are what I'm working through right now.

As a follow-up to my earlier post, if you want Marathon Weekend mojo, go to the 1/20 episode of Rise and Run and listen to the last 20 minutes. If you don't have chills, you cannot possibly be a runner.

I actually want to clip pieces of this audio so I can listen to it on my training runs when I'm questioning my life choices in the fall.

UUUGH. I have completely lost my mojo. Guess I have about 4 weeks to see if I can find it again, or I'm going to be sitting out registration day.
Need mojo? Watch a good running movie. My go to is Western Time. Search it on YouTube. It follows Sally McCrae at Western States 100. Honestly, I can’t not run after watching that movie; it is just under 30 minutes.

Hope you find your mojo!

My go-to running mojo movie is Bridget Runs a Marathon. It absolutely inspired me to jump from the marathon to Dopey. SO funny and so sweet! It's streaming on Prime Video.

How have I never heard of this podcast? I'm going to check it out now.

I’ve watched/ran to some of her iFIT race segments (mainly I think some Utah trail race series or maybe it was the Jackson Hole Half…) where she was talking about running Western States. I’ll have to look into this movie! Thanks!

I love this podcast too! I found it first with their interview with Brittany Charboneau, and then I went back and listened to all of the prior episodes.

Rise and Run
I really enjoy this podcast but I must be a podcast snob now because the audio makes it hard for me to listen to… I have to adjust volume depending on who is talking. If anyone has tips for this I would appreciate it!

Are you and your daughters running in Springtime Surprise?
No - we just got back from a WDW school trip last week so another trip just a few weeks after wasn't feasible. Also - I'm sure the SS will be fun, but I miss Star Wars.

This is only my second runDisney event and my daughter's first. Being HUGE Star Wars fans, we both regret not having gotten into running earlier. Hopefully, next year's Springtime Surprise will bring back a Star Wars themed weekend. One can only hope!

I like Star Wars and enjoy watching the movies and a lot that goes with it; however, I’m not one that knows everything about everything to do with Star Wars. But the Star Wars races were so fun!! I hope Springtime Surprise just as fun. I will miss the Star Wars races also.

What platform are you using to listen to it on? I've been using either Amazon Music on my phone or Spotify on my desktop and haven't been experiencing this problem.

Also, check your setting in your app. I know in Amazon Music there is a setting that plays all songs at the same loudness level. That might help as well.

I have the same problem with their podcast and I don't think there is anything you can do about it. The issue is that each of them speak at different volumes and seem to have different settings and whomever is producing it isn't normalizing their levels. The one lady, I think Jack?, is way louder than everyone and needs a noise gate of some kind. When she speaks it is way too loud and you hear the underlying hiss come in very dramatically, at least in the few episodes I've listened to.

The information is good but it is hard to listen to because of the differing levels they all have. In the car I keep turning it up and down and I can't listen in headphone because I'll be deaf.

Thanks for the podcast suggestion. Have started listening and really enjoy it so far. Love listening to people talk RunDisney while I'm out for a run.

I use Spotify and mostly listen in my car because I have a long commute.

Yeah, this is the experience I have as well.

Ok, I missed out on Dopey the past two years due to COVID and life in general but I am determined to register for 2023. Of course I just realize the registration date is April 19. Between a 50th birthday event and a large payment on a honeymoon trip I dont want to spend any more money in April. I have done a bit of research and it seems that with the exception of 2021 (assumed due to lower capacity) Dopey does not sell out quickly. What is the general opinion on waiting 2 weeks to sign up for Dopey?

I wouldn't risk it. If you have a credit card with a later closing date you can use that which will push back the actual payment you owe.

It might be misleading to look at 2019-2022 sell out timing for Dopey. The 2018 Dopey was the last anniversary year (5th) and Marathon (25th). I expect we'll see something similar with Dopey sell out timing for the 10th anniversary (2023). Dopey in 2018 sold out in 2.5 days. Odds are more likely Dopey will sell out before 2 weeks, then the odds that it will still be available.

Historical Race Weekend Sell Out Timing

2022
Dopey/M sold out in 3 months (link)

2021 (Presumed reduced availability)
Dopey sold out in 26 min (link)

2020
Dopey sold out in 7 months (link)

2019
Dopey was essentially open until the end.

2018 - Anniversary Year
Dopey sold out in 2.5 days (link)

2017
Dopey sold out in 4 months (link)

So if you truly want to do Dopey, then be ready to register at opening. Anything other than that leads to a possibility you don't get in.

SAFD: Star Wars. :rotfl: Listen - if I can't have my favorite race weekend anymore, I'm willing to take it in the form of MW! Instead of a Goofy Challenge, we'll have an I Have A Bad Feeling About This challenge. And replace Dopey with It's On Like Alderaan.
What about a new Kessel Run Challenge? Can you finish the Kessel Run in less than 12 hours? Or maybe 14 for us slower folks?

But yes, I want Star Wars races to come back too.

Oh wow, now I want a different sort of runDisney event, one that's based on time, not distance! Like maybe have an overnight race at Epcot, looping World Showcase, and rather than a specific distance, make it an 8 hour challenge, midnight to 8AM. Some of us might run our first ultras that way!
