Marathon Weekend 2023

Good Morning runDisney All-stars, it is time for SAFD:

Today’s question: Who is the best Disney movie villain?
Another vote for Yzma! Love her. Definitely my favorite. As far as best meaning worst villain, gotta go with Scar. I mean, killing off family members and decimating the place you live just to be in power is pretty evil.

I was looking at the course maps for Wine and Dine and I really hope they bring bag running under/by Spaceship Earth for MW. It's disappointing that they took it out of all of the races this year.

Yea the half course for W&D isn't great. I think they get more time in HS though - looks like it goes thru Galaxys Edge? I would sacrifice time in Epcot for more time in HS - what we have had the past few years has been a joke.

Hopefully when they get more of the construction finished the course will go back to run under Spaceship Earth. It’s probably hard to have the race course going that way and also a path for regular park guests.

That’s my guess, but I could be completely wrong! 😁

There was a lot of construction this past January but the half still ran by Spaceship Earth. I'm not sure the current state of walls, so maybe you're right but my assumption was that they didn't want us runners clogging up the path to GotG. I realize it has virtual queue right now so this isn't a perfect hypothesis either.

Runners will be out of there by park open so I doubt it is that. Isn't the Moana's Journey of Water currently under construction in that area? I haven't been in Epcot since marathon weekend but I'd think it is more construction than congestion related.

For W&D? EPCOT early entry is at 8:30, regular opening is 9. The last finishers won't finish til around 9:30, that's a whole hour that the park is open.

Sorry, I was talking about the first loop through, not the second. That first loop is what historically ran either under or right next to Spaceship Earth. The second loop runs down the middle and out the east side like the MW course.

I was referring to the second loop but your point still stands for the w&d 5 &10K routes. It's obviously simpler to keep the same exit for all 3 races but that may be giving them too much credit 🤣

Agreed. I may skip MW with it that early.

For me, the early dates make Dopey impossible since I have to work the 2nd and 3rd (non-negotiable at my job). This isn't a surprise - I kind of knew how the dates were going to fall - but it's still disappointing to have it confirmed.

Right now, I'm playing the waiting game until they announce the Disneyland dates and if there will a Coast to Coast medal. Tentatively, I'm thinking of doing the 10K and half for Marathon Weekend with park time afterwards.

I didn't even pay attention to the MW dates. Yikes. Might as well go for New Years Eve and stay for a full week. Like others have said, will have to see if there is going to be a coast to coast medal. If not, we may just do the Wine & Dine in November since we have never done one before.

I won't be back for MW2024, so you can have my spot! Haha!

I've done several in a row and doing Dopey this year for the first time. I told myself and the kids that we are taking a few years off Disney after this trip. I could have done a month in Europe for the cost of it, I swear.

Since last week's SAFD spurred such a large discussion, I wanted to report back on my sample size of one (i.e. me) for the Galloway/CTP training plan's 20+ mile runs.

This past weekend was supposed to be my first 3 day simulation with 3 mile walk, 7 mile walk, 20 mile run/walk. Well, the 3 miles never happen due to unexpected insanity at work. However, I did get a lot of time on my feet (standing) and practice functioning with minimal sleep so I was going into the runs with tired feet and tired brain. I did my 7 mile walk on Sunday and my 20 miles on Monday. This was the first time that I'd ever done a distance starting with a "2." I felt great throughout and finished strong, even upping my run interval slightly for the last 3 miles because I was ready to be done at that point - and because I could. I felt pretty good Monday evening (all things considered) and was able to do my activities of daily living without problem yesterday.

Tonight - just over 48 hours after a 20-mile long run - I did my speed work faster than prescribed (with coach's blessing) and a mile about 20 seconds faster than what I usually do. And felt absolutely NO soreness or tiredness in my legs from Monday's workout.

I know that everyone has their own feelings about the Galloway plan and I'm just one person, but I am just wowed by the results that I'm seeing. After I finished Sunday's run, I was almost in tears because at that moment I knew that I could have done the last 6.2 miles if I had had to. And we are still over 2 months after from Marathon Weekend.

That's really great! For what it's worth, I'm really happy for you.
