Marathon Weekend 2017!

Question for everyone, so I have had a cold for ~2.5 weeks (I have three young kids who are walking patient zeros) I have been congested had a cough and occasionally am coughing up flem, I hadn't missed any runs until this weekend. I felt feverish yesterday and have not run yet this week. I am going to the doctor on friday. Not looking for a diagnoses here but wondering if anyone had has similar symptoms and how it impacted your training. Should I take it easy, push through it or an in-between?

A couple of years ago, I caught a cold/sinus infection. My doctor - who is a runner - told me to continue to run as it actually helps relieve nasal congestion. He just warned me to take it easier than normal and only run (pace and distance) as my body allowed.

He did advise me to NOT run with a fever. Basically, he said a fever is an indication that your body is using alot of resources fighting something. Running in this case might exasperate the problem.

Me, personally, I would take it easy but push through if I don't have a fever. If I have a fever, I shut it down until body temp is back to normal and then ease my way back into training.

By the way, I did run the 2014 Space Coast with a sinus infections and no sleep. It was a HORRIBLE time (both experience and result) but it can be done!

Best question I had was after completing Goofy a few years back on the anniversary, with the "spinner" Goofy medal. I showered quickly and met back up with my family at Hollywood Studios in time for a Fast Pass on Toy Story. One of the cast members, as we are walking in, looks at my medal and says "Wow, that medal is really cool! Did you get 1st place?" I sooo wanted to say "Yes!"

Actual conversation in the bathroom yesterday between a coworker and I as I was getting changed to go running:
Her: You sure run a lot. Why, are you running a race?
Me: Yes, I'm training for a marathon.
Her: Oh, I've run a marathon before. It was about 3 miles. How far is yours?
Me: 26.2. That's how far a marathon is. :upsidedow
Her: Ohhhh. Do you think you will win?
Me: :rotfl2:

I had people congratulating me on my "marathon" in WDW when I was wearing the Holiday 5K medal. I stopped correcting them after the second or third time and just said "thanks." :rotfl2:

You should take your medal into work after and tell her they gave it to you because you won!

"Yes." The answer is always, "Yes."

16.2 miles tomorrow. My longest to date is 14.8. I'm nervous lol

16 for me on Sunday. That's a first.

I've read if you can do 18, you can do a marathon, so that's encouraging.

Good luck guys! You've got this! :thumbsup2

The necessary distance of a long run is totally dependent on a lot of factors, but I've known some (even some I've helped coach) that max at 14 miles and accomplish a 4:20ish marathon. Just depends on how the training is set up. When I ran my 3:38, I maxed at a 16 mile long run (of course I was running about 50-60 miles per week).

Hey! That sounds like me! In all seriousness, I was nervous heading into race day with 3 x 14 milers as my max runs (3 x 2:30 max time runs in @DopeyBadger training world). I think I would've been nervous regardless of my long run distance, though. When the shoe rubber hit the road on race day, I don't think I could've been any better prepared.

MY LEFT Ankle Hurts!
First you must know I am a ameture. I walk/ran my first race ever last Jan at World Marathon. I am training to do the 10k again in January...I will turn 65 in December.
Two days ago I walked/ran 4 miles. Around mile 2.3 my left ankle starting hurting really bad. I slowed down and walked it out. By mile 3 it was fine. Tonight around 7 pm I got up to walk and same pain came back. I did some walking today grocering shopping and was fine. Could this be a sprain? I don't recall doing anything unusual to my ankle.

Thanks everyone for the responses. Currently standing around in near freezing temps waiting for a 10k to start (trainer had me down for one for training and then I got an email about a local one so I signed up).

Not a sprain - the pain doesn't go away completely with a sprain and then come back. Maybe an irritated nerve or tendon?

I ALWAYS win. I am only competing against myself, so I always come in first if I cross the finish line standing! So far I've been able to do that every time.

10k was awesome even with me freezing my butt off. Ran it in just about 90 minutes which I was shooting for. Not bad for my second run back from surgery.

Side note it's pretty much official after talking to Dad today. Come solo or with parents I will be doing Dopey.

No run for me today, as storm and rain grounds me today :-( Feeling really bad about it, ...

Good morning, runDisney All-Stars! How YOU doin'?

Seven weeks, people. 49 days. Mix in the holidays and this is going to go FAST. I hope everyone's training is going well. From the looks of it, everyone is ramping up their mileage. May your runs be swift and injury-free.

Thanks to everyone who participated in last week's Sundays are for Disney, from @rteetz and his Xmas light collection to @Keels and her game show competition to all of your great careers, hobbies and whatnot, I learned a lot and that's pretty awesome.

This week's question: outside of the race and related activities, what are you most looking forward to about our upcoming trips to WDW? (Yes, you can say DATW, but I better see some creative answers!)

This will be my two-year-old's first trip. More than anything, I am just looking forward to seeing the look on her face as she experiences things for the first time. Seeing the castle. Riding Dumbo. Meeting princesses. Even though the marathon is the reason we are going, I am tailoring the trip to her. I'm trying my best to temper my expectations, but I really can't wait to share Disney with her.

As a "half only" runner I really enjoy spectating the full marathon early Sunday AM just outside the BC between mile 24 and 25 to see the elite runners come through around 7:45 AM and thinking they just ran the full around the same time I did the half! More importantly, cheering on all the other runners knowing how they feel at this point [yes, I did my bucket list full in 2010] and that little push to get them over the walkway heading to IG and Epcot. After that, it's 4 more days of vacation, pool time and afternoons / evenings at Epcot!
