Lysol

There are two different types of Clorox wipes. The ones you buy from the grocery store do not kill Norovirus. The Clorox hydrogen peroxide wipes are hospital grade and need to be purchased online - they kill Norovirus in 3 min. If you have the hydrogen peroxide wipes, you would be much better off cleaning the room with those than with the spray.

Here is an interesting experiment done by a biochemist on how well different household cleaners kill germs:

Thank you for providing this link !! I literally spent hours reading the site as it was absolutely fascinating (there are also articles on it about laundry products, hand sanitizer, and others) and incredibly informative. Our household is changing how we clean things as a result.

Besides wiping the cabin we also wipe down everything as soon as we get on the airplane to the cruise.

LOL!!! We do that on the plane too and I think every thinks we're crazy

I remember all our remote controls in our Dream Stateroom were pretty dirty....

I think we are using the Lysol wrong. We need to add some heat to be more effective on those nasty noroviruses.... I understand now why the aerosol is more effective than the wipes.

Thoughts....
  • consider getting yourself one of those affordable little blacklights. It helps find dirty areas where cleaners may have missed. A spilled drink on the side of furniture or walls is hard to see. The black light quickly finds these problem areas and I can leave a note for the cleaner to spot clean that area. I travel with a blacklight all the time to check hotel rooms before I unpack.

I am not a huge germophobe. I clean tray tables on planes, won't use glass cups in hotel bathrooms, etc. But this? I'd rather be in the dark and happy than checking every single linen/area they bring to my room. Yikes! Blissfully unaware. I've never contracted a major illness while on vacation.

I do too.... until I found surprise sticky spots on the walls and furniture. Today the blacklight just tells me what areas to avoid to avoid an unwanted surprise. I just quietly ask for a quick spot clean when I see the cleaner the next morning.

My experience is similar to the above video.... very minor dirty spots in the room.

On a plane I don't blame you but on the ship they have wipes EVERYWHERE available to you. And yes, cleaning rooms is left to humans under a time clock stress so they can miss somethings. I do travel with wipes and spray but am not crazy with it. I wash my hands and use paper towels in bathrooms etc. Washing hands is the best way not to get sick.

I am thinking of bringing to help w/bathroom odors. Should it go in carry on or checked bag for ship?

Honestly, Disney is the ONLY cruise line to score 100% in cleanliness on ALL of their ships. Not sure about anyone else, but I sure can't beat that track record. In fact when you look at the list of ships, I couldn't find another line with even one ship that scored 100%, although I may have missed it listed.

Now here is another question, if you use a spray, what are you going to wipe it with? Chances are it is going to have more germs on it than anything Disney uses.

Please keep in mind that Disney wants to do EVERYTHING they can to keep the ships clean and to prevent the spread of disease. Why? Because diseases can spread fast onboard a ship and if more than a certain percentage get sick, it has to be reported and a massive cleaning effort has to be undertaken before the next cruise, one that may even cause delays to the next cruise that could cost a lot of money. So, it really is in their best interest to keep the ships clean and they do an incredible job.

You cabin is cleaned AT LEAST twice a day, sometimes more often.

Also, while I understand somewhere like a ship needing to be germophobic, we really have gotten too much so in the U.S., exposure to some germs is a good thing to build up immunity and reduce illnesses. It also turns out us overusing things like antibacterial soap is also helping to creat super strains that are resistant to such things and causes more issues.

We have never bothered. 22 cruises and several trips to WDW and multiple other locations and have never gotten more than a cold. The fact is, if you get sick on vacation, it's not from the room you're staying in. It's from all the other things you touch, doors, elevator buttons, stair railings, serving utensils in buffets, just being around people and breathing air. And, as pp said, the rooms are cleaned regularly, including wiping down of doorknobs and remote controls.

As you can see, Lysol performs very poorly when it come to killing germs and the toxic fumes and residue left behind are very dangerous, especially for children:

Wow, I could spend days down that rabbit hole. Thanks for the links!

Everywhere we travel we bring a can of Lysol with us and spray the entire room upon arrival and several times during the week (past experience with Norovirus). We usually pack it in the checked bags, then have to wait for bags to be delivered to spray the room. We are flying in the night before and wondering if I can take it out of my checked back and carry it onboard on my carry on. Will this be a problem getting the aerosol can through security at the port? I wouldn't think so, but just want to make sure. FYI for those germ a phobes, we also carry travel packs of disinfectant wipes onto the plane and wipe down seats, armrests, pull down trays etc before we sit. We get a lot of strange looks, but have yet to get sick since starting this routine and recently we've seen others doing the same thing.
Your stateroom is not the only place there are germs. I haven't seen it done, but perhaps you can spray down your table in the MDR before dinner, or your seats in the theaters, for starters.

Enjoy your cruise!

From a mother with a daughter who is immune compromised, I will use anything and everything to "help" kill germs. The smallest cold can harm my daughters body, she simply can not fight any bugs even chicken pox.

We have used Lysol wipes and Lysol sprays around the house for 8 years now, and knock on wood she has not had any major infections. And I believe its because we use "Chemicals" to help stop the spread of germs.

When every we fly with her or travel with her I always bring bags of Lysol Wipes and hand sanitizer with us and wipe everything a lot! (never thought of bringing a Lysol spray bottle with us, but will for sure bring one on our upcoming cruise in October!! Thanks!). We even have a face cover for her on the plane like the ones doctors use. No matter how clean the cleaning people clean a room my peace of mind knowing that I took that extra step to prevent any germs from hurting my daughter helps me sleep better. We are big hand washers in my family but that not always helps when you touch something then all of a sudden your eye is itchy and then you just spread the germs from your hands to eye. So if we can wipe down surfaces and spray why not, it's not going to hurt us or put us out of our way its only going to help.

Been thinking of even finding a stronger wipe then Lysol to use, maybe the hospital kind. But after using them for 4 months in a hospital non stop when she was a baby, my hands were pretty raw!!

Were looking forward to my daughters Wish trip and look forward to cleaning the room the first moment we get in then not have to worry about anything else for once (besides other sick people that is but that's a everyday battle for us!)

This one kills Noro in 3 minutes, as well as a host of others. See the photo of the fine print. It lists all the things it kills. It's a non-bleach product.

Well, it says it kills "Norovirus (Feline Calicivirus)" Feline Calicivirus is similar to the norovirus strain, but not actually norovirus.

And, you can't use that product on the skin (according to the usage directions). So only for use on surfaces.

This one kills Noro in 1 minute. Also the Lysol Peroxide Spray does the same.

Oxivir TB Disinfectant Wipes
ir
made by the company Diversey also kill norovirus in 1 minute. These wipes are also based on hydrogen peroxide. I have some of these wipes. They are very nice, sturdy wipes. They seem to be a little sturdier and have a little more of a "scouring" texture than the Clorox Hydrogen Peroxide wipes. They have a mild odor that is exactly the same as the Clorox Hydrogen Peroxide wipes. They don't contain bleach and do not ruin clothing. I really, really like these wipes. So, if you want some cleaning products to keep around for emergencies, restaurants, airplanes, etc., you can't go wrong with either the Oxivir TB or the Clorox Hydrogen Peroxide wipes.

There is a HUGE difference between a child that is immunocompromised and healthy children/adults and they should not even be compared.

I just wash my hands as often as possible before I touch my face or eat, and try not to sweat the other stuff.

Exactly, that is a completely different thing.

FWIW, technically, aerosol cans of Lysol are not allowed in checked bags on U.S. flights. Aerosols of personal hygiene products--hairspray, etc.--are allowed, but anything not designed to be sprayed on a person is not. You may get such sprays through on any given flight and then they would be allowed on board a Disney cruise, but any strategy designed on getting such sprays through on a flight is fundamentally flawed and should not be relied upon.
