You don't know haw many times I've thought about starting a spreadsheet to compare costs between stores - I think its a great idea!
Congrats to Eric on math olympiad! I've heard of it, but I'm not sure if our school participates or not. Jenna is in third grade as well, so maybe we'll hear about it next year. She is in the "gifted" program - but I think it might be different than what Eric is doing. They meet once a week, and they do completely separate work than what is being done in the regular classroom (in other words, it doesn't replace the math and reading, etc that is done in the classroom). Our district also has a program for "exceptionally gifted" kids where the kids actually leave their 'home' school and attend a different location. They are in that program all day every day (except for specials, lunch, and recess). Those kids do work ahead of grade level in some subjects (basically they all work at their own pace). Is that more like what Eric is doing?
I checked out the purse website - I LOVE those fabrics! Have you seen them in stores, or do they only sell online? Very, very cute and bohemian!
Eric's program is a self contained one. In our district there are 2 of them, one for each side of the district. basically what happens is they start testing in 1st grade, the earliest you can start the program is 2nd but you can test in at any time after that for the following year. In first grade they take the top 10% across the district (about 100 kids I think) for additional testing and then of that, the top 2-3% get in. The criteria changes every year so it's not always the same and depends on the mix of kids as to the %'s. In Eric year there were 7 tests they were graded on, they had to make the cut off in 4 out of 7. Eric made it in 3 out of 7 but was super close on 2 of the others so we appealed via a letter saying "hey, take another look" and he got in.
Some people will go through IQ testing and all kinds of things to get their kids in, it's nutty. I'm really glad we appealed, it's been the best thing in the world for him but I wouldn't have taken it to that level.
At any rate, there are 4 elementary schools on our side of the district and kids that test in then all go to the school that the program is housed at. It is self contained for all the main schoolwork but they mainstream for PE and Music (and recess and lunch of course). Not so much for field trips, they do a lot of that on their own. For his grade there is a 2/3 split and a 3/4 split of all hi-cap kids, he's in the 3/4.
Technically they are basically supposed to skip a grade, without skipping a grade, meaning that their grade standards are based on the curriculum for the district, just one grade up. But the reality is that they really work with each kid at their own pace so if they can work at a higher level, they do. Eric just got moved into the higher level math group (which his teammates were already in) so they are basically working at a 5th grade level now.
It's an amazing program and he is one VERY lucky little boy to be in it.
On the bag, honestly no I'd never heard of it. I was poking around ebags and saw it, really liked it, went to their website and decided to give it a shot. I absolutely love it! It is more my style than Vera but kind of the same idea if you know what I mean. I think I just prefer the more bohemian look lol!
It was a pain to start the spreadsheet but now that I've been doing it for 2-3 months I can't imagine doing without it! I just keep a running list during the week and tweak before I run out. It
