How tough is it to manage yearly point consumption.

Say you have 210 points and you use 180 points during your stay, leaving you with 30 points.

Assuming you don't want to "borrow" from next year for another vacation that year, I assume you can bank them for the next year (provided you beat the deadline) to give you 240 points.

The next year you don't vacation and want to bank all of your points. Can you? Or do you lose those 30? I assume you lose the 30?

Any other scenarios to help me understand how to deal with odd number of points and how to consume them would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Once you bank those 30 you have to use them in the next year. So yes..those 30 pts. have to be used or you lose them. You need to go to DISNEY WORLD EVERY YEAR. LOL You could rent them or transfer them to someone too.

We keep a chart so we know how many points have been banked or borrowed from each contract. Then all we have to remember is that the next year, we have to use AT LEAST as many points as were banked. Since we go at least once a year, and often multiple times a year, it isn't a difficult thing to do.

Just be sure that next year, your banked 30 points are used for your reservation first. That way, if you have leftover points again, they will be next year's points and you can bank them into the following year. Most of the MS staff is good at remembering and doing this, but verify just in case.

Sometimes those expiring points can create an unplanned trip to WDW. We had 37 points that were going to expire at the end of January, so DW and I decided to schedule a short trip over MLK weekend to use the points. We were initially going to have our first experience in a 1 BR and at the BCV, however, we just asked some friends to go with us so we cancelled the 1 BR and got a 2 BR at OKW with a BCV 2 BR wait list. The trip is going to cost us more than the original 37 points, but then we have adequate points to use so that was no problem. At least that weekend will give us a little break from life on the frozen tundra!

You'd lose those 30 in your scenario. I keep a spreadsheet that helps me plan vacations and tells me how many points I will bank to the next year. Have only borrowed once. :)

I make sure that MS uses the banked points first. Perhaps they think it's an annoyance that I harp on it, but things can and do go wrong and it's up to us to keep a sharp eye on things.
