KLM code?

How are people's experience with the KLM code? I know it is a code from Dutch airlines or something like that but the fact that you save on all the fees/taxes makes me skeptical to use it only to find out that day that I need to be an employee or something like that. Saved about $100 on my rental and debating. A feedback would be great. Thanks

If you search you'll find lots of threads. I've used it twice. It's been around for at least over a year with no reported issues here. Sign up and print out the membership card and take it along if it makes you feel better.

When you join KLM's frequent flyer program and log in to your account, you can navigate through and find that code right there. I won't use a FF code without having a FF account, so I did just that to check it out. I don't think there should be any worry about if you have to be an employee, etc, because it's there once you become a FF member.

I have used it 3 times after signing up for the FF account. I never had to show a card when checking out at the exit booth. I think I saved about 40-50% on each rental and you get several of the insurances for free.

Does anyone know if anyone who's used this code had an accident and then had problems with either their insurance covering the claim or with the car rental company causing a fuss?

Just trying to clarify if this code being asked about here is for KLM or for Flying Blue members? I already have a Flying Blue account on Air France...which is a partner with KLM. So can I simply use this username / pin or do I need to start a new account specifically with KLM? (I get emails all the time from Flying Blue, not Air France.) We need rental cars for 10 days in Hawaii this August and I sure could use a good discount!!:goodvibes

The discount code is given on the KLM web site so I would assume that you have to sign up for the KLM FF account. There's no downside of signing up with KLM. It's free.

It is a Flying Blue code. I have an actual plastic "pearl sheen" (ivory) card and have never been asked for it.

I was just curious because when I went to the KLM website they called the program Flying Blue and I already have a Flying Blue account.

OK, good, so I should be able to just use my AF Flying Blue account number to log in then, right? THX!

I think it sort of created both, when I signed up for a Flying Blue account. I suddenly can't remember my own password, but I logged in to DH's KLM account with his Flying Blue number and PIN.

OK, so dumb question....where do I find this magical code?!:confused3 I've logged into my Flying Blue account via the KLM website but I can't figure out where to find the code! Any hints or suggestions?

:rotfl: This KLM / Flying Blue code was pretty much worthless. Although I'd LIKE to use National they were coming up about $42 more for a "full size" with the KLM code than what I could find with any of the Costco prices or thru the DiscountHawaii website. Not sure why it's so valuable?! Oh well.:confused3

Rates using the KLM code include all those extra (and normally expensive) insurances and fees that regular rates don't. From my reservation:

(8) Loss damage waiver full Included
(8) Supplemental liability insurance Included
(5) Customer facility charge 2.50/day Included
Airport access fee 10 pct Included
(8) Florida surcharge 2.00/day Included

Sales tax (6.50%) $7.36 Included
Guaranteed Base Rate Included
Unlimited Miles Included

For van rentals last June we save about 40% over everyone else. For cars about $100/week.

I'm not inclined to add on all of those "extras" - they don't impress me....it's like buying the extended warranty on a TV at Best Buy. Not gonna happen for me. What I can't figure out is why sometime the taxes & fees are around $50 and sometimes they are over $100. Not every place spells out what's included in that. Obviously if the base rate is in the same ballpark the taxes should be in the same ballpark...it's the other misc. fees that are a mystery in most cases.

Well, this Flying Blue code gave me squat for August "full size" rentals in Hawaii. Do you think I'm just looking too far out? I have a code that gives a better rate at Thrifty ($272 inclusive vs more like $340 thru Costsco at Budget) but I am not sure how they rate compared to the other agencies. I tried to ask about them on another thread somewhere & I had 1 person post they weren't so good at the HNL airport. But I am tempted to book it for now as a back-up plan, hoping for a better rate at National or Enterprise...:confused3

I wasn't necessarily suggesting you add on those insurances, or find them worthwhile. You had asked why the KLM code "was so valuable", and that was the answer to your question.

In our case, the KLM code is the best possible price for the size of vehicle we want that we have found using every discount I could apply that we qualified for (from those available to the general public, to Visa and Amex codes, to those found in the entertainment book) AND gives us the extra insurance coverage. Win-win in our situation, but perhaps not for all.

This is interesting, Gina. I was unable to see anything regarding insurance benefits, and I was wondering. What are the limits on the insurance (how much coverage), and is it primary or secondary? I'm most interested in the LDW and Liability coverage.

All very good questions..........so I went on a search for more details on National's website. You can go here:

https://www.nationalcar.ca/index.do?action=resRentalInfo.do

If it comes up on a FAQ search page (which I think it should), type "insurance" in the search box, then select "National Coverage Products". That will give you a list of the various insurances. Clicking on each item opens up all the details on the specific coverage.

Here is some of the info, copied and pasted from the links on the National website:

SUPPLEMENTAL LIABILITY INSURANCE (SLI) (Where available): If SLI is selected and paid for, Owner provides Renter or any AAD with third party liability protection in an amount equal to the minimum financial responsibility limits applicable to the Vehicle (the Primary Protection). SLI also provides additional third party liability protection, through an excess liability policy, with limits of the difference between the Primary Protection and a combined single limit of $1 million per accident for bodily injury, death and/or property damage to others arising out of the use or operation of the Owner rental Vehicle by Renter or an AAD, subject to the terms and conditions of the policy. SLI includes UM/UIM coverage for bodily injury and property damage in an amount equal to the minimum financial responsibility limits applicable to the Vehicle (the Primary Protection), and additional coverage, through an excess liability policy, with limits for the difference between the statutory minimum underlying limits and $100,000 per accident (for rentals commencing in New York, UM/UIM limits are $100,000 per person/$300,000 per accident; for rentals commencing in Hawaii, the UM/UIM limits are $1,000,000 combined single limit) or state mandated UM/UIM limit, whichever is greater. OWNER AND RENTER REJECT ANY ADDITIONAL UM/UIM COVERAGE TO THE EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW. SLI, including UM/UIM benefits is provided only when Renter or any AAD are driving the Vehicle. No claim for UM/UIM may be made due to the negligence of the driver of the Vehicle.

SLI COVERAGE IS IN EFFECT ONLY WHILE ANOTHER AAD OR RENTER IS DRIVING THE VEHICLE WITHIN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA; COVERAGE DOES NOT APPLY IN MEXICO. ADDITIONAL POLICY EXCLUSIONS INCLUDE: (A) BODILY INJURY TO RENTER, ANY AAD, OR TO THE BLOOD RELATIVES OR FAMILY OF RENTER OR ANY AAD, IF SUCH RELATIVES OR FAMILY RESIDE IN THE SAME HOUSEHOLD WITH RENTER OR WITH AN AAD; (B) PROPERTY DAMAGE TO THE RENTAL VEHICLE; (C) FINES, PENALTIES, EXEMPLARY OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES; (D) BODILY INJURY OR PROPERTY DAMAGE EXPECTED OR INTENDED FROM THE STANDPOINT OF THE INSURED; AND (E) ANY OBLIGATION FOR WHICH THE INSURED OR THE INSURED'S INSURER MAY BE HELD LIABLE UNDER ANY WORKER'S COMPENSATION, DISABILITY BENEFITS OR UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION LAW OR ANY SIMILAR LAW.

Note: Any UM/UIM benefits paid are included in the $1 million combined single limit SLI coverage and in no way increase the combined single limit amount referenced above. This insurance coverage is underwritten by Ace American Insurance Company. A benefit summary for SLI is contained within the applicable brochure or, for kiosk renters, by pressing the "Product Details" button (for internet rentals, see http://www.nationalcar.com/itemDetails.do?HelpItemID=SLI). Report SLI claims to Owner using the address and phone number set forth herein.

Your own personal auto or umbrella policies or credit card coverage may provide rental car liability coverage; however, National cannot interpret or provide advice with respect to what they may cover. The election of any SLI coverage offered by National might duplicate, void or cause your own policies to become excess coverage. The purchase of optional SLI is not required to rent a Vehicle.

and

Optional Loss Damage Waiver (LDW). LDW IS NOT INSURANCE.

THE PURCHASE OF LDW IS OPTIONAL AND NOT REQUIRED IN ORDER TO RENT A VEHICLE. Renter may purchase optional LDW from Owner for an additional fee. If Renter purchases LDW, Owner agrees, subject to the actions that invalidate LDW listed below, to contractually waive Renter's responsibility for all or part of the cost of damage to, loss or theft of, Vehicle or any part or accessory and related costs regardless of fault or negligence, depending on the LDW plan chosen. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary and unless prohibited by law, LDW DOES NOT PROVIDE PROTECTION FOR LOST KEYS, KEY FOBS, TRANSPONDERS OR OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES. LDW does not apply to damage occurring in Mexico. In most locations, Owner offers the following two (2) levels of LDW protection:
*Loss Damage Waiver- Owner will pay for all loss or damage to the Vehicle.
*Loss Damage Waiver 3000- Owner will pay the first $3,000 of loss or damage. Renter will pay for all loss or damage over $3,000.
When deciding whether or not to purchase LDW, you may wish to check with your insurance representative or credit card company to determine whether, in the event of damage to, or theft of, Vehicle, you have coverage or protection for such damage or theft and the amount of your deductible or out-of-pocket risk.

THE FOLLOWING SHALL INVALIDATE LDW:

A. IF VEHICLE IS DAMAGED WHEN USED OR DRIVEN:

(1) BY ANY PERSON OTHER THAN RENTER OR AAD(S) WITHOUT OWNER'S PRIOR WRITTEN CONSENT; (2) BY ANY PERSON IF THERE IS REASONABLE EVIDENCE THE DRIVER WAS IMPAIRED BY THE USE OF ALCOHOL, NARCOTICS, INTOXICANTS, OR DRUGS, USED WITH OR WITHOUT A PRESCRIPTION; (3) BY ANY PERSON COMMITTING A FELONY OR OTHERWISE ENGAGED IN A CRIMINAL ACT; (4) IN A RACE OR SPEED CONTEST; (5) TO TOW OR PUSH ANYTHING; (6) OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA; (7) UNDER AUTHORITY OF ANY LICENSE THAT IS SUSPENDED, REVOKED, INVALID OR DOES NOT BELONG TO THE DRIVER; (8) TO TRANSPORT PERSONS OR PROPERTY FOR HIRE; (9) IN A WANTON OR RECKLESS MANNER OR IF VEHICLE IS DELIBERATELY DAMAGED; (10) ON AN UNPAVED ROAD OR OFF ROAD; (11) TO TRANSPORT EXPLOSIVES, CHEMICALS, CORROSIVES OR OTHER HAZARDOUS MATERIALS OR POLLUTANTS OF ANY KIND; OR

B. IF RENTER MISREPRESENTS FACTS TO OWNER PERTAINING TO RENTAL, USE, OR OPERATION OF VEHICLE; OR

C. IF VEHICLE'S INTERIOR COMPONENTS ARE STOLEN OR DAMAGED WHEN VEHICLE IS UNLOCKED OR KEYS ARE NOT SECURED; OR

D. IF RENTER FAILS OR REFUSES TO PROVIDE OWNER, POLICE, OR OTHER AUTHORITIES WITH A FULL REPORT OF ANY ACCIDENT OR VANDALISM INVOLVING VEHICLE OR OTHERWISE FAILS TO COOPERATE WITH OWNER, POLICE, OR OTHER AUTHORITIES IN THE INVESTIGATION OF ANY ACCIDENT OR VANDALISM; OR

E. IF VEHICLE IS STOLEN AND RENTER FAILS TO DO ANY OF THE FOLLOWING: (1) RETURN THE ORIGINAL IGNITION KEY AND OWNER'S KEY TAG IDENTIFYING VEHICLE; (2) FILE A POLICE REPORT WITHIN 24 HOURS AFTER DISCOVERING THE THEFT; (3) COOPERATE FULLY WITH OWNER, POLICE AND OTHER AUTHORITIES IN ALL MATTERS CONNECTED WITH THE INVESTIGATION OF THE THEFT.

For Optional LDW on rentals originating in California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada or New York, please refer to the Rental Agreement jacket. ,

Canada
LDW Canadian product is detailed below.

Loss Damage Waiver - LDW (Canada only)

National provides you, the renter and authorized drivers with a way to minimize your responsibility for loss or damage to the rental vehicle through the purchase of Loss Damage Waiver (LDW). LDW is NOT insurance. It is a waiver of National's right to collect from the renter or authorized driver for the loss or damage to the rental vehicle.

The renter or authorized driver is responsible for any loss or damage to the rental vehicle, regardless of who is at fault. In addition, unless prohibited or limited by law, the renter or authorized driver (s) is responsible for administrative and loss of use fees. If elected, LDW waives the renter's and authorized driver(s) responsibility for loss or damage to the rental vehicle up to the full value of the vehicle including administrative and loss of use fees less the applicable deductible, if any.

Deductibles - Cars and Trucks:

Customers 25 yrs + - deductibles are $0, $500 CAD or $1,000 CAD
Customers 21-24 years - deductible is $1,000 CAD (Up to a full size car class category)

Note: Deductible is the maximum amount of customer responsibility for damage to the vehicle assuming the Prohibited Uses and Violations as described in the Terms and Conditions of the rental agreement have not be violated. Deductibles and availability vary by location and by car category.
