I am trying to make the peasant top by dainty designs..and would like to add a ruffles to the top, but I can't find where it tells you what length to make the ruffles. I know the instructions says to cut out two strips for the ruffles. She says in her instructions she is constructing a top in a size 2T, and she cuts out two strips for the ruffles - each 4.25 inches in width and 45 inches in length. How about for a size 5/6? Is there a formula to calculate the length of the ruffles?

It depends on how gathered the ruffle is going to be. I generally make my ruffles with a 2:1 ratio. SO, the way you would calculate that is:

Measure area being connected to the ruffle. Multiply that x2. If the ruffle is being attached before the shirt is put together (which I highly suggest), then you will have one length of ruffle for the front of the shirt, and the second length of the ruffle for the back of the shirt. SO, if the front of the shirt is 20" wide, then you would need a strip of fabric that is 40" BEFORE it is gathered to get a 20" ruffled length of fabric.

I usually make my ruffles twice the length of the garment to which they're stitched but they can be longer or shorter - it depends on how much ruffling you want. So, if the bottom of the peasant top measures 32" around (just an example), I'd make the ruffle 64" long. I'd think the measurements for the 2T would be close enough for your larger size unless the peasant top ends up being a lot wider. It might be slightly less full but I doubt it would be a really noticable difference.

What combination would you make for this time of year? How many of which type, sweats, short sleeve etc etc would you recommend?

I would bring layers so whatever you make, be sure it can fit over long sleeves. I am going next Dec (2008) and I heard the weather ranges from shorts and tees to fleece jackets, mittens and jeans.

those outfits ar sooo cute.

I just did the stupidest thing (or as we call stupid in our house 'silly' )I am making Georgia a fleece sweater from the scraps from our ariel fleece. Well I picked up the hood piece instead of the actual sleeve piece, sewed them together got one sleeve on, and went to have G try it on before the other sleeve went on, and it was short. I thought that is NOT possible! I measured three times. well I didnt measure wrong, just grabbed the wrong pieces! Ugh... so I Just had to seam rip the sleeves. grrrrrrrrrr I would have been done by now.

OMG - I'm just SO excited!! I headed over to Tampa to go visit Hancock's, since they had all of their licensed fabric on sale 50% off. And, along with some of the other fabrics already shown, I am THRILLED to find 2 different Little Einsteins fabrics. They are just TOO, TOO cute!! I don't know what I'm going to do with them, but I bought 5 yds of each of them!! I'll have to take a picture and show you guys!

Thank you! That makes perfect sense...I can't wait to put the new ruffler foot that I bought to use. Hope I can get it figured out...I have the free ruffler foot ebook from YCMT, so hopefully that will help because the instruction that came with the foot doesn't look very helpful.

I'm behind on posts again. Ugh I hate that. 50 pages since I last logged on.

A lot of people asked about my fairies for the jeans. I used bedsheets. That was the only place I found fairies in the size I wanted. They are quite large.

The top was made 100% by me. The back is completely shirred.

Now I'm off to read.

Lisa!!! I found it its www.fashionablefabrics.com Their MM prints are like 7.15-7.50 a yd.(for the most part) COOL. I remembered that when I was looking for it I was looking for the MM "forest" print and stumbled across them. so I went back and searched for Michael Miller christmas fabric and went through 13 pages till I saw the link Sometimes I wonder how I ended up w/ a kid w/ an IQ of 135.

So I spent my weekend out fabric shopping instead of sewing... Check out these great new prints that I found. The colorful Mickey head, Turquoise Mickey, and Red drawn Mickey and Minne are all from Hancocks. The rest of the fabrics were from JoAnn. My JoAnn just got a bunch of new stuff in, some really cute Tinkerbell prints(I think three) and a new Pooh that I can remember. I only had one coupon, so I picked up the great new vintagey Mickey. I am going back today though to pick up something else!!! Ok my pics are done loading so here you go....

I debated on getting some of the turquoise mickey head and the black/red mickey head when I saw them at Hancock's and JoAnns. I had already picked out too much tigger and Disney Christmas so I decided not to get them, but I might have to go back - they are cute. I haven't seen most of the others. I'll have to keep my eye out - esp. that colorful mickey - I love it!

Good news. I had my interview today at the blood bank and they offered me a position. It starts a dollar an hour less than I make now, but I'm also not getting any hours now so it will be better than nothing. There are lots of chances for pay raises though. If I want to get my CDL license they will pay for my classes and testing...so, totally psyched about becoming an official "truck driver" But at the same time a little nervous about driving one of those big blood mobile trucks.
Of course I won't start training till after backround and reference checks etc. Probably around Dec.3rd. too far away. but what are ya gonna do?
This job is really kinda perfect for me, I hope that they will be able to work with my school schedule next semester.

BTW...the nemo mickey head applique is just great!! I never thought of outlining the head and ears seperately but DH and I really like the way it turned out!

Congrats on the job!! I used to have my CDL... in college I drove busses for the school. Unlike with my regular driver's license test, the parallel parking part of the commercial test was a breeze - go figure!!

I know, I know, another serger question. I read on this thread (where else would I be?) about the Singer serger from WalMart for about $192.00 and the Brother serger from WalMart.com for about $232.00. From what I remember, both were good for the money. Since they are so close in price, which is the better one? I'm hoping to get one for Christmas and want to spend my money wisely.

I love that black fabric. it adds more dimension than just a plain oldblack fabric I think!

I am OFFICIALLY excited now! We leave for our Thanksgiving trip (Actually our very first trip to DW as a family!) in 8 days and the outfits are complete! These outfits are my pride and joy these days as I have never appliqued or any of this before! (I made the Epcot and turkey ones - other one is from that auction place) I was so excited that I took my dd to have her pictures in them before they get "messed up"! What do you think? I was really excited about the "pilgrim-y" look of the apron dress turkey since we'll be eating Thanksgiving dinner at the Fort!
