Kids Disney Boutique / Customs Clothes Part 2

Hi,
This isn't Disney related, but I was inspired by this thread. It is my first attempt at an applique. I ended up having to hand-sew all the edges. I accidentally bought upholstery thread. Do not attempt to do a satin stitch with heavy thread. My machine ate the material and ground to a stop. Took me thirty minutes with a seam ripper and a pair of tweezers to clean it out.

My DS loves Caillou, but I haven't been able to find any merchandise in this area. I figured his big, round head was a simple place to start.

Really cute! I should try some Little Einsteins. Not a whole lot of merchandise either.

Cute stuff folks! I really like the swirly outfit. Very retro.
I am still working on the Pluto Poodle skirt. I needed green thread. I have all the pieces cut out, the skirt hemmed and the waistband ready for elastic. I just have to glue like a million rhinestones on a piece of red ribbon for the leash part of the decorations. I cant put it together till I get all that stuff on. *sigh. I picked up a pattern for a shorter, dressier skirt and just used the bigger size for the length and added a bit of a wedge on the side for more fullness (TY kind customer at Wally world for the hint...LOL) It is just the perfect length and fullness to just be comfy and still look good. (I HOPE) Since my 50+ yr old machine does not do zig zag I will be edging the applique with some fabric paint. I think it will actually look better that way since the shirt is a preprinted, rubbery kind of stuff, design.
Well bedtime soonish and hopefully get up before the brat does so I can get some sewing done in the morning. LOL "what'cha doin' mama?" Not a moment to myself. Does anyone remember what it was like to go to the bathroom alone?

I can't wait to see the pluto skirt. What a great idea!

Anyone still awake out there?

This is a sewing question, but not for clothes. I am looking for a cheat sheet with bedding measurments on it. Like the size of a toodler bed, crib, single, double etc. I can't find one. Maybe I am to tired to start this project :)

Thanks!!!

Look what you all have done to me! I think I can actually sew, my home ec. teacher would have been so proud!! My project of the day is a hidden mickey Twirly skirt. I'm jumpin the gun here a bit, DD just can't seem to get the twirl down. Worked with her for half an hour, trying to get her to twirl the skirt, no luck. She just hops all around:yay: Oh, well we have 70 days for her to get down pat!;)

i LOVE this! great job! ive done patchwork twirl skirts, but havent tried the "strip" twirl skirt. what pattern did you use? or better yet, just tell me what you did. thanks!

I'm up! I'm going to buy a machine this morning! I guess you can say I am officially hooked! I have some cool ideas in my head! You guys are my inspiration!!!:cool1:

Ok, here is one of the outfits that I made for our cruise. It is not disney but I thought it went well with the theme. I still need to hem the bottom. My question is do you think I should put some embellisments on it? Like a ribbon, etc.? I am still a beginner sewer so have not moved on to more advanced things yet but I hope to work towards that.

I think this is great for a beginner and I wouldn't have known that you are. Perfect just the way it is if you ask me...I can picture cruising with it now. ;)

I don't know of a cheat sheet, but a toddler bed sheet takes 2 yards of fabric, then you cut the corners out of it, sew together and finish the edges. Very simple. I made several crib sheets for DS.

I need some of that mickey swirl fabric too. I have no idea for what, but I just love it! Too bad JoAnne's is 45 minutes away (on a good day).

Here's your measurements:

King Size 76" x 80"
California King Size 72" x 84"
Queen Size 60" x 80"
Double Size 54" x 75"
Twin Size 39" x 75"
Crib Size 27" x 50"

Depth of every mattress varies, so that is something you should always measure in person. Overhang on both bottom/top and sides is normally 12"-18" though. I never had to do anything with a toddler bed, but I am assuming in most cases it is the same as the crib mattress or in some it is a regular twin size. Hope this helps you out.

I am back from a 2 week trip to the beach (came home last night). Now let me ask you---what have I been doing all morning? Unpacking or laundry like a good mom and wife? NOOOOOOO I have been catching up on this board and my eyes are killing me. YOu have all been so busy and I love all the new additions to the board.

WOW!!!! TOO CUTE!!!! This is the fabric I was talking about earlier. Do you all think it'll be ok for Christmas? Maybe as a twirl skirt or one of the "dress" things over jeans? Speaking of jeans...love these...might have to make me a pair to match DD's outfit! ;) Or is that too "young" for a Mom? :rotfl:
I'm nearly 40 years old and I am thinking about making something similar for myself if I can find the fabric! :lmao:

Yeah! I made a pair of shorts between all my emails! Now I couldn't find a pattern in the house, cut the fabric wrong the first time, so wasted a bit! Just need to add some elastic for the waist. It is not perfect, it has been so long since I did any! DS likes them, they are too short from the crotch to the waist, not sure what I did, they'll do but could be better. I might end up making him a new pair. Not sure yet! I wasn't thinking though and didn't make a pattern, so I'll have to wing it again with the next pair. You would think i would learn!

I can't believe you made shorts without a pattern. I've been trying for days! I'm so jealous!

Nothing wrong with that. I always dress for Disney too...I was beginning to feel like the only one, now at least I know there is one other person out there like me! LOL! :rotfl:
Oh no, you're not the only one! Last year, I had someone applique a Tinkerbell onto a pair of jeans for me. My 15 year old son just rolls his eyes at me. I have an idea for a pirate shirt I am going to make myself and he claims if I do, he's not going to WDW with me. :confused3 :rotfl2:

ive made a few pillow case dresses. could you explain how to do the halter style? thanks! id love to try one!

Sure! This is how "I" did it: Cut out the dress. After I cut the arm holes, I cute the back so that it was about 1.5 " above the lowest part of the holes. I folded this over and made a casing just wide enough for my elastic, also making it at the same level now as the lowest part of the holes. I cut the elastic about as wide as the outside of DD's shoulder blades, knowing it would sit lower and not need to be as wide as say half way around her rib cage. I stiched the edges of the casing and elastic together really well. Then I made a 1" casing on the front and pulled through coordinating ribbon. I used grosgrain, 1.5". Hope that helped!

Also, someone asked about the fabric, I got it off ebay!

Anyone going week of October 6th? All those ideas about the Mickey swirl has gotten me wanting that outfit something fierce especially since the comment about being a must for Pop Century. 2cutekids do you mind me borrowing your idea and modifying it? October will still be hot so I am thinking shorts or a skort.
Those of you who applique - I have a questions. My sewing is limited (pillowcase dresses is all I have ever made). If I cut out the fabric, use the sticky stuff to make it iron on - what is my best choice to finish the sides if I want it to last long term? This may sound stupid but is the zig zag stitch on the machine the same as the applique stitch (in other words - how does using my Mom's cheap Brother to finish the edges compare to using an actual applique/embroidery machine)? I have a friend that for a few bucks would finish the edges with her applique machine if needed.
