Hi All! I'm new to this board and wanted to say how envious I am of all you talented ladies! I have 2 girls and love to dress them up, but unfortunatley, don't have the talent you all have, so I end buying our clothes. We'll be going the first week of September and it's our first trip. We're so excited. Does anyone have any recommedations of some good custom sellers? If so, could you email me their names? skw444@msn.com I would love to find some cute outfits for my girls!

Susan

One way to no sew an applique is to use fabric paint. Iron on the shape as usual and then go around each edge with fabric paint (they even make clear). Just make sure you are covering the raw edge and connecting it to the base fabric. I did this with Christmas sweatshirts many years ago and they survived many years of washing and drying. The trick is to keep cleaning the tip of the bottle so it doesn't clump.

Hope this helps someone.

First, I've just tried the applique stitch myself for the first time using a zig zag and it worked just fine. Here's a couple of pictures of my first attempt. Ot's not nearly as uneven as the picture shows, just the way the shirt is laying. These are also some examples for those looking for boy clothes. My DS is almost 6 and has no problem wearing these outfits.

buffy, :thumbsup2 !

I would love to know the dimensions of the bags if you don't mind. I have 4 dd's and 1 ds and I would love to make them a special bag. Thanks in advance!

I'm not good at directions but here goes...

The bags are 10 3/4 x 8 3/4; pocket 4 1/2 x 7 1/4

The backpack is 10 3/4 square. I made it for a 3.5 year old, so you may need to adjust size.

I cut an old piece of 12x12 scrapbook paper to size to make a pattern.

for each bag you will need:
1/2 yard of fabric-for bags cut four squares and 1 pocket; for backpack cut four squares (you can also get 1/3 yard for outside and 1/3 for lining if you want you lining to be different)

fusible batting (kinda like felt with fusible backing); Cut 2 the same size as bags for each bag.

Also, you will need at least 1 yard of the lanyard (measure how long you want it to be and add about 4 inches) and some sew on velcro.

Sewing Directions:

1) Iron fusible batting to 2 outside pieces and pocket piece

Pocket

2) Turn top of pocket down 5/8; top stitch on outside at 1/2

3) Turn sides in 5/8; press. Pin to center front of purse, bottom is even with purse bottom. Stitch sides of pocket to purse front close to edge.

Purse

*hint: when sewing through batting, you might need to increase stitch length* Sew at 5/8 unless otherwise mentioned.

4) Pin purse front to purse back, right sides together. Stitch sides and bottom. Trim edges.

5) Line up side seam with bottom seam until you get a corner edge. Stitch 1 inch down (looks like a triange after stitching). Do the same to the other corner. This adds fullness to the purse. I didn't trim this in order to add stability.

Lining

6) Sew velcro tab in center of both sides of lining, 1 1/4 inch from top.

7) Pin lining front to back, right sides together. Stitch sides. Sew bottom but don't sew it closed. You need a hole in the middle to turn the purse. So, sew from each side edge towards the center. Repeat step 5 above for purse only.

Add lining to purse

8) Turn purse right side out. Lining should be inside out. Put the purse inside the lining so the right sides are together; Pin top and stitch.

9) Turn the purse through the hole in the lining. Every thing showing should be right sides.

10) Stitch the hole in the lining closed

11) Put lining inside purse. Top stitch 1/4 on top of purse.

Lanyard

12) Cut lanyard to size. I fray-checked the edges but not sure if it was needed. Turn each edge under 1 inch and sew to purse at sides near top. I put mine just below the top-stitching.

For backpack, cut lanyard in half. Skip step 2 & 3. Before starting step 4, pin lanyard to backpack front, about 2 inches up, even with raw edge of side. Do this with both sides. Continue step 4. Skip step 5. At step 12 I pinned the lanyard about 2 1/2 inches in from sides, and about 1 inch from top.

Sheesh, that was long and probably confusing:confused3 Goodluck! It takes about and hour for each one.

Sorry about the huge post and messed up pictures. I couldn't get the pictures to show up and then when they did, it was all a mess!

Sure! This is how "I" did it: Cut out the dress. After I cut the arm holes, I cute the back so that it was about 1.5 " above the lowest part of the holes. I folded this over and made a casing just wide enough for my elastic, also making it at the same level now as the lowest part of the holes. I cut the elastic about as wide as the outside of DD's shoulder blades, knowing it would sit lower and not need to be as wide as say half way around her rib cage. I stiched the edges of the casing and elastic together really well. Then I made a 1" casing on the front and pulled through coordinating ribbon. I used grosgrain, 1.5". Hope that helped!

Also, someone asked about the fabric, I got it off ebay!

I think I am going to try this one next!! Thanks!

QUESTION: Has anyone used that hotstick tool that applies iron-on rhinestones? I was going to get one with my Hobby Lobby coupon. I found an ebay seller that sells the rhinestones, but I'm wondering if the tool really works.

  • NCTWINSMOM-very cute outfits! Nice job:thumbsup2
  • billwendy-I saw them on ebay originally. They are purses to hold an autograph book, they have a pocket in the front for pens and lanyard straps to hold trading pins. I made two for my girls and a backpack for my son.
  • THE1EVILQUEEN-I have instructions for bow/curly loop flip flops. If you already know how to make bows, then you can attach them to flip flops with velcro. Not sure how well this works, but I found the info somewhere else and thought it was a great idea. That way you only need one pair of flip flops. My DD won't wear them, though. Too itchy, of course:)
  • I made the purses in hopes that I won't be the one carrying it around. I was always digging for autograph books, pennies, food. Now they are in charge of their own. We'll see how this trip goes.
  • WENDY31-Good idea, sounds like it could be cute! I think lime green would be cute as long as it's a soft color like the lavendar. Put the fabrics close to each other in the store and just see how it looks.
  • DISNEYWORLDMAMA-Too cute! I loved how you used the ric rac.
  • THEREAJOY-Thanks for the comments:love:
  • 2CUTEKIDS-Super cute and cool:cool2: You might want to make a backup pair of shorts, though. It was HOT last time we went in Feb. You just never know.
  • stepmom3-If I'm correct Alpharetta is near Atlanta, we are about 2 hours southeast of Atlanta. Deep in the heart of Georgia. BTW my oldest wore hairbows through 1st Grade.
  • CastleCreations-Thanks for posting the autograph book. It's adorable!
  • Also, Love the pink/black hidden mickey skirt! The boy outfits just posted are cool:cool2: Nice job. Thanks for all the nice comments. I will try and keep up with this thread but it takes some work.

Anyone going week of October 6th? All those ideas about the Mickey swirl has gotten me wanting that outfit something fierce especially since the comment about being a must for Pop Century. 2cutekids do you mind me borrowing your idea and modifying it? October will still be hot so I am thinking shorts or a skort.
Those of you who applique - I have a questions. My sewing is limited (pillowcase dresses is all I have ever made). If I cut out the fabric, use the sticky stuff to make it iron on - what is my best choice to finish the sides if I want it to last long term? This may sound stupid but is the zig zag stitch on the machine the same as the applique stitch (in other words - how does using my Mom's cheap Brother to finish the edges compare to using an actual applique/embroidery machine)? I have a friend that for a few bucks would finish the edges with her applique machine if needed.

Copy all you want!!! I'm thrilled you like it enough to copy it. The swirl fabric is listed on e-bay. It's for two yards and it was pricey - JoAnn's would be the better way to go if possible!!

WHERE did the surfer mickey fabric come from? I so need that for my son! And would love to copy the idea of the mickey head, I usually don't do mickey heads, but with this one it makes sense! I LOVE it! My son would go nuts. All he wants is me to make him more shorts!

I love the swirl, but don't you think it is too girly? I would love to figure out something for my son with it, just don't think it is doable.

Just got back from walmart. I resisted the urge to buy any fabric, but we have most of it so no big deal there. They need some new stuff! I am so bored with their selection!

ETA: YIKES! Surfer Mickey fabric on ebay is $10 yard plus outrageous shipping! I thought that would be simpler since JoAnne's is so far away! If anyone wants to trade and has some I have lots of other fabric, mainly girly princess.

AKSUNSHINE....those directions for the halter top were perfect. I made my daughter a pillowcase dress but was really unhappy with it. It just did not look right on her. I hemmed the bottom to make it shorter, cut the back and folded it over and put in elastic and it's perfect now. A much cuter look on her. But now just need to figure out shorts for it.

Surfer Mickey fabric was at Hancocks. They had it in store and on line but it was awhile ago.

I have the hot fix studs and wand to apply them, honestly it is very time consuming. I have thousands of those hot fix studs and rhinestones, but got disgusted because it took so long to do them. Easier to do the iron on type, but that is JMO. Maybe you just need to get into a good groove with it and it is easier, never found my groove though. :rotfl:

Thanks! Just went to hancockfabrics.com and it is still there! Any coupons or discounts out there anyone knows of?

We'll be there starting Oct 7-12. We are going to Old Key West, however. We will be at MNSSHP on the 11th.

I have a cheap Brother, also. I use the zig zag stitch to set appliques. I think it works fine but don't have anything else to compare too. I've also heard some people use button hole stitch because it is closer together but I prefer my old zigzag.

I'm so glad it worked for you!!! Post a pic! I wanna see!!!!

Does anyone remember what it was like to go to the bathroom alone?

That would be over 15 years ago, hmmmm.... nope, don't remember!!!:rotfl2:

I can NOT wait to see this skirt!!!! I am so excited about it!

Thanks! I've been wanting to make something like that, and wasn't sure how. Your directions are nice and clear!

Although, my new obsession is finding that ice cream fabric! THANKS!

I love the pirate shirt!! That is pretty cool! Also, if you go to the edit section of Photobucket, click on resize, there is an option there to resize it to fit message boards.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! The girls saw those last night and were jumping up and down excited about them!

The code "WELCOME" is for free shipping. It worked the other week when I ordered the Minnie fabric.

Here are the shorts I made last night without a pattern. I didn't want to waste my disney fabric until I knew for sure it would work.

The shirt is a bit big. I cannot stand small shirts and 4/5 is too small but 6/7 he swims in. It will fit him for a long time. I'll also trim up the edges so not so much freying going on, it is a bit long.

Ordered my surfer mickey fabric. Thanks for the code!

What is "Stick it Again stuff" I tried googling Stick it Again and got some weird movie.....I'm guessing it's some kind of glue that you can reuse or something? Sounds really cool, because I wanted to make some appliques for the girls' jeans, but they of course want a different pair for every top, and well, we just don't need that many pairs of blue jeans! So I was thinking of using snaps to change them....but of course that would mean they'd need to be basically the same size/shape and that's too limiting....

If you have a link to somewhere to buy it that would be wonderful! Thanks!

I found this great fusible web when I was in a quilting store the other day. It's called "Steam a Seam 2". It's really great stuff. It's a tiny bit tacky to hold your applique in place and allows you to rearrange pieces until you iron it and make it permanent. When the store's owner suggested it to me, I wasn't sure. However, I tried it and it is WONDERFUL!!
