Ok, lightning hit our DSL modem on Saturday and they just got it replaced this morning. So since I've not been able to get online, I've been very busy sewing. Here's what I've done so far. Now, I admit they are far from perfect, but my girls love them and I'm getting lots of practice!

Pillowcase dresses/tops for MGM - Sarah(8) likes to match her sister, but Abby(6) doesn't so she chose pink binding while Sarah has red! After I made these, I found better measurements for cutting the armholes. These had to be trimmed down on each side to fit better. They will wear denim capris with Ariel appliques and jewelry. More on those later!

Emma(2) has red binding, and the one I made for dgd2 has yellow binding. They will need Ariel jewelry, since their dresses only have Sebastian & Flounder.

This is my very first twirly skirt and Emma loves it! She had to dance all over the house, not that you can tell by the pics or anything!! This is the halter that I was trying to make. I actually did a pretty good job for guessing while she was sleeping and no pattern! I don't like the point on the bottom of the halter, I pictured it backwards in my mind and lightning got my modem before I had a chance to read further directions. I will cut the point off so it will be straight across her tummy. I even put a ruffle on the halter to match the skirt... please hold the applause, I've done enough for myself already!

This is the pillowcase dress that I made for my Goddaughter and took to her party on Sunday. It has a bunny on it, but it's hard to see it and I made matching bows for her hair. Emma wanted to model it.

Emma fell at the softball park, so she has a boo-boo on her nose and upper lip... and she just got out of the tub, so she's not at her best!

Last one!! This is a pair of overalls that I've dressed up! I'm so into the green/pink & chocolate brown/pink combinations right now! I still have to stitch everything down, but I can't wait to see them on Emma!

I did finish Sarah a twirly skirt & halter last night, and might have Abby's done by tomorrow. I will post pics of them when they are done. These are not Disney but they are great practice for the "good stuff". I'm going to make skirts for them to wear to CRT, but :ssst: they don't know about that!

Now, back to reading the last 30 posts to catch up on what I've missed since Saturday!

Where do you guys find the best fabrics? I looked at Hancock's yesterday and saw very little. Some of the fabrics on here are just adorable, I want those! :lmao:

I did buy 3 patterns though yesterday so I just need fabric now. I'm so excited.

Anyone going week of October 6th? All those ideas about the Mickey swirl has gotten me wanting that outfit something fierce especially since the comment about being a must for Pop Century. 2cutekids do you mind me borrowing your idea and modifying it? October will still be hot so I am thinking shorts or a skort.
Those of you who applique - I have a questions. My sewing is limited (pillowcase dresses is all I have ever made). If I cut out the fabric, use the sticky stuff to make it iron on - what is my best choice to finish the sides if I want it to last long term? This may sound stupid but is the zig zag stitch on the machine the same as the applique stitch (in other words - how does using my Mom's cheap Brother to finish the edges compare to using an actual applique/embroidery machine)? I have a friend that for a few bucks would finish the edges with her applique machine if needed.

We will be there then! I am worried a bit about the Columbus day crowd, but we'll manage. Alabama huh? Where do you teach?

Re: your question: I use a really close zigzag...like a .3 on my Brother. I also use a Sulky brand stabilizer ironed to the back. Some use a tear-away, others a cut-away. Go very slowly on curves. Once, you are done you can always go back and fill in bare spots by hand.

Is there a link somewhere for the pillow case dress pattern? I thought I had one, but I'm not sure where it is.

I LOVE THE OVERALLS! They are way to cute!

Is there a link somewhere for the pillow case dress pattern? I thought I had one, but I'm not sure where it is.

Here are the pillowcase dress instructions I followed. I liked them because they don't have the ribbon going around the child's neck: http://rowena.typepad.com/rostitchery/2004/06/done_is_better_.html

TNmom -- great clothes. I love the twirly skirt. That's my next challenge. I just need to get to the fabric store to pick out some good prints...without kids saying "oooh, mommy, look at this!" and "can we go home yet?" (two different kids.) ;)

I just want to say I love the clothes and the ideas on this thread.

We're taking our two year old son to WDW in September, and I am really hoping I can manage to either buy or make him at least one or two custom outfits. (I have sewn in the past, but not in about five years and I'm not ever sure where my sewing machine is.) I've also thought about buying him something plain and adding appliques; I'm not sure which route to go. My mom and my husband (both of whom will be on the September trip) both think I'm crazy since DS has a very large (and very cute) coordinated Gymboree wardrobe.

So I have a couple of questions that you more experienced outfit designers may know the answers to...

DS's favorite characters right now seem to be Mickey, Nemo, and Simba. He's also very fond of the Little Einsteins. Am I right in assuming that of these characters, I'll have the easiest time finding fabric with Mickey, possibly Nemo, and the others will be close to impossible?

What would y'all suggest as the coolest (least hot, as opposed to most hip) way to dress a toddler for the parks that would not be too difficult to make?
We haven't been in September before, but free dining was too difficult to pass up! DS is fair skinned and burns easily (just like his parents), so we aren't sure what the best choices for dressing him are.

Help!

Here are the shorts I made last night without a pattern. I didn't want to waste my disney fabric until I knew for sure it would work.

102_3397.jpg

The shirt is a bit big. I cannot stand small shirts and 4/5 is too small but 6/7 he swims in. It will fit him for a long time. I'll also trim up the edges so not so much freying going on, it is a bit long.

102_3398.jpg

Ordered my surfer mickey fabric. Thanks for the code!
I used this same fabric to make my girls a twirl skirt and a pillowcase dress! Their brother is in t-ball and they looked so cute cheering him. I guess I need to go get some more material to make my DS some shorts like those.

What a cute idea for the girls at the ball games! I bet they look darling! I just loved the fabric.

I am definitely not one of clothing designers on the board, but...

I was going to suggest those jon-jon style romper thingies for a toddler boy, because they're nice and cool. But if he burns easily it might not be a good choice since they're generally sleeveless.

You could make him some cute shorts and applique/embroider a coordinating design onto a t-shirt.

Or, you could pair the shorts with a plain t-shirt, and make him a little sunhat out of the same fabric as the pants. I got a pattern for a sunhat (boys' not toddler size) in the same package as another pattern I bought... But the sunhat didn't look that hard. A hat would give him more sun coverage.

Or, if your sewing skills are a little bit better than mine, you could make him a little cotton button-up shirt (hawaiian shirt). My DS has always preferred those to t-shirts because he thinks they are cooler (both less hot and hipper). I haven't gotten the nerve to try to make one myself though.

Good luck and happy sewing.

Kim

Question for TNmom and others who've made patchwork twirl skirts.

I've found a couple of sets of free instructions online for twirl skirts (not patchwork ones though, so I'm going to wing it for the patchwork.)

I noticed that TNmom ran the patchwork right up to the waistband. Some of the other examples that I've seen join the patchwork squares to a solid-color panel that's basically just big enough for the elastic casing.

I really like how it looks when the patchwork goes all the way to the top, but does it make the waistband really thick and bulky and/or impossible to get the elastic through -- with all those patchwork seam allowances floating around inside the casing?

Thanks,
Kim

I'm not an experienced designer, but I am a compulsive fabric shopper/buyer ;)

You could make/buy shortalls made from lightweight Disney fabrics

Disney fabric shorts and matching applique t-shirts.

When we took DS in the warmer months we'd often let him wear his swim trunks w/a coordinating shirt so he could cool off in the water areas. If he has Disney trunks you could make a coordinating shirt.

Mickey and Nemo will be fairly easy to find. There are some Simba fabrics on eBay. You could applique Simba and use animal prints too.

I have never seen Little Einsteins fabric.

The skirt I made Lydia was a stripwork skirt, but I only had a small amount of trouble getting the elastic through the top. I use a bodkin, which makes it a lot easier than a safety pin.

As for eating in the outfits,

mickey bars are only eaten on a cruise, never in a park. I just cannot see trying to eat one when it is melting faster then anyone can eat it. When DS had just turned 3 I took a bib for the meals, but I had to be quick so in pictures it wasn't on. It was kind of a pain in the rear end. That was at Chef Mickey's and he was eating an ice cream cone.

This January when DS was 4 I had a sweatshirt so took it and put it on over and zipped up WAY to the top. We were just at Mama Melrose's so no real need to undo it for pictures. I am usually okay with normal eating in the outfits, if it is something messy, then I try to be extra careful.

I do let him run and play as he wants though, there is a picture WAY back of him sledding (sliding on his butt) down the snow hill at MGM. I was not handling that so well knowing that I had Boo and the Monsters logo on the back along with another monster, but all was fine. I didn't want to ruin his fun and figured I could always fix it if something happened to it.

I always bring an extra, slightly oversized shirt to put over their special Disney clothes when eating something potentially messy. A tee shirt packs small enough to put in a bag or stroller and covers everything so no chance of stains and their clothes look good as new--even after a melty mickey bar. This also works good for my twin 5 year old boys who are too old to wear a bib or anything like that. It may sound a little bit of a hassle, but a little extra effort is worth it to me. I spend a lot of time, thought, and $$ on their special Disney outfits and I don't want to ruin their only chance to wear them--I also don't want to deny them the sheer joy of a Mickey bar. I mean, how often can a kid get a Mickey bar?

I can NOT wait to see this skirt!!!! I am so excited about it!
:lmao: ..you and me both...GRRR..I had to redo Pluto because he was not the right size (he looked too small) I should have it done by tomorrow (as long as IT naps today..:lmao: )
I found this great fusible web when I was in a quilting store the other day. It's called "Steam a Seam 2". It's really great stuff. It's a tiny bit tacky to hold your applique in place and allows you to rearrange pieces until you iron it and make it permanent. When the store's owner suggested it to me, I wasn't sure. However, I tried it and it is WONDERFUL!!
I use the Steam a Seam sticky kind too. Awesome stuff, I have always had a hard time getting things to stay put when I ironed them on. That takes away the problem. But it is as you mentioned PERMANENT. The Tack it over and over will let you change appliques from shirt to shirt.

I will cut the point off so it will be straight across her tummy. I even put a ruffle on the halter to match the skirt... please hold the applause, I've done enough for myself already
Last one!! This is a pair of overalls that I've dressed up!

OUCH! on the modem.
It still came out cute. I didnt know what to call the style but I knew you could make them from handkerchiefs. Cutting it straight should work great. Maybe some more ruffle at the bottom(you can always remove it later if you decide you dont like it)

Maybe I should break my modem a few days so I can get something done!
***SNORT**** My other half suggested something similar the other day.:rotfl: "If you would get off the computer, you might finish some of the projects you need to finish." But I dont really have to get off the computer chair. My sewing table sits right next to it. :lmao: Alll I have to do is spin my chair:rotfl2:

This is just adorable, as are all of your other outfits! May I asked how you did this skirt? Is there a pattern or directions anywhere. I would love to do one for my DD too but have almost no sewing experiance. Let me say you are giving me hope...:)

We're pretty much stuck with shorts and shirts for my son. We're in the potty training phase and I don't even want to think about dealing with shortalls/jon jons when he HAS to go!

Wish there was an eaiser way to find the few boys outfits posted. 221 pages is too much to dig through!

I went and bought 10 yards of Mickey fabric (I thought it was SO cute!)

to make shirts for our entire group and DH said he HATED the fabric and refused to wear it, so now I'm stuck trying to sell it on ebay. uggh.
1281_1.JPG

He was only in mild agreement to wear the shirts I plan on making with this blue check Mickey fabric.
248f_1.JPG

Our group will be me, DH, DS(2 {almost 3}) and some friends - mom, DD(18), DD(15), DD(11)

Any suggestions for matching/coordinating outfits would be appreciated!

And, if anyone knows where I can get gender neutural Mickey fabric for a low price (remember, I need 8 - 10 yards! ouch!) I'd love to know!
