Just got in late last night from another successful and magic filled DLR trip. We went for 5 nights/4days. We decided at the last moment to add a travel day so that we would have 4 full days in the park. We originally had booked DLH for the travel night so that we could take advantage of the FP offer, but 2 days before leaving I found an awesome deal on travelzoo for Hotel Menage that I could not pass up. We figured it would be nice to use the difference in price for more spending in the parks and I am glad we did that! We were able to walk right on Little Mermaid everyday (despite the crowds and because we went at park opening). We FP'ed Star Tours in the morning and we were able to ride twice a day. A man exiting the park one days gave us some ST fastpasses one night also..that was Way Cool!:thumbsup2
So, I want to give a brief summary of the hotels we stayed at because that is one of the hot topics on this discussion board. Let's face it, your hotel does impact your vacation!
Hotel Menage: I had called a day before arrival to find out what kind of room we would get. We were assigned a pool view room, which is what I wanted so that we could watch the fireworks. At check-in we were given a city view. I asked why we were moved , the Front desk rep said we werent. Now, having worked for Hampton Inn hotels up until a month ago, I am pretty familiar with how hotels work and room controllers, etc. I asked to speak to a GM and he said they were overbooked (in other words, they gave my room to another guest that arrived earlier than we did!)I stated just that and lo and behold he gave us a pool room. So, I must add that he mentioned "well you booked through a third party site" which tells me that they will give different treatment to people who book on Hotwire, Orbitz, etc. Not cool!! Anyhow, the hotel itself is nicely decorated with a modern theme. I liked that it was a hip boutique style hotel, and the pool was just awesome. There was a tiki pool bar and the pool was opened 24 hours. The restaurant was nice, fast service and really cheap! Kids eat free with a paying adult. We had breakfast the day of check out and it was very good! the negatives about this hotel are the close proximity to the freeway.WOW!! I cannot stress this enough..you WILL hear the free way on the pool side. So, it is a trade off!! We had our door shut and the air on and it was really noisy. The room was in need of repair..especially the bathroom!! Overall it was not a bad hotel, the fireworks view was impressive! But I would not stay there again for one reason: I am looking for a family-friendly environment when on a DLR vacation. This place was obviously geared towards the young/hip scene. There were bars near the front desk and plenty of drunk people walking around the grounds. For that reason I would stay somewhere else.
On the second day we checked into Fairfield Inn on Harbor. :lovestruc Let me just say..I am SOLD!! We absolutely loved this hotel and DBF and I agreed that we found our offsite hotel for future trips!! Being a rewards member I had already arranged via email to have a gift amenity sent to my room on arrival for DD4, extra pillows and towels.Front desk allowed us to store our luggage and called me on my cell phone when the room was ready. (1:00 p.m.) Now I was not all that impressed with the front desk workers. I met 4 of the during my stay and not one was courteous or friendly. I had reserved a Disney princess themed room and when we arrived in our room my DD4 was really excited. ( I will post some room pics in a bit)There was a pink bouquet of Mickey shaped balloons, a gift bag with Disney postcards, the princess heart candy box and princess mickey ears!! Very cute.My DD4 claims that Cinderella must have personally delivered them for her!! That was a real magical moment for the three of us!!I will say that the gift amenities cost $15.00 and the gifts were all purchased in the parks. The price tags were still on them and we figure that the total came to $25 easily so..what a deal!!:thumbsup2I realized at that point that the promo package I booked included a $50 gift card for Disney parks and I had not received it at check-in. I went down to front desk and the rep was totally lost!!:confused3 After checking with many others I finally got my gift card. I think they need to be more aware of these things. I did see the rep in the next lane speaking quite rudely to an Asian woman that was trying to ask for help coordinating her airplane trip home via shuttle. There was an obvious language barrier, but the rep (a male) was rude when she asked for a late checkout! He said "No, you need to be out by noon!!!":scared1: Like I mentioned, the Front desk needs more training!!If he would have talked to me like that....:rolleyes1 yep, it would have gotten ugly!!:lmao: Other than the front desk experiences, everything else was lovely. The General manager went out of her way to assist guest and was very nice. She saw me come back for a mid day break (my face was flush b/c it was HOT!!) and she helped me get my stroller in the elevator, then offered to get me the complimentary lemonade they offered in the lobby! Very sweet woman!!:goodvibes The rooms were VERY clean! New carpet and really comfortable beds!! Housekeeping was awesome! I asked our housekeeper to leave extra coffee one day and she never forgot our whole trip! She definitely deserved the large tip we left at checkout!:lovestruc I did not use the pool, but DBF did and said it was nice. I felt that there was not enough privacy being that it was in the parking lot and there were only a few tendrils of ivy on the fence. But many people enjoyed it! The air worked great in the room (climate controlled). The refrigerator had a small freezer compartment also. The bathrooms are really small, but very clean with good water pressure. I must say that the walk was maybe 5-7 min. to the security gates.Easy as pie!! We went back to the hotel for a break everyday too and the walk was never an issue for us! I can see that Hojos would be doable as well. For those worried about the hotels on Harbor and the walking distance, rest your fears. Every hotel on that main strip near the crosswalk is an easy walk. Overall, I have to say I will have a hard time paying to stay onsite again. I loved the FFI and the price difference was amazing. Oh, no free breakfast at this hotel, but we ate at McDonald's (next door) and Millie's everyday. I will post pics from the room in a bit...but must warn the readers, I did not take pics from the park. I will also add more thoughts on the parks, reviews, complaints, and new discoveries!!:wizard:

Thank you for your review on the Hotel Menage, I always wondered about the freeway noise from that motel.

Thank you for your review of the Fairfield Inn!! I'm planning our trip in October and had been considering FFI, but we've never stayed there so I was unsure.

So far a great dual hotel review. I'll be curious at what else you have to say.

Thank you for your review on the Hotel Menage, I always wondered about the freeway noise from that motel.

I am not one to complain about outside hotel noise but...WOWZA!! I might as well been sleeping on an airplane landing strip!:lmao: The other side may have been much quiter but the pool side was crazy loud!! On the other hand, at the FFI we were on the freeway side and while you could hear the noise outside once you closed the door the noise was eliminated. FFI did a great job soundproofing the rooms. I never heard any of my neighbors during the stay!!

I think you will like it. I have recommended it to family and friends that are loooking for offsite hotels. Besides the front desk reps I really could find nothing wrong with it. Well..I did forget one thing...the pizza hut/market on third floor closed at 11 am and reopens at 5 p.m.:confused3 That seemed strange to me since so many families go back to the hotel for a midday rest. I went to buy my DD4 a pizza for lunch and found out it is not open for lunch. That seemed odd to me, but there is always a happy meal!! :)

**Bad news today** I have half of my apartment packed up in boxes for an upcoming move and it just so happens that my USB cord for my camera is in one of those boxes!! UGh!! As soon as I find it I will post the pics of FFI hotel rooms.
Anyways, back to my trip summary.
Restaurants: We usually eat at a table service place each night of the trip. DD4 does not like character meals because she is afraid of being that close to the characters. That being said, she loves to see them in the parades and parks, just doesnt want to talk to them or touch them. ( She has an anxiety disorder) So,we are pretty much open to choose where we want to eat. She wanted to do RFC on the first night, so we went there. I had made a reservation in advance, and I cannot stress this enough- DO NOT dust show up and wait to eat there. Everytime I go there is a ridiculously long line! I walk up to the elephant and give my name and within minutes I am seated. :confused3 Now, we have eaten there in the past and the food was awesome, drinks were great! But this time? Ewwww!!I did benefit from the Safari club membership though. I got to pick an appetizer from the menu (free) then I used an email they sent me at home ($10 off) plus the waitress was cool enough to give me an additional 10% off the total bill. We ordered the kid's cheese pizza, a souveneir cup for DD4, I had the lava nachos, and DBF had the pasta with italian sausage. We also ordered souveneir drinks. The total was $58!!!:thumbsup2 Bad news is...not one of us liked our meals. How can you mess up nachos? I tried DBF's pasta..yuck. It tasted like the sauce was out of a can. The drinks were not good either. So, we decided to scratch this one off of the list. The meals are pricey, which is fine if the food is quality. But it was mediocre at best. Sadly, my sister is planning our upcoming extended family gathering at DLR in October and the first place we are eating? Yep, RFC !!:lmao: I tried to talk her out of it ...but No!!!
The next night we used our Restaurant.com cert.for HOB.We loved this place last time and we enjoyed it again. We met with a friend of DBF's that night and we all enjoyed our meals. We got kid's cheese pizza again :rotfl2: ( the child lives for pizza) and it looked pretty tasty I must say. Dbf and I both had NY strip steak with sweet potato fries and snow peas and asparagus. YUMMO!! The steak was ok..not seasoned well enough IMO, but DBF said his was perfect. The sweet potato fries were awesome..not soggy at all. The asparagus was...:cloud9::yay:..yes..I LOVE asparagus when it is not overcooked. We also ordered drinks and they were so good. They make the best drinks there. With the $50 certificate the total came to $120..well worth it!! Those were the only table service places we ate at for the trip because we didnt want to waste a lot of time waiting on food and DD4 has grown impatient with it as well. She would rather eat quick service and go back to the rides.
So, we ate countless Mickey pretzels...:goodvibes Gotta love those! I tried the jalapeno filled one and..Not a fan!! I will stick to the original. I also had the corn dog of course..so good! I have to say I still love Riverbelle Terrace and Plaza Inn. We ate at Plaza Inn twice for dinner..the pot roast and fried chicken are killer there!!:thumbsup2 Those two places never let me down! I tried the chicken fusilli at Pizza Port for the first time and I loved it. Yay, now I have something to eat when I go there!! :rotfl:We also tried Tortilla Jo's Taqueria for tacos and nachos. I wasnt all that impressed and probably would not go back.
Snacks: Just a little history, my family and I used to love the sugar and snickerdoodle cookies from Marcelines. We made a pit stop there nightly. Well, last summer we found that they discontinued those. :confused:So, having seen the pics of the cupcake stand in DTD and knowing that they sold one in Marcelines last year we trekked across DTD to get our beloved cupcakes!! But surprise..Not one to be found. We asked the CM and she said they closed the Cupcake stand in DTD and no longer offer them in any stores..the only place you can find them is Plaza Inn, Blue ribbon bakery, the Bakery in DCA and Hungry Bear!:scared1: So the night we ate at Plaza Inn we scooped up the cupcake in to-go boxes. They were red velvet and really good!! Also, Plaza Inn had various other desserts such as cheesecake and chocolate cake..everything looked great. We decided that in the future we will stop there for our snack fix!:thumbsup2 Until they change it again that is!!:lmao:

I was shocked at how busy Star Tours still was a month after opening. That particular area was SOO congested. They had CM's guiding people to go one direction on each side to help things along. We went early each morning to get our FP's for the ride since they were out of FP's by 11 a.m. each day. The ride was amazing. A job well done. I like that you get a different ride each time. The queue area is better now too. The robot that talks to ya when you are getting scanned for boarding is hilarious. :rotfl:
-Indy...the ride was broken down 3 different times that I tried to ride it. Finally I was able to get on it the last day. I gotta say..I hope they never get rid of that ride. It is one of my all time faves!! My two other favorites are Peter pan ( now one of my DD4's faves too...yay!!) and Tower of Terror ( which I rode every single day and I would put it in my backyard if I could :goodvibes) We rode the Little Mermaid ride a few different times. It was a walk on in the morning hours and even later in the afternoon some days. I thought it was brilliant. Bugs Land is still the best themed area at the parks. I know it is a kiddie area, but I love the themeing!!:lovestruc
-I did learn that when it is busy it is best to get into the left lane at IASW. That lines moves much faster because the right line is used to board handicapped guests. Speaking of handicapped guests..I have to say this..I witnessed countless people abusing it. Now there are some people where you will not visibly see the handicap, and I understand that. But I saw many teens who had a big party with one teen in a wheelchair. They would use it to board rides quicker then get out and walk later..laughing and bragging about it! That was disturbing to me!!
-Thursday was lovely ...great temps..not too crowded. But Friday through Monday was not so great!!:rotfl: It got pretty warm in the parks, which hey..I live in AZ so..hot temps are not an issue for me, but when you combine that with ungodly crowds!!!:scared1: not a good combination!! I have gone during the summer for every trip and NEVER seen crowds like these. I had to wait in Single rider lines..upwards of 30 min. I rode Space Mountain with a FP and it took me an hour on 2 different nights. Dbf and I have a game plan that always works out well for us. We ride family type rides with DD4 most of the day while we collect FP's for the evening. At about 9-10 p.m. DD4 crashes in the stroller. At this time we take turns hopping on all the adult rides that we want to do.We are accustomed to walking right on rides, especially during fireworks, fantasmic, and from 11p.m. til midnight. But not on this trip!!! OH no...it was soooo crowded that the FP was basically useless!! We were only able to get on a few rides each during that time because waits for FP lines were outrageous!! We now know we will stick to August for future summer trips or even June!!:goodvibes
-The new parade was fabulous!! DD4 and I really enjoyed it..much better than the last one!!
-We had planned to avoid the Memories show playing on IASW, but we caught it while waiting in line for the ride..quite by accident. I have to say, if you can fit it into your schedule it is definitely worth seeing. It was a great laser/light show with great Disney music and funny photos. We went back and watched it again on another night. Really cute show!
-Our most memorable magic moment happened with the Fantasmic show. Me and DD4 had never seen it because she used to frighten easily. This year I showed it to her on YouTube and she wanted to watch it. I took the great advice of many Dis'sers and pre-paid for F! premium viewing!! I have to agree..it is well worth it!:goodvibes We checked in at 7:45 and there were only 4 parties ahead of me. I had front row seats available but having a child with an anxiety issue I chose the back row in case I need to stand up to calm her. When we arrived to our seats we were seated behind two...umm how do I say it??VERY large people. I am not small myself now..but they were quite tall as well. I could see nothing at all..not a slice of daylight!!:scared1:I didnt complain because I chose those seats and had just planned to stand during the show..no biggie. Well our server asked if this was our first time..we said yes. A few minutes later he came back and said he was going to move us to a better view!!:confused3 so we followed him to a central spot in front of the stage that was roped off ..We had not one person in front of us and it felt like the show was being performed for us..!!!WOW..what a view!! We tipped the CM generously because we were so grateful that he went out of his way to accomodate us and make our daughter's trip special! As for F! it is now my all time favorite show..Murphy the dragon is awesome!!:lovestruc and this brings me the the rude people I ran across during the crowded days.
Now I understand that when there are big crowds and heat, mixed in with foreign visitors who have different customs..there will be rudeness. I will not even begin to point out ALL of the issues we had with other guests at the park. I will begin by giving kudos to the CM's who despite the heat and crowds never once were rude to the guests and handled rude guests quite well!!:thumbsup2 At F! I could not believe the number of people that kept trying to sneak in under the ropes where we were sitting..after the show started. The Cm's consistently ran them off..there were 2 girls that refused to acknowledge the CM's when asked to leave..they just sat there and ignored them:scared1: Finally the security stepped in and they moved after that!! What is with people???There are 2 other incidents that I HAVE to mention..they blew me away! When riding single rider on Splash MTN. there was a young boy in front of me in line (maybe 12 yrs old) he was harrassing every CM he came across. While waiting to board he asked the CM what her favorite ride was..she was pleasant about saying it was Splash..he called her a liar and asked why she was lying??:confused3 Everybody was watching in amazement..She just ignored him and boarded us..lucky me..he was in front of me on the ride.. so what does he do? he threw a wadded up napkin at one of the animatronics and then proceded to spit in the water. At that point I tapped him on the shoulder and asked him to stop being so inconsiderate. UGh....then on BTMRR..brace yourselves for this...I was in line in front of a group of teen boys..(maybe 14 yrs old) they were screaming a rock song at the top of their lungs in line..I ignored them because I know adolescents usually want attention when they do these things. But it was irritating to everyone in line. So..we board the train and...Wait for it..wait for it....BINGO!! they were seated behind me!! :sad1::sad2: So the ride starts and the little girl and her mom seated in front of me were so excited for her first time riding it...gulp!..well..as soon as we took off the boys behind me started shouting obscenities that are so vulgar I wont even repeat them..then they shouted.."We are ruining this ride for everyone..hahaha!!" They had planned to do that the minute they got in line!! I was SOOOO angry!!:headache: The little girl was clearly distressed at what they were doing. I could not wait for the ride to stop so I could tell them what jerks they were..but they hopped off and ran off the ride..knocking people out of the way!! Grrrrrr...What makes people do things like that? I just dont get it! I saw many rides where people had throw their garbage on the ride..and it bothers me.Disneyland is OUR park..so it disturbs me when I see people not appreciate it!!
-We stopped by the Tron events one night..and it was really fun!! I am a HUGE Tron fan!!But I liked Glow fest better. I did love the Flynn's arcade and we spent several hours in there :woohoo: My DD4 wanted to dance where the DJ's were spinning music so we did for a while. What I noticed is that there was a lot of trance music played and there were groups of people in circles ..it was similar to a rave basically. I wish they would have made it more family friendly like Glowfest was. Despite that, my daughter and I danced to the music and I was in awe of the Tron-like atmosphere. I am glad they have that type of event as an option for late night fun at DCA!! Very Cool!!:dance3:
So, that wraps up evertything..It was truly a great trip overall. I refuse to let a small group of rude people ruin my trip!!:goodvibes I will be back there on October 7th for a weekend of Halloween fun!!! Our first time visitin during the holidays!! Thanks for reading!!

It took me a while to get through the rest of the mini-ish report. Sorry about the BTMRR ride.

Sounds like you had really great nights.

I'm surprised you like the drinks at HoB. Not that they are bad, but for a high volume place I watched the bartenders measuring shots there. And it was taking a long time to get drinks. Otherwise I've found a lot of good menu items there.

Thanks, we did have a great trip overall and I can't wait til we return. Perhaps we have lucked out on the drinks, but all of our drinks were pretty strong :rotfl: I had a specialty drink that was not on the menu ( waitress recommended it) I got so tipsy that I do not remember the name of it..but it had Sothern Comfort and pineapple juice. We have always had great drinks there..I have learned that with most eateries at DLR it is hit and miss. :goodvibes
