The melatonin is a natural supplement that helps you sleep. it wont work for everyone, but it's not strong like sleep medicine. Of course, the other thing could be benedryl. When I take that I am knocked out fast. I also tried the non-drowsy dramamine, made me sleep too.

Melatonin is actually one of my primary tools for dealing with jet-lag. Basically it's a natural chemical that your body produces anyway that is believed to regulate sleep cycles (i.e., the amount in your body peaks at night). So you take some and it tricks your body into wanting to sleep. It's the only way I know of to go to sleep "early" (staying up later is easy).

The nice thing about it is that it allows you to sleep (you feel that "it's late and I'm ready to drop off" feeling), but doesn't make you sleep. Just like you can force yourself to stay awake late, you can simply ignore the efficts of Melatonin and stay awake.

Here are some tricks I've learned on using it...
  • Get the GNC 1mg sublingual (under the tongue). Try 1/4 or 1/2 tablets first. It doesn't take much.
  • The effects wear off in a few hours, so if you wake up at the wrong time and have another few hours to sleep, take another small dose.
  • For me, larger doses don't work better, and sometimes leave me with a mild headache in the morning.
  • Take it about 1/2 hour before you want to sleep - that seems to be when the peak effect hits (measured in yawns).

Let me stress, it's not a magic cureall. Your body is still confused - just because you tricked it with a bit of extra melatonin doesn't mean your body won't be producing its own supply at exactly the wrong times. So all the other suggestions (drink lots of water, try to live on the new time zone, etc.) are important.

My understanding is we naturally adjust by about one hour per day, so if all you Brits out there get the first impression that Americans are all zombies, I assure you it's not because we were dug up from a hidden graveyard by a bunch of demented out of work Hollywood screenwriters. It's just jet-lag.

Kyla - no check from me yet? I sent it Monday afternoon - close to 5 but now I'm starting to get worried - we're on the same coast. :sad1:

I have the GNC 3mg tabs timed release. So I guess thats not the same thing?
Also, I have to change planes a couple of times, so setting my watch to Barcelona time when I get on the plane isn't really going to work for me, right? I have to fly up to Vancouver, sit in the airport for a few hours, then catch the flight to London. Seems like when I catch the London flight is when I do the time change and melatonin.

DH is checkin the mail today. But I haven't gotten thru all of yesterdays' mail yet. I have lots of mail coming in since I'm the trial secretary for our big dog show at the end of June. Closing is June 1, so everyone is sending their entries in now. I try to sort through and look for your guy's mail. What town in CA are you? I do have several CA mail.

Gosh - its going to be another weekend of posting to myself. Guess I'd better get my housework done.

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Naw - who'm I kidding! :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

We've learned how to post and do :laundy:
(haha - never noticed it until now, but the laundry smilie is misspelled.)

I've never gotten it in different doses. i will have to look in the store. I also would add that i then take it the first few days at bed time to help my body get adjusted. Thanks again for the tips.

Umm - Didn't someone mention that we will have to add an hour each night to our clocks? If that is true, does that mean on the way out, we are losing the hour we adjusted to? On the way back to barcelona should be easier.

I'm personally not a huge Star Wars fan - my DH and DSs are though. My daughter is a fastpitch catcher and her nickname is Maul because she has red gear and looks like Darth Maul with her helmet on. The other catcher's nickname is Vader - black gear and a sexy, husky voice. I'm on a roll here with posts - but I need to leave in a sec. I'm going to a wedding tomorrow and am in desperate need of a pedicure - so I'll check back later
Happy Friday and long weekend to all :woohoo:

Have fun - a little pampering sounds good.

Uh, oh, Laura is catching up to me.

Well, I got to go and get some lunch and work on the doggie trial.

I have a great TA who called inventory control for me . . . where EXACTLY are all those boys????????????

They are in stateroom 5022!! Which one are you in?

Where is Bethany? I grew up in MD - I've spent time at Ocean City, MD, Virginia Beach, VA and Nags Head, NC - beaches are great fun! I much prefer the Atlantic to the Pacific!!

Hi, in Bethany Beach now!! www.bethanycam.com It is so beautiful....sunny warm just perfect!! Bethany is just north of Ocean City MD....very southern Delaware. I just went to Liquor Store and this morning I went to the Grocery Store. I have been working all day today other than that. The kids went to the beach and went shopping and my DH just took them to Rehoboth Beach for some fun.....I am going to make myself a Margarita and take a nap next to my dog!!

:cool1: :cool1: :cool1:

Im sooooooo EXCITED

Great TAG!!

Sorry to read about your friend. I can only imagine how special that that place is. Someday I'll go there.

Arlington is a really cool place.....do try to get there someday.....really worth the trip!!

(Doing the Cabbage Patch dance) Just received a phone call from our TA. Thanks to info here I asked her to check into switching us from our ressie 10 room to Cat. 12. We did and saved enough to buy a good used vehicle for DDs upcoming 16 bday! TA is not a DU rep (which we have used before with great success), so probably won't be as fortunate as Julie for CAT 5 room bump. But we are still on GTY status and that's a good thing.

Thank you, thank you to all my DIS friends here. You made our weekend!

I think we should name our CAT 12 CLUB!! I just checked and we do not have a room assignment yet.....but soon I am sure!!

Thats great, I saw a lot of it on our TV this morning from LA, on the repo thread CAPTAIN CRASH is a great Star Wars fan.

Have a good bank holiday all.

I will read up to post 7,000 when I am back.

ps Not lurkin, not sleeping, not at work, not waiting for a pirate, look at notice below:-

OUT OF OFFICE

Bye

Have a wonderful holiday!!!party: party: party: party: party:
I love the Mickey in a toga idea!!

Toga to me says Greece......I really wanted this cruise to go to Greece and I was a little DISappointed when it didn't.....but I got over it pretty quickly!!

I bought "Jet-Lag" tablets from Magellan's travel catalog. I think its melatonin. They give you step by step directions on when to take it. I think it's like a pill every 3 hrs. or something. It was about $9 for 50 hrs. of flying. One pack should be good for DH & I round trip.

Toga's and Greece do go together, but the ancient Romans (Ceasar and all) wore them too. Although I think they had a different name, like 'robe'.

What I was searching for was an image of Mickey, touring Italy. Perhaps Mickey and the tower of Pisa, or Mickey and the colliseum. Of course, if anyone is good enough, we could merge two images.

Bye

I hope the villa -- and the rest -- in Majorca is everything you are hoping and needing it to be . . . have a terrific holiday!

I received a new promotional products catalog yesterday and it got me thinking about this: We already have our lanyards planned. I wonder if we could also have an online store with some products available for purchase with our soon-to-be banner artwork on them that we could receive BEFORE we leave ... like luggage tags, magnet clips, etc.

Brian

Yes please what a great idea

Romans wore togas
Greeks wore Chitons the ch is sounded sh and causes much mirth amongst my 11 year old students when they are studying the greeks!

Remember the Roman wore colorful toga/robes. The white ones were usually worn by slaves I think.

Laura, AnnaS and DisneyMagic316, I got your checks!!!!

Thank you all for the jet lag tips. I will check out the melatonin and try it out before I get on the plane. What is the purpose for all of the water? :confused3 I don't want to start to fall asleep and then need the ladies room.

S.
