Julie & Julia

I saw the movie w/ 13 year old DD today. It was great! Like others have said, there are some sexual references but nothing too strong -- There was just one line where Julia compares something she's cooking to an aroused male body part. Meryl Streep was amazing as Julia!

The theater audience clapped at the end of the movie.

DH and I saw the movie this afternoon, I loved everything except the ending. I wish they had of given us more instead of updating it in writing.

I grew up loving Julia Child and would love to see the movie but unfortunately, I believe there are scenes involving a lobster and I can't handle seeing these things. My husband said after it comes out on dvd, he'll watch and edit that part for me. I hate having to wait that long.

I saw Julie & Julia this afternoon and loved it. Meryl Streep is magnificent as Julia Child.

Wasn't she WONDERFUL though? At times I thought holy COW, Ms Streep is spot on right down to the swagger Julia Child often did during her shows. LOL

What a good movie....even DH liked it and didn't consider it a chick movie.

DD10 and I saw it this evening! We both LOVED it! Meryl Streep was incredible! I think we'll be seeing her at the Oscars!
I think the language and one reference to a male body part went right over DD's head. The audience applauded at the end. Something you don't see much anymore!

Wow, you even have the lobster phobia in your DIS signature!!! Is it seeing a live creature boiled...or do you just freak out over the sight of lobsters in general?

Have you ever seen the Woody Allen movie "Ännie Hall"? It is an excellent movie, but if you haven't...DON'T!

I bet you never watch "Ïron Chef" either.

I am just curious what you don't like about lobster scenes. I am assuming it is the boiling, and even I don't really feel comfortable watching that, either. I used to work in a restaurant where there was a lobster tank and *I*...as the wiatress, was supposed to get the lobster out and take it to the chef when someone ordered it. I just couldn't do it, and quit a few days later.

Hyporcritical, I know...cuz I LOVE to eat lobster!

I saw this yesterday with a couple of friends I really liked it and Meryl was hilarious.

I agree. I think the movie was great but thought the ending was a little flat.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought so. Seems like it just needed a *little* bit more or something but DD told me it was just me. She loved it.

I think what we all wanted was for Julia Child to show up at Julie Powell's apartment, have them cook a fabulous meal together, and end up singing together after a few bottles of wine - wasn't it? At least that's the ending I REALLY wanted!!!

I posted a thread, but it didn't get much response...I'll try here...

Why do you think the real Julia Child didn't like the blog? I was so disappointed they didn't meet in real life.

Also, what was the real Julia Child like? Was she really so fun? So accepting of herself? There's a message in her story for every woman who is not 5'4" and petiite...her husband really loved her, she loved her life, she accepted herself...I just hope that part of the story is true.

My understanding is that Julia did not like anyone trading on her name and her work. She turned down a number of offers to license her name. I guess she wouldn't have liked the movie either.

In the book, Julie's blog contained many curse words and she frequently dropped the f-bomb. I don't think a 90 year would find that endearing. It took them over 8 years to write the cookbook. I would be protective of it also.

Did anyone else get a Julie & Julia apron? The theatre was giving them away.:goodvibes

I took my 14 year old DD with me to see this and we both loved it. Such a nice feel good movie - for a change. I have Julia's cookbook and DD wants to start doing some of the simpler recipes out of it now.

This is an interesting article from Julia Child's editor about Julia's response to Julie's blog:

Julia Child Considered The Julie/Julia Project 'a Stunt'
July 20, 2009,

Publisher's Weekly spoke to Judith Jones, Senior Editor and Vice President at Alfred A. Knopf, and Julia Child's editor and confidante, who shared her recollection of Child's feelings on Julie Powell's blog:

Jones says Child did not approve of Powell’s cook-every-recipe-in-one-year project. The editor and author read Powell’s blog together (Julie and Julia was published a year after Child’s 2004 death). “Julia said, ‘I don’t think she’s a serious cook.’ ” Jones thinks there was a generational difference between Powell and Child. “Flinging around four-letter words when cooking isn’t attractive, to me or Julia. She didn’t want to endorse it. What came through on the blog was somebody who was doing it almost for the sake of a stunt. She would never really describe the end results, how delicious it was, and what she learned. Julia didn’t like what she called ‘the flimsies.’ She didn’t suffer fools, if you know what I mean.”

Julia Child used to be on Good Morning America quite often when Charlie Gibson was still on the show. She always seemed to like him as when they were interviewing Charlie was always laughing and getting off subject.
I remmeber when Julia died, Charlie was noticeably upset that morning.
To me, she seemed like she would be a hoot to just hang out with!

I just read Julia's book, My Life in France, and it was very descriptive of her life and her love of cooking and her dedication to writing her cookbook. She married late for her generation and did not have children so cooking and her book were her children. Her husband was extremely supportive of her project.

The book does not mention the blog project other than the movie was mentioned on the cover.

Julia was spot on! I was given Julie & Julia as a gift a few years ago & thought that the whole thing was a great idea...until I started reading it. The cursing didn't bother me but the author/narrator/main character was just an unlikable, spoiled brat who seemed to take no joy in the actual cooking, did nothing but whine & complain about it and rarely even mentioned ANYTHING about the finished product. Even in Julia Child's cookbooks there is joy and fun...she really LOVES to cook and that comes through. The ONLY good thing about reading Julie & Julia was that it made me go out & get myself a copy of Mastering the Art of French cooking.

I read some of the blog -- seems I couldn't find the entire thing but I couldn't get through most of it. I found it not very interesting. The bits & pieces I did read, sounded like Julie got drunk quite a bit too. Maybe it was just that one area but there was one part saying how she couldn't really tell you if the food was good or not because she was too far gone to know.

Although, I'm pretty sure when she started the blog, she had no clue it would turn into a movie, etc...

All day episodes of "Baking With Julia" today on PBS...still on.

but not on my comcast basic cable!! I live near Chicago and PBS advertised it, I got all comfy to watch Julia on Sunday - to be denied!! :sad2:

suzzanen Thanks for posting that! ITA - I even think Julie Powell's attitude comes out that way in the movie too -

however, you will ache for both Julie and Julia, there are so many life parellels that the movie was able to bring out - and yet - I wanted more Julia Child!! I know if not for Julie - we wouldnt have the movie with Julia Child - and this movie leaves you wanting more Julia!! I was grateful for the scenes of Julia, but wanted more! The suttle scenes were so poignant - for instance when Julia reads her sister's letter announcing (the sister) pregnancy - the touching moment between Paul and Julia - oh it did bring tears to my eyes - and it was such a brief moment in the movie - but was done with such emotions! There were several other great moments in Julia's life that you just wanted to know more - esp with Meryl Streep portraying Julia so spot on!!

Also, I have to admit - I make a good Beef Burgundy - at least I thought I did until I went online and made Julia's - OMG! and I'll admit I made it just like Julie - :rotfl2: I fell asleep and it burned!! well almost - but it got all dried up!! I channeled Julia and just "Fixed it" and served it! (no burnt taste - but I have to do it again - without overcooking it!!)

(also, the bookstore was out of Mastering the art Cookbook - but had another one - and it had pictures, and was really set up unique - and she went into more detail for instance on the cut of beef - instead of buying precooked chopped meat - you can buy a top roast etc and chop it down!)

(has pictures and descriptions of the process)

Julia's recipe, from her book, from the publishers - a PDF file!! Awesome!

(I did have to google how to cook the mushrooms and onions - WOW - really worth it!)

Oh and the worst part? French Butter! Honestly we went to Garden Fresh - a huge cheaper store with more international foods than any other grocery stores! But French butter has 23% fat - American 11%!!

(they also had rolled bacon- omg - what a difference!)
