John Travolta Doesn't Believe in anti-depression drugs....

OBoy, that Scientology really grabs hold of folks:sad2: Sorry--I think it is more of a cult than a religion:confused3
As an atheist, I really don't find Scientology any crazier than more "established" and accepted religions.

His son's autistic -- got to wonder what kind of treatment HE'S getting.

Probably not any. That is why the kid Jett is now a teen ager and is never seen in the public eye like his little sister is.
Both Kelly Preston And John Travolta say that Jett has some kind of reaction to household cleaners and that is why he behaves as he does. Whatever.

Antidepressents and pschiatry "never" ? No way.

But I will say we reach for drugs and treatment way to often. We frequently do not allow ourselves to attempt to bounce back from anything on our own.

I think we way overtreat with antibiotics, antidepressents, decongestents, drugs for ADD, etc. Our bodies need to try to defend themselves - physically and emotionally.

But never any antidepressents (et al)? I don't think so.

I think he was quite reasonable in that interview - even though I disagree with his stance.

I have to comment on the "we have one princess, but we'd like another boy" comment. I think there are many people who want their girls to be spoiled princesses, but don't put their boys on that same kind of pedestral. Again, I don't agree with it - but I don't see it as saying they don't love the boy they already have.

And what does his being gay or not being gay have aything to do with this thread?

what did I miss, who said something about his sexuality? It was in the original article but no poster has mentioned it.

How would you know that his son doesn't receive any type of treatment?

Both John and Kelly have denied that Jett is autistic and even if they thought he was their religion does not allow for treatment of mental (or neurological) problems. They believe the sufferer brought the illness upon themselves and can be healed through auditing. Their religion doesn't accept mainstream therapy practices therefor it isn't far fetched to think he doesn't receive any treatment beyond Scientology approved auditing if he even receives that.

Hey, I like John Travolta. And as someone who has needed anti-depressants I think they are both wonderful and over-perscribed. But none of that stops me from believing that his son, if autistic, could have been benefited by mainstream therapies.

From page two.

He won't answer the question about whether or not he's gay because he wants his privacy...but he will talk about psych drugs, school shootings, etc. :sad2:

I don't actually care if he's gay or not, but if he really wants to be a private person, I wish he'd shut the hell up and be one.

Good for him.. Then he'll never have to take any..

Obviously another uninformed actor with a big mouth..

Who made the OP the "expert" ?? IMHO, ADD is a malady made up by the drug companies and doctors in order to sell more drugs and to reap big bonuses for selling them.

To me, "ADD" is what you get from poor parenting.

I think that drugs are being overprescribed....but that is my opinion. There are plenty of people who are not scientologists that also don't believe in the drugs. I know of at least 3 in my inner circle of friends and family that probably should be on drugs or under psychiatric care but aren't because they don't "believe" in it.

My neighbor doesn't believe in drugs...period...psychiatric or otherwise. We've tried to strike up a friendship over the last couple years but it's so hard to listen to him pound on pharmaceutical companies and how wrong pharmaceutical drugs are; especially since I'm on several medications that keep me alive! Whenever he starts in on his "drugs are evil" lectures I feel myself getting more and more wary of his friendship. I totally respect that he has his own beliefs, but it seems like he blasts me with his opinion at least once a month on average. It just gets tiring to have a 30 year old guy who doesn't have an ounce of education outside of high school lecturing me like he knows more than my doctors do. But anyway, he's not a scientologist, just an average Joe who disagrees with medications.

I think that people who hold these offbeat opinions would have more friends if they would make some reasonable effort to not cram those opinions down other people's throats. Travolta doesn't seem to do that so much, but Cruise certainly does! :sad2: What a nut case!!!

I have to respect the scientologists for picking a great place for their world HQ - Clearwater. it's a great place for their cult to vacation.

the downside for us is we get on their local mailing lists and set up booths at local events looking to convert.

popcorn::

While I do agree that today every pre-teen boy that does not like doing homework or sitting still(not all that rare) can be diagnosed ADD depending on the doctor you take them to. I dont think that every single diagnosed case is false or a malady.

My son got a D in Geometry on his quarterly report card early this year, his teacher advised us to take him to the Doctor because he was not performing up to his ability. I did not take him, and he is currently bringing home an A(dont ask how I cured him).

I know people who DONT 'believe' in Asprins for a headache!!!

So What? :confused3 To each their own!

My son - who bounces, twirls, spins, and jumps pretty much whenver he's awake - was diagnosed with ADHD several years ago. Taking his medication during the school year has made 100% difference. His grades were always good, but now his behavior at school is also appropriate.

So, did my poor parenting change overnight or what? Right.

The problem isn't so much that Scientologists reject mainstream psychiatric medicine, but that they substitute it with their own practices of hard fasting and sweating and dietary supplements. People have died from undergoing Scientology "detoxifications."

As an atheist, I really don't find Scientology any crazier than more "established" and accepted religions.

The main difference is that the more "established" and "accepted" religions do not hide their theology, revealing it only as you reach higher and higher donation levels. It's as much a pyramid scheme/marketing scheme as anything else.

And up through the beginning of at least the Cruise-Kidman marriage, they were insisting it was NOT a religion -- Kidman could be a Catholic AND a scientologist, because they weren't mutually exclusive. It was just a thought process (or whatever their term was). So when was that -- mid 90s?

They started claiming religious status only when the IRS investigations and court cases started. Then they needed protected status as a religion.

I've raised 4 kids...1 is ADHD and was clearly different from day one... I wouldn't call his behavior bad, but he has a very tough time focusing when unmedicated.. I guess. I was an excellent parent with the straight AAA honor role kid, a good parent with the 2 others and a bad parent with the one with ADHD

Well, "they" do say that every child has different parents.....;)

I read this thread last night knowing nothing about his son being autistic. I hadn't seen a picture of him in years and had no idea he was as old as he is, he's a teenager now. So I researched it a little and came across some pictures of him. He really is beautiful and so is his sister. There was something about how he focused on the camera though that I found particularly haunting....couldn't stop thinking about this child and his parents.

I've always liked John Travolta but I do feel a little different now reading his child is autistic and he refuses to acknowledge it. That bothers me, I will say. I believe celebrities are entitled to their privacy, but to me refusing to acknowledge it makes it stigmatized. :( How could he do that to his son? I'm not feeling the love for him anymore if the rumors are true.

Would his head explode if someone mentioned ECT to him?
