Ugh, that's black. But believe whatever you like...Ugh, that's navy blue. But believe whatever you like...![]()
Can someone please contact DCL's paint supplier to get the exact color name, dye lot number and manufacturer so we all know that the color is a very dark blue? Hoping that will be proof enough.
Why are others so passionate that it's not black?
...and those 'stats' posted were from a Disney 'fan site', not a site official sanctioned by or produced by Disney or DCL...unlike the link which states that the color is black which comes from the official Disney Cruise Line Public Affairs website.![]()
bolding is mine...Fun topic. I guess it's the trivia nut in all of us.
Again, I quoted from an official Disney publication called "Disney Magic: the launching of a Dream". I purchased the book onboard the Disney Magic in 2008. On page 31 it states that the color is only 87% black and the rest is blue. I could scan it if you'd like.
If you post the link to your "official" site that shows it being black, we can agree that Disney has contradictory information out there and we should escalate this to the Disney Insider column "Ask Dave" to resolve.
I have yet to find anything official stating it's black except a very passionate opinion.
the DCL DVD (about 75 or 80 min long) that I own talks about the build/design of the ships. Mine NEVER mentions this 'dress story' at all. It does talk about how the ship's designers went to the maritime and asked for some flexibility w/ the color of the lifeboats being a golden yellow in place of orange, and it was approved. They make no mention of having to fight for it, just prove that it was as visible as the orange under the same circumstances.Next time you're sailing on one of the ships and it's docked, look for the nicks and scrapes and you'll see that it's very dark blue. And I believe the story about the cast member's pants being the perfect shade of blue is told on one of the cruiseline videos/DVDs/travel channel specials by someone involved with the color selection process because I've seen it more than once.
Best ... thread ... ever.
Dursin is my hero. There is no such thing as a midnight blue mouse.
bolding is mine...
I have the DCL cruise line DVD and they state it is black. and 87% black is a MUCH higher % than 13% blue. Is it an absolute true black, apparently not...but by percentages it is 'much more' black than blue.![]()
That was my first thought also!Is that a Bill Clinton story?

What color would you say if I asked you?My thought is that it's easier for them to say it's Mickey's colors...red, white, yellow, black.....than it would be to say red, white, yellow, and a color that comes out looking black, but really isn't.
We've been on the Bridge with a few of the different Captains, and my son has asked this question before, because he read our copy of "The Making of the Magic" and was still curious.
It's a MIXTURE of paint colors that give the ship a black appearance.
Now...if the average run-of-the-mill person asked me if it was black, I'd say "yes" simply because that's easier....but if they wanted to know the absolute truth, I'd say "No, it only looks like it is".
What color would you say if I asked you?![]()
He did post the link earlier in the thread. Not sure where but it is an official Disney site. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.
Or maybe they were originally completely black and have since been changed and no one bothered to tell their PR division. Who knows?
Quoted from the book (purchased on the Magic) "Disney Magic The Launching of a Dream":
Page 31 (referring to Dr. Hartmut Esslinger, the designer)
Among Esslinger's other contributions was color. "I recognized the traditional colors of classic ship hulls were black. I think that, for the future, black is too sinister, too depressing, especially on a Disney ship. I selected a color that was 87 per cent black, the rest blue" (direct quote from Esslinger.
And then, on page 55, when talking about the day the Magic had its sail out, it talks about then-DCL President Art Rodney making his speech about "the dream of a lifetime" and how he and his wife looked up at the Magic's great "blue black hull"........
There you go...it's official.
