Next time you're sailing on one of the ships and it's docked, look for the nicks and scrapes and you'll see that it's very dark blue. And I believe the story about the cast member's pants being the perfect shade of blue is told on one of the cruiseline videos/DVDs/travel channel specials by someone involved with the color selection process because I've seen it more than once.

It is dark blue...always has been....always will be. We have heard the story a few times onboard and I have read about the hull being blue in several place.

Even though it may be listed on the press page as black...it is incorrect. We all know DCL has many errors on the website with information.

Why are others so passionate that it's not black?

...and those 'stats' posted were from a Disney 'fan site', not a site official sanctioned by or produced by Disney or DCL...unlike the link which states that the color is black which comes from the official Disney Cruise Line Public Affairs website.

My thought is that it's easier for them to say it's Mickey's colors...red, white, yellow, black.....than it would be to say red, white, yellow, and a color that comes out looking black, but really isn't.


We've been on the Bridge with a few of the different Captains, and my son has asked this question before, because he read our copy of "The Making of the Magic" and was still curious.

It's a MIXTURE of paint colors that give the ship a black appearance.


Now...if the average run-of-the-mill person asked me if it was black, I'd say "yes" simply because that's easier....but if they wanted to know the absolute truth, I'd say "No, it only looks like it is".

And then, on page 55, when talking about the day the Magic had its sail out, it talks about then-DCL President Art Rodney making his speech about "the dream of a lifetime" and how he and his wife looked up at the Magic's great "blue black hull"........

Again, I quoted from an official Disney publication called "Disney Magic: the launching of a Dream". I purchased the book onboard the Disney Magic in 2008. On page 31 it states that the color is only 87% black and the rest is blue. I could scan it if you'd like.

If you post the link to your "official" site that shows it being black, we can agree that Disney has contradictory information out there and we should escalate this to the Disney Insider column "Ask Dave" to resolve.

I have yet to find anything official stating it's black except a very passionate opinion.

the DCL DVD (about 75 or 80 min long) that I own talks about the build/design of the ships. Mine NEVER mentions this 'dress story' at all. It does talk about how the ship's designers went to the maritime and asked for some flexibility w/ the color of the lifeboats being a golden yellow in place of orange, and it was approved. They make no mention of having to fight for it, just prove that it was as visible as the orange under the same circumstances.

Agreed, it is more black than blue....but the designer made a point of saying that it WASN'T just black.

It goes on, in the book, to say that the color will change, depending on the time of day, weather and position, and that the variation of color is "astonishingly subtle".


So technically speaking....and this is the answer the OP was asking about.....NO, it is NOT BLACK.

Or maybe they were originally completely black and have since been changed and no one bothered to tell their PR division. Who knows?

I know, but a press release??? I know press releases are always quite factual. I agree with a PP that said that it's easier to say Mickey colors in a press release - black, yellow and white.

Before this thread, I would have said Black too which is why I looked it up in the book I purchased on the Magic.
