Is it true the ship is blue and not black?

dursin, that was the one I was looking at when I typed it up. I really did not feel the need to go back and grab another link.

We purchased the Disney Magic book onboard a few years ago.

I just looked it up in the chapter on the Making of a Classic. On page 31 it states that the designer thought black was too sinister, so he created a color that was 87% black and 13% blue so that the color changes slightly depending on lighting. He wanted to update the classic to make it a "modern classic".

This was published by Disney so I assume that if you "Ask Dave" he'd give you the same answer.
I used an 'eyedropper' tool on a dozen different pictures of the Magic and Wonder. The color comes up black in all instances. If there is any trend towards blue, it's minimal....ie, the last sample I took was #222629 where the first two digits are the amount of red in the color, the second two the amount of green and the last two the amount of blue. Perfect black would be #000000. Anyway, the facts support that the hull is black. I really don't care if someone wants to call it purple if that's what makes them happy.

When I cruised last, I took the tour on the ship and they talked all about this. They talked about how the colors of the ship came to be. They wanted to use the three Mickey Colors. Black, Yellow and Red. But they had a few problems with that. All lifeboats have to be orange, so Disney had to fill out lots of forms and fight to prove that yellow was just as noticeable as orange in the water…….they won and now even other cruise lines have yellow lifeboats. It cost Disney a bit of money to get this law changed, but to them it was worth it. As far as the black, no way would they let a black ship sail on the open waters. Then one day a Disney cast member walked into a meeting and had on a very dark blue dress. They right away asked the woman for the dress and they took it to the painters and had that color made. It’s NOT black; it’s a blue, so it was approved. The color of the ship is Monica Blue, named after the woman who was wearing the dress that day.

So the person who said it's BLUE, is correct!

Thus is true the bottom of the ship is dark dark Navy blue, I believe because you can't paint the bottom of the ship black for some reasons maybe with rules on the open water with safety issues...

No flaming each other....
But I did find THIS on a DISNEY web site....

Wow! I would have never thought that people would get so fired-up about this! Great research on the black with midnight blue paint mix! Now, does everyone believe that is true or is more proof needed? :cutie:

The only proof provided so far is the link to an OFFICIAL Disney Cruise Line site which states that the color is black. Everything else is just stuff people have heard somewhere or found posted on a 3rd party site. So...no more proof needed here. It's black.

I have a sneaking suspicion that more proof will be needed. :lmao:

:rotfl:

:rolleyes1

BTW, I just asked my son who is VERY artistic and doesn't miss a beat where details are concerned. Without knowing about this conversation, his answer: "it's either dark blue or black" (I don't know why but that just cracked me up!)

It always looked dark blue to me.

:upsidedow

Just curious why you are so passionate about this subject? Someone posted information from a DISNEY book that states it is not completely black. Another person posted stats from a DISNEY site that states it is not completely black. Do we need to get one of the original painting crew to come on here before you accept that it might not be entirely black? :confused3

Is black the color of the disney boat? No it's not. Black is not a color.

Black is the absense of color. I'm not the only one that took physics, you might remember this too.

To make a pigment appear black you take away all the light colored pigment. You are usually left with a very dark green or blue.

If i was going to bet money the paint is a dark blue in this case.

We could always ask the DISer who just painted her dining room to look like the ship, what color she used?

:lmao: (just kiddin)

Why are others so passionate that it's not black?

...and those 'stats' posted were from a Disney 'fan site', not a site official sanctioned by or produced by Disney or DCL...unlike the link which states that the color is black which comes from the official Disney Cruise Line Public Affairs website. :)

Fun topic. I guess it's the trivia nut in all of us.

Again, I quoted from an official Disney publication called "Disney Magic: the launching of a Dream". I purchased the book onboard the Disney Magic in 2008. On page 31 it states that the color is only 87% black and the rest is blue. I could scan it if you'd like.

If you post the link to your "official" site that shows it being black, we can agree that Disney has contradictory information out there and we should escalate this to the Disney Insider column "Ask Dave" to resolve.

I have yet to find anything official stating it's black except a very passionate opinion.

He did post the link earlier in the thread. Not sure where but it is an official Disney site. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

Or maybe they were originally completely black and have since been changed and no one bothered to tell their PR division. Who knows?
